@djblackarrow SOME psu's have max draws. other higher end psu's have what they call "true power" which tells you the psu's max possible TRUE output. cheap psu's say they have 450 watt. however it goes similar to this.
12v main line to board. 14 A
12V molex 5 A
12 V atx 8 A
for a total of 27 A.
amp to watt equation i do not remember right now. but normally a 450 watt psu, thats not rated TRUE power actually outputs like 380. had a 500 that outputted 438 true
@JasonMann8 psu's will shut themselves down from over-draw. my current setup, im underpowering my amplifier. im using a 500 W psu on a 600 W amp. its taken some fine tuning, but i dont draw more than the psu can put out now. (amp draws 25 amps, psu puts out 20)
Yellow from 12 volt 20 A rail to amplifier, bridged over to remote (or 12 v floppy wire,or molex) also yellow, and a gnd cable. yellow from molex to car stereo aswell as gnd. rca out of stereo (aka head unit) to amp. from amp out to spkrs. in this setup you will want to run ANY SPEAKERS off the amplifier, as the 12 v line going to stereo isnt powerful enough to allow uses for speakers. GREEN TO BLACK is power on. you could throw a 12 V switch in between the two wires, and uve got a on off switch
for clarification, amps are what matters with a psu to amp connection. a 300w psu sounds good with a 300w amp, but the psu may only be 15a and the amp could be 25a, thus overheating the psu. and look at rms power with amps when comparing watts. the peak power can only be reached under ideal weather conditions, volume maxed, and a clean power supply under a quick spike of electricity
What do the grey rectangles represent? Aren't you underpowering your sub alot, and putting alot of strain on the psu since its trying to run a HU and a SUB. Also, Wouldnt it be better to use the spare channel and the current one for the sub, To provide it with more power?
@jarrodw04 rectangles are the pin connectors. Just get a high watt PSU but it worked on mine for months until I dissasembled it. Sub on spare channel wouldn't make much of a difference, pretty much same thing.
What is printed on the case on a power amplifier, is not the continuous power! These are only theoretical maximums, which may never be reached. It's just a beautification and users are encouraging.
The continuous power is to be read in the manual.
For home cinema amplifiers, only the power consumption is specified on the nameplate. Not the power output. The power output is also just read in the manual to. But there are rare exceptions.
@xtigoxxx psu = "600w" rms/ 900w peak and the amp = 600w rms/"900w" peak this would not underpower the amp , to boot psu's are usually under-rated, while amps are over.
You can however remove the head unit from the equasion and use rca from most any device or stereo. i have a diy sub setup like this, tho all in one box.
@thehacksrule First of all IS your setup exactly connected as the diagram shows? I would advise you to check once more and also to make sure your HU is not put on aux. Does you power supply turn on?
The instructions is best one so far, but iam confused where the 1 is pointing at the yellow wire. its splits to a red wire as well, where is the red wire coming from and where should i hook it up to?
@Supermociomo The answer is simple. The Red and Yellow wire is coming from the headunit which are joined together . Basically all you have to do is hook up the Yellow from the PSU to the Red/Yellow from the headunit as shown exactly in the diagram.
@Supermociomo: each Black Wire: Ground ; Yellow: +12VDC ; Red: +5VDC ; Blue: -12VDC ; White: -5VDC ; Orange: +3,3V ; Violett: +5V StandBy ; Green: power on. You need only Black, Yellow, Green. As shown in the video.
hi, i followed this instructions and everything is nice. But when i turn the radio to aux mode in order to use the speakers through, the sound cames very low and with static.
wow did every body learn about amps and subs in school or sumthing, how do yall know so much about this shit, are yall just born with this knowledge or learn it cuz i know idiots who have this shit hooked up and this shit looks way to complicated for them to understand

