"Liar"... Bristol meyers, squibb(Stamford Connecticut) owned clairol procter, and gamble bought them out and if you did research first, you'd know that it was an Ad agency firm (Foote,Cone, andBelding)with union artists and graphic designers (A Whole Team),and not your cousin.FYI,Peter Max was the Art design consultant.
SOFTSOAP makes a body wash that you can buy at most 99 cent stores that is called Fresh Aloe Fragrance, and it smells EXACTLY like the original Herbal Essence Shampoo! I bought dozens.
It's a 7.5 fl oz bottle, and the UPC is 07418228071. My eyes roll back into my head every time I use it!
So many people including myself, find that the new ones smell bad, and so strong they give you a headache. The company is very stupid for not listening to so many of their customers who want the original back. Walmart will be selling a Mexican brand named Caprice that has an herbal shampoo that is supposed to smell the same. Ironically, it's made by Palmolive.
@MegaCrowman - Me too, I wanted to marry the girl in the commercial. And original H.E. isn't just for women. Long, clean hair is something a lot of women like on guys -- and if you washed with this stuff, it was a chick magnet!
The Vermont Country Store is now selling this! They had to change the name but I bought a bottle and it's the exact scent and color. They also have "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific."
Man, I wish they would bring this stuff back, if only in limited production per year! I too am down to my last bottle and I refuse to use it, something about that luxurious seventies forest scent! Clairol, bring it back!
I loved that shampoo when i was a little girl. I also like the''Gee your hair smells terrific'' shampoo and conditioner but they no longer make those products. I did discover a shampoo at Walmart, its green and the brand name is Vanart. That shampoo smells like the original herbal essence shampoo. I hate the new flower scented shampoos by clairol, they dry my scalp and the scents nauseate me.
Ooohh! I will definitely check that out, thanks for the tip! I agree, the floral scents in the new H.E. is utterly dreadful! They all smell like nauseating candied flowers, I just want a pine forest wafting from my hair, is that too much to ask for?
I don't like the new stuff either. Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. Also, you can still buy "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific" and "Lemon Up" on line at the Vermont Country General Store. They have an awesome website.
About five years ago, I found the original Clairol Herbal Essence in a little grocery story in Byron, IL. I bought them out! I share your sentiments and have written to Clairol. Their response was not what I'd hoped for.
Oh me too! I found a random tiny little family owned pharmacy around 3-4 years ago that had a shelf full of original H.E., and I bought them lock, stock and barrel! The cashier looked at me like I was crazy! That's the stash that I have the one left from. I've looked at the Vermont Country store as well online
mspcustom100, and they even had Body on Tap from the 70's (before my time, but I remember my Aunt still using bottles of it as a child), but no H.E. So sad!
Boy did I fantasize when I was a little girl that one day I would wash my hair in waterfall in a pond full of flowers, man I used to love this commercial!!! I would love to see the one featuring the brunette, does anyone remember that one....it was much greener and there were white flowers floating in the water all around her as she lathered her hair...wouldn't that be cool if they could bring back this advertising campaign!
Seems like there was a Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo commercial like this but a woman was singing, like in the late 1960s,maybe.I LOVED it and wish I could see it again.
@teverhat - "Come into the garden of earthly delights, with delicate blossoms and fragrant green herbs." I think I may have that on an aircheck somewhere. It should have been included on "Psychedelic Promos and Radio Spots" !
LOVED this commercial as a child. I dearly wanted to swim and play in that flowery pool.
The last time I saw this original bottle with that beautiful girl on it was around the mid '90s. Once I finished the bottle I cut the picture off and put it in my scrapbook.
FYI, you can still find this original Herbal Essance from the 70's, on Ebay. I know, because I won a bottle. Nothing can compare to the original. Also love the body splash they put out in '75. Smells just like the shampoo!! Good luck!
my cousin was the artist who did the animation on this commercial,my mentor, sadly, she passed away just a few years ago but after this commercial went on to become a huge force in advertising in nyc for many many years. Sandy, you'll be in my heart forever
What a talented artist she was! I've been a fan for a long time and have collected many of the ads for that artwork. There's an originality to it that is just magical!
