my 2002 f350 7.3 power stroke, starts and runs for 30 seconds then shuts down. after many attempts it will start during cold weather. whats my problem?
@William7263 sounds to me like you need some new glow plugs and a relay now if the relay is like $80 bucks then get a starter relay there normally cheaper and they do the same thing
hey guys i know of a past friend that had a diesel with a patented quick start feature the engine had only one glow plug in it was a straight six detroit cummings
ands if ya waited longer than a quick count to 5 ya blew up the motor cranking it
i know because ive fired it up numerous times myself and drove the vehicle. can reach me at gbennett@stny.rr.com
how much was the glow plug relay, and the glow plugs ? i have the same problem .. the other day i plugged my truck in , and now it wont start .....idk if its a bad starter?? or bad batteries?..its real rough trying to start it
My 95 f 350 had the same smoke bad gps and relay were teh culprit woudl nto start in codl so repalced the relay and glow plugs now it will start nwo smoke and no plu gin needed! until it gets below 20~!
It only takes ten minutes to change the glow plug relay. My 96 has been changed many times by me. they run around $80 at International dealers. My truck has 287,000 miles. Check out my video walk around, just search altonmcc.
im pretty sure the smoke comin out is oil...my dodge durango is smokin like mad..they said i needed a new coil for my 8th cylinder...and that oil was burining outa my exhaust
It's the glow plug solenoid (relay), located on top of the engine. Buy 2 and keep one in the glovebox for a spare. They can stop working with no warning signs.
Then tell us all how diesels start without glow plugs genious, news flash bonehead: they need the glow plug to assist in the fuel combustion in the chamber, I didn't go to tech school for nothing, hello??
@speedjunkie66 not all diesels need glow plugs he's right....direct injected engines start much better in the cold and aren't always equipped with glow plugs or in some cases a grid heater. The cummins engine put in the Dodge pickups have grid heaters but i've seen some of the newer dodges not have anything. If it's direct injected heating the air in the chamber isn't necessarily needed.

@speedjunkie66 Ok, BONEHEAD... All a glowplug does is heat the air inside the cylinder to help ease the starting of a diesel in cold weather. If you have a good battery you can just crank on the starter for 10 to 12 seconds at a time and use the compression the motor creates to heat the air. The new 6.7 liter Cummins in the Dodges have no glow plugs and they start up just fine. So, Bonehead, maybe you need to go back to "TECH SCHOOL" and maybe pay attention this time.
hahaha my relay is burnt in my 97 and it sucks if i stay anywhere over night and it gets relativly cold i have to plug it in in BS, i guess its time to fix it lol
It's the relay. My dad's had the same problem. The 1994(late)-1996, had a different type of glow plug relay. It's skinny and black, and it's a piece of shit. My truck only had 68,000. The new relay is upgraded and MUCH better. Fix this truck
My dad just did this on my 95, it had a bolt broke in it an had been arcing across to fir the plugs. well he changed it, an now my blinkers are REALLY slow, lights seem a bit dimmer than normal an volt gauge is barely reading at the "N" for normal. Any idea's? All worked fine till he replaced the relay, could he have hooked it up wrong?
Sounds like your alternator is bad. I had the same problem and I took it in and they said it was the alternator. I also lost my starter and batteries right after I changed it also.
Thats so F-ed up. damn thing is costing money like crazy, it has bad frontend bushings in that have to get replaced an a bad injector. But it was a $2,500 truck with 290,000 Kilometers on it
change the glow plug relay it take 3 min to change 4 wires on top cost around 60 to 70 $ its the one behind the fuel filter close to the fire wall on. charge the batt to full and it will run like new!
i got the same problem man... damn glow plug relays are shit, it might even be the wires going to it... check out what your truck could look like with 44's! check out my user name
When the glow plug light goes off wait until you here a click then start. what I can see from this video is that ur relay is on its way out. but wait for the clik after the light goes out. it could take upto between 5- 15 seconds.
Before you burn out the starter, next time it won't start, take a screwdriver and jump the terminals on the relay. Then try and start. If it starts fine, your relay is bad... theres another better glow plug relay, from napa. Its a stancor 586-902. Ford likes almost $100 for theirs, whereas the stancor is only $50.

this is why I have a gasoline engine in mine......
thecayman1974 1 year ago
@thecayman1974 Your gasoline engine won't last 500k though... If you have a diesel and you take care of it, it will be good to you.
caleb505 1 year ago
if this happens again it may be a cam sensor failure.Your tach is supposed to bounce while cranking.

Yeah, its a loose wire cuz if the relay was bad Ýour truck won't start at all til you get a new glow plug
speedjunkie66 2 years ago
@speedjunkie66 not true. you don't need glow plugs for it to start.
northeasteg6 1 year ago
Just plug it in all the time. Then when you go to use it start it then unplug it. I mean once its running it will prob stay running