hey man yall want a ponding system in ur house u dont want to use comp. power supply's that is retarted i tryed .... you want one 250watt one for the deck and a R.V power supply for the amps lots more power
From the PSU to the head unit, do you simply leave the black and red leads alone? I simply want to connect my head unit to a set of powered speakers, so I'm assuming, based on this diagram, that all I need is to connect the battery lead, to the yellow on the psu, and the grounds. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm running a 1300w amp off a 580w PSU... lol, it seems to be working fine.
HOWEVER...
I'm trying to figure out the best way to wire in my drycell so that it's drawn off of instead of straight from the PSU, leaving the PSU to charge the battery.
Much better option, honestly, if you're going to run a set up like that with a low-watt PSU like what i've got.
@jermjerm12345 U can use a car battery but you will have to charge it alot. you won't cause a fire unless you short some wires or you overcharge the battery. also if its in your house you should put the battery in a container so that if it leaks it doesnt ruin your floor
@jermjerm12345 Car battery installation would be the same connection as u would do in a car obviously, now i dont know about it causing a fire, but if u aint sure what ur suppose to do then dont mess with it! As far as i know this (PSU) connection works just fine
@big70pun No, as u can c from the diagram, only the yellow wire goes direct from PSU to 12volt. Next u will need a small piece of wire and hook it to REM and 12volt
thanks... 500 watt PSU to an 800 watt car amp... works but don't crank the volume or run the thing too long or something may caught fire or burn... thumbs up...
@2MCHNV no u dont hav to splice anything if u follow diagram. u shud hav a few yellow wires cuming out of power supply and each one is hookd seperately to headunit and amp.
uh, sorry, bit of a noob question, but my car radio has a (red and white) stereo cable in it already. can i hook it up to my existing stereo and it would work (that is with all the power set up for the car radio)
@Trainguyxx All u hav to do is hook up the 12volt and power cable from stereo to the 12 volt cable on ur power supply. And ofcourse the ground cable from stereo to power supply. See diagram.
if you tie all your yellows together and all the blacks together you can run your system harder cuz your pushing more amps each yellow wire carrys 1-2 amps so if you have like 7 yellows you have 7-14 amps
@zazooon No, no you cant. Its the same if you use all or just 1 of each. They all come from the same spot on the power supply just different yellows go to different parts of a computer, floppy cd drive, etc.. So you are wrong. Sorry.
questions about amp and psu size>>> Im thinking that to keep your PSU from turning off when turned up, you will need to make sure everything at max output is within the max power of your PSU or below....Im am sure that if you have a 800w amp and only a 600w PSU, that the PSU will be maxed by the time the amp is turned to 3/4 load.... If the PSU is constantly working at max, it will heat up and shut down for a bit......
4 10 inch subs 1200 watt ssl amp i have all the 12v connections from the psu to the amp it runs for 2 mins then the heavey bass will shut down the psu it says on the psu brand name is newton ltd 12 volt 90 amp max is the psu strong enophe
Any help with why my PSU is shutting off when I connect to the head unit? All +12V wires (yellow) ganged together and all ground (black) ganged together. Red and yellows from the head unit connected to power and blacks connected as well. 500 watt PSU shuts down immediately. Ideas (anyone)?
to be actually helpful, check the voltages make sure theres no shorts, possibly drawing too much current or the short circuit protection is kicking in.
@PowerOfDixieland No mate you need to tell the p[ower supply to be on so what you have to do is link a black and green cable together from power supply and then you should be ok
why all that hassle? i bought two peavey cs 1200 power amps for $600 now i have 1200rms watts 4ohm per channel and i'll i have to do is plug in to 110 plug.
put it this way. does the CAR BATTERY have any amount of "watts" NO so all u need is a power supply thats over 200 watts till whenever it stops i dont think u can do anything under that xD hope i helped. and if u want a little more info maybe check out "barevids" video about his Fusion amp hooked up with a power supply.
More than likely yes, but I would go with a 650 due to the fact that the power supply only peaks at 500 the higher wattage supply you get the better off you are, check on ebay or something I found quite a few 1000watt supplies for less than 20 on there.
@bestdeafguy11 you can get 4 500 watt psu's for $200 and wire them all together and get 2000 watt continues power instead of buying a $400 psu that offers you the same power.
@MarantzSt153 sure, if you have a 1000w + amp. they have 1000w psu's too you know. it would power it easily. and even more. 3000w.... resort to a car battery.
@ryanpk12 You could have a 2000W psu, but only 20 amps on the 12 volt rail. common rule of thumb is supply current close the the total fuse rating on the amp.
@MarantzSt153 where did you get your information from? There are some pc power supplies that can deliver over 50 amps on the 12 volt rail and I've seen some that can deliver even more. Even if you have some massive 1000 watt RMS amp it is possible to use the outputs of two or more power supplies so long as you prevent them feeding back into each other by using diodes.
Ok I'll answer that if no one else will there being asses so the head unit being your "Deck" or stereo you know... Pioneer, Alpine, KenWood, Clarion its just called the head unit its what tells what to do what like turning on amp and how much bass to pump ya. later
No the watts on the +12volt rails do to need to add up to the wattage of the system. Say you have a 400W PSU and a 600W amp it is OK but the PSU might overheat.
It aif its all depends what the amperage on the +12v rail is. If its a 600watt amp divide that by 12 That equals 50, So you need 50 amps on the 12v rail to suply the Amp properly.
no it doesnt, i myself have two psus that are under my amps wattage rating (1200 watts) and it works fine.
Just be careful, the amp will demand a lot of power, which will cause the wires going from the psu to the +12v and GND to melt, because their will be so much current going through them.
bigmfp........hav u tried a difrent black wire......remember the green and black wire shud be besides eachother......from my understanding they r wires 14 and 15
line out converter, easiest way to go from the wire to rca plugs i believe you are looking for. you can find one at your local audio shop for about 15 bones or so, and if you really look you could find one for less than 10.
yellow on PSU attaches to both yellow and red on HU. Black on HU attaches to black on PSU.....basically the yllow is the 12volt wire, red on HU is power wire, black is ground. Dont forget to join up both BLACK and GREEN on PSU together to start it up
the head unit is the stereo coz the red an yello wire is from the stereo, but ipod can be connected from stereo which has the aux input if u no wat i mean
I'll turn up the mp3 player some and the amp will cut off and on kinda. (idk exactly what it's doing) why?

