tell the idiot kid that a bear that size has a mother close by and he could have been ripped to shreads, that was just ignorant in the 1st place, spraying a yearling how stupid are you guys
@bullmoosecalhoun the bear was at least 3 years old, not a yearling. We were told this by the paid professionals who study black bears year-round. And there was no mother anywhere in site because this was a fully grown black bear.
One of the dumbest things I've seen! Let the bear be. You don't spray it unless it is coming for you. You could have easily slowly backed away. And chasing it was just absolutely stupid. It could have easily decided to turn on you and would have no problem killing you.
@ryangi5 as I've said before, this bear was actively attempting to get into the tents and buildings in this camp. As per proper bear protocol, it was the staff's duty to attempt to scare the bear away in such a manner that it's comfort with humans would dissapear. This really wasn't stupid at all, but in a fact an attempt by NAYLE staff to prevent the necessity of killing a magnificent predator because of people leaving trash around.
I was on staff for NAYLE Session 3 this summer and we had 14 bear sightings. I, was a 16 year old female on staff, and we are all perfectly capable of handling the bears that entered RMSC. These bears are harmless if you simply follow the bear rules. Quite honestly, the bears are much more scared of us than we are of them.
Philmont area has had two bear attacks in the last year or so. there were minor but it shows that bears are still willing to pounce a tent when you least expect it. Same basic rules apply everywhere there might be bears. Most importantly do not have your big ole bag of trail mix in your tent with you....
@cftbq the guy in the video chasing the bear is a paid and trained member of the Philmont staff. His only job, as one of two bear researchers in the entire 100,000+ acre ranch, is to deal with problem bears in the area and chase them away from the established camps. Furthermore, there were several adults on hand and the entire camp was practicing proper bear safety procedure... just so you know :)