Thx for the kind words...her name was/is Sandy Carlson...google her name...the herbal essence commercial was her very early carreer...she soon went on to become the inspiration and creative force for the Ralph Lauren clothing line, reshaping the entire image into what it is today. Sandy's husband would often say..."Ralph was the other man in her life".this herbal essence commercial was one of her very early projects when she was just starting out as a young commercial artist in nyc.
i would give anything to have that green original back. i should have stocked up while it was still in the original container with the original scent, sitting there on the bottom shelves getting all dusty, in the 80s. but you know there are other hair products still on the bottom shelf, that no one buys, so i figured it would just be around forever with the white rain, vo5 and aqua net.
@rainydaywoman1957 But today's "bottom shelf" shampoos like White Rain, Aqua Net, Vo5 SUCK. I, too would give anything if the ORIGINAL Herbal Essence green returned with original scent. That & "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific," and "Body on Tap." Oh- and "Babe" deodorant! I remember around 1975 - in school there was no doubt the girls who shampooed with "Gee!"
i recall another announcer with a lilting voice and in the end he says..a garden of earthly delights. this is not the exact one i remember from the early 70s.
I called Clairol and asked for the ORIGINAL Herbal Essence shampoo. They said they had no plans to bring back the ORIGINAL. Frankly, I'm sick of all their sickening "Herbal Essences." Seems like Clairol forgot a generation of devout Herbal Essence shampoo users. It's obvious Clairol doesn't care about their customers' wishes. I asked them to manufacture a limited supply, but no. Clairol forgot the generation that made them who they are! I'm sick of the Clairol "Herbal Essences" sweetness.
-this was the original clairol herbal essence shampoo, green only. if you want a shampoo that is identical in smell and color, get a mexican brand called "Caprice" in their green herbal variety. it's in an oval bottle with a flip-top.
I'd buy it again. Along with Earth Born? (I think it was the name) Apricot shampoo that smelled wonderful! They had Green Apple and Avocado too. Cira 1975-77?
This was a 1980s or 1990s version. The original dates from about 1969 or 1970s, and was completely animated. The cartoon woman was shown bathing in the river, while little animals frolicked around her, and a bottle of the shampoo floated on a lilypad. There was no narration; just the jingle for the product.
i love this commercial! i've been looking for it forever. very groovy. i always wanted to be the girl in the pond. the shampoo was awesome. smelled very woodsy and yummy. today it stinks. they always ruin things by trying to make it better : (
Thanks for this! I didn't know there was a different 1977 version. The original 1970 version was just posted by another user.
Although original Herbal Essence is no longer manufactured, the Mexican shampoo company Vanart makes a knockoff called "Herbal Essence" that smells just like the original. It's sold in most drugstores in the southern U.S. (usually on the bottom shelf, since it's a discount brand). If your local drugstore doesn't carry it, you might try Mexican markets in your area.
I almost bought a shampoo that smelled like that at Stop & Shop yesterday. Forgot the name, though. Yet I didn't feel right buying it, because it may smell like Herbal Essence, but isn't. That's why I'm hoping the Vermont Country Store gets their butts in gear and finds the stuff!
Did you contact Vermont Country Store about it, Sara? What did they say? I contacted them about six years ago, but they just told me Clairol no longer makes it. You could still special order it through Clairol up until about four years ago, but someone bought out all their stock and sells it on ebay for $60 or $70 bucks a bottle.
I have cattle prodded VCS about the shampoo to no avail. There is, however a petition you can sign to get Clairol to produce an anniversary limited edition. I'll send the link.

I adore this shampoo and want it back.
I'd LOVE a dusting powder too.
I'll take this any day of the week over having my hair smelling of strawberry milkshakes, green apples or other gagifying fruity, stinky stuff.

who started this war on personal products where everything has to stink? i think it started around 1990.
in 1987 there was a jasmine clairol herbal essence that was amber colored. they expanded in the mid 1980s and had more than just the green one.
it's not even fun to use shampoo anymore because every friggin one of them stinks.
