"Look: War is Money - the arms manufacturers tell us once we get our bomb factories up to full production the whole economy is gonna collapse - the Soviets are in the same boat so We all agree it is time for the Big One so whaddaya say?" - DKs
@ChaosDynamics Its' all about precision. Yes as a civilization we come a long way. we don't just have to watch genocide occur we can actually perform and experience it first hand. Anyone got a cigarette. ...Tango, Zulu, Whiskey, Bingo. ...
In 1958, long-range ICBM's were still in development. Nuclear payloads were to be delivered by jets, short-range missiles (such as those fired by submarines) and mid-range missiles.
I love these vintage movies - It shows the very base of the internet, communication, visual, maps, etc. The cold war was some special period of history. They mention, a B-47 exploded at take off...sobotage...hummm, that was part of the risks stating that spies were presents in USA. It's impressive to see the technology back then. Funny thing, the B-52 are still in operation in 2011. When something is build right, it stays, as opposed to the technology we build today.
A Soviet pre-emptive strike with a handful of missiles and some bombers? They were all too aware of SAC's capabilities, as well as the DEW lines in Canada, to do something that stupid.
Yeah, I don't think the US command would've taken that idea seriously either. My guess for something like this occuring would have something to do with the instability of the USSR. Perhaps a coup, terrorist attack, or even just a malfunction in Soviet equipment, which made the Soviet high command believe that it was they who were being attacked. The latter has occured. I don't think at any time, the Kremlin would've decided 'hey let's start a nuclear war.'
Back in 1958 America had nuclear superiority. That is why Kruschev tried to put missiles in Cuba in 1963. Kruschev knew it would be years before the Soviets could catch up

I think we are fortunate that Josef Stalin did not live into the late 1950s and Khrushchev had a cooler head!