put it this way. does the CAR BATTERY have any amount of "watts" NO so all u need is a power supply thats over 200 watts till whenever it stops i dont think u can do anything under that xD hope i helped. and if u want a little more info maybe check out "barevids" video about his Fusion amp hooked up with a power supply.
dawggg101 2 years ago
@bestdeafguy11
More than likely yes, but I would go with a 650 due to the fact that the power supply only peaks at 500 the higher wattage supply you get the better off you are, check on ebay or something I found quite a few 1000watt supplies for less than 20 on there.
ShinRay805 1 year ago
@bestdeafguy11 you can get 4 500 watt psu's for $200 and wire them all together and get 2000 watt continues power instead of buying a $400 psu that offers you the same power.
carguyzo6 2 years ago
@carguyzo6 but then you would need four wall plugs.
Harrybj17 2 years ago
how much psu do i need for a 3000watts sub
thelankanboyz 2 years ago
if that is the RMS output power than u'll need PSU which is also high in power but whatever the power of u'r PSU is, will be u'r overall output power
esjayay 2 years ago
maximum power output.....u'r sound depends on u'r PSU power

Are the wires you use to connect the amp and the speakers, the same as youd use to connect an amp and speakers in a car?

hey guys

tamilrmx 2 years ago
I'm Only saying That A Pc Supply Isn't Good Enough If you have an Strong amp.
MarantzSt153 2 years ago 6
@MarantzSt153 WRONG!!! I have a 1000w amp and a 1000w power supply.. u can get 1250w+ power supplys.. :)
BrianBBZz 1 year ago
@MarantzSt153 sure, if you have a 1000w + amp. they have 1000w psu's too you know. it would power it easily. and even more. 3000w.... resort to a car battery.
kyismaster 1 year ago
@MarantzSt153 it really is...so your saying a 1200w psu will not be enough for a strong amp? u so crazeh
ryanpk12 1 year ago
@ryanpk12 You could have a 2000W psu, but only 20 amps on the 12 volt rail. common rule of thumb is supply current close the the total fuse rating on the amp.
puresofmeh 1 year ago
@MarantzSt153 you can get 1200 W PSU's...
geotron555 1 year ago
@MarantzSt153 where did you get your information from? There are some pc power supplies that can deliver over 50 amps on the 12 volt rail and I've seen some that can deliver even more. Even if you have some massive 1000 watt RMS amp it is possible to use the outputs of two or more power supplies so long as you prevent them feeding back into each other by using diodes.

ALWAYS ALWAYS A PC Supply Use an 12 V Adapter Or some Or a Car charger!?

THE CAR STEREO

the stereo
dillon9168 2 years ago
Ok I'll answer that if no one else will there being asses so the head unit being your "Deck" or stereo you know... Pioneer, Alpine, KenWood, Clarion its just called the head unit its what tells what to do what like turning on amp and how much bass to pump ya. later
HellBoyAKABadBoy 2 years ago
does the psu watts need to be the same as the amplifier?
and if my "head unit" is a sound card from my pc does it need to have a specific signal-noise db? :)
al3xxThEUnDeRtAkEr 2 years ago
No the watts on the +12volt rails do to need to add up to the wattage of the system. Say you have a 400W PSU and a 600W amp it is OK but the PSU might overheat.
xboxlive6 2 years ago
It aif its all depends what the amperage on the +12v rail is. If its a 600watt amp divide that by 12 That equals 50, So you need 50 amps on the 12v rail to suply the Amp properly.
Ne1170 2 years ago
no it doesnt, i myself have two psus that are under my amps wattage rating (1200 watts) and it works fine.
Just be careful, the amp will demand a lot of power, which will cause the wires going from the psu to the +12v and GND to melt, because their will be so much current going through them.
UltiGamer101 2 years ago
does any one have any pointers for me , my power lighs on the amp are flashing !?
19Aiden93 2 years ago
hav no idea but hav u put a piece of wire in remote and 12volt ?
esjayay 2 years ago
yeah i cut off a piece of my normal remote wire and put it in the 'remote' and the 'battery'
19Aiden93 2 years ago
could be a short
xboxlive6 2 years ago
check all the cables connected to the speakers, PSU and the amp terminals. try it without the speakers connected.

the red and yellow wire from head unit is joined together and then joined to yellow wire on the PSU to start head unit
esjayay 2 years ago
bigmfp........hav u tried a difrent black wire......remember the green and black wire shud be besides eachother......from my understanding they r wires 14 and 15
c if it works
esjayay 2 years ago
im pretty sure u can add another switch even if the PSU alredy has a switch.....
esjayay 2 years ago
dude instead of a power supply you can use a car battery charger its way easier
damionthebeast 2 years ago
The only problem with that is a amp need's around 20amps + and a car battery charger is less than 1 amp
xboxlive6 2 years ago
thanks for the pic my setup works great
smallvillegod 2 years ago
does the green wire connect to all the black wires
smallvillegod 2 years ago
No, just one. It's what signals the PSU to turn on.
Also, if your PSU doesn't have a power switch on the back, you may connect the green and a black wire to a switch so you can turn the PSU on and off.
TehMG 2 years ago
instead of bridge the +12 on the amp could u use the remote wire from the head unit
xXmaxtunerXx 2 years ago
no it wont work
esjayay 2 years ago
is there any way to hook up the amp to a stereo receiver?
Dombajom 3 years ago
the HEAD UNIT is the stereo!
esjayay 3 years ago
line out converter, easiest way to go from the wire to rca plugs i believe you are looking for. you can find one at your local audio shop for about 15 bones or so, and if you really look you could find one for less than 10.
larchee07 3 years ago
do i need ac or dc current?
bradywylie 3 years ago
this might sound stupid but what is a PSU? some sort of power converter?
bradywylie 3 years ago
PSU is a POWER SUPPLY UNIT which is the main power supply inside ur computer, u know the fan which u c from behind pc is PSU
esjayay 3 years ago
Does a 220w PSU works with car amps?
Qibai 3 years ago
is it alright to use a 4 ohm sub with this configuration.
bocaj3400 3 years ago
yeah but bridge the sub to 2 ohms
esjayay 3 years ago
so the yellow goes to yellow, red attaches to yellow and red on cd reciever, and black attaches to black?
LuvVids32 3 years ago
yellow on PSU attaches to both yellow and red on HU. Black on HU attaches to black on PSU.....basically the yllow is the 12volt wire, red on HU is power wire, black is ground. Dont forget to join up both BLACK and GREEN on PSU together to start it up
esjayay 3 years ago
the head unit is the stereo coz the red an yello wire is from the stereo, but ipod can be connected from stereo which has the aux input if u no wat i mean
esjayay 3 years ago
is the head unit the car stereo ?
