  • I get quite annoyed when women say that they are not going to bother voting. They just don't realize what women went through to get equality.

  • @MrBarmybob And what they put others through - they are hailed heroines but really they were vandals!

  • @rhyfelwrDuw Yes I agree, they did many things that with hindsight actually made matters worse.I,m saying that innocent people were affected for nothing if nobody uses their long sought after vote.

  • @leilani7mk Saved you from what?????

  • Its even fucked up that the majority of people run to the jockey instead of towards Emily.

  • Bitch. My great grandad had 10 shillings on that horse

  • rip girl you saved us

  • @Copperpopper Wow. I don't know if I'm more shocked at your ignorance or your sexist attitude towards one of the bravest people who ever lived. And calling her selfish really was the icing on the dumbass cake that is your comment! Doing what she did brought equality so much closer for women who were otherwise slaves to men, and I don't think I speak alone when I say that giving your live to improve the quality of so many others' is the most selfless act you can commit! Hang your head in shame.

  • Let's be honest, if it wasn't for the war women wouldn't have had the right to vote for a LOT longer. Suffragettes were violent and, in a sense, foolish, which would show MPs that they were irresponsible. The suffragists were taking a long time to actually get their point across. The war allowed women to show themselves as mature, trustworthy hardworkers, who were equal to men.

  • @Copperpopper I dunno but maybe the reason why the Canadian women got the right to vote earlier and they didn't need to sacrifice their lives was because the men listened

  • I don't think most people understand this video before they watched it. Also everyone criticising her she went through so much pain you can't imagine. And she didn't die straight away as most people think she died after 3 days of having to endure the pain of a lung puncture

  • What a stupid woman i feel sorry for the guy on the horse because he killed himself after this

  • Interesting to read the very impassioned comments from both sides. Lots of misunderstandings. So judgmental..has any1 actually walked a mile in those shoes?

OK, 300kg horse at full speed plus a Vote 4 Women banner was not a bright idea, but by most accounts she was a very intelligent women (teacher & governess) prone to acts of desperation.

The jockey (Diamond Jones) did indeed commit suicide. 38yrs later.

In prison once, a warden tried to flood her barricaded cell - nearly filled it up too!

  • @daLizardBreth As well as inteligent, clearly determined as she gained her first class degree having lost her father, having to drop out of the college in order to work and continue her studies at night...

I believe the incident of "flooding" you refer to was when she was imprisoned in Strangeways. The state had begun their policy of forcefeeding and Emily had apparently barricaded herself in. almost freezing cold water being hosed in was another attempt at punishment. They failed!

  • @daLizardBreth btw, an inquiry was forced about such attempts to break the spirit whilst in strangeways and apparently Emily received 40 shillings "compensation" for the brutal treatment she had received...

She was a prolific writer for the cause as well as an activist and if you are familiar with the phrase; "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.", then Emily's own battle cry should make more sense; "Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God"!

  • @Copperpopper well said im female 2 yes it was stupid of her do that .

  • Ok, so I'm all for animal rights and such (vegetarian for 9 years), but all the people going on about the horse and call Emily Davison 'silly' or a bitch; are you having a fucking laugh? If you're a girl or woman from the UK, then she is one of the reasons that we have the rights that we do today! Would you rather that we were expected only to get married, then cook, clean, and do whatever the fuck our husbands told us to? She did this for you, so stop being so pathetic.

  • @Copperpopper HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT! shes a brave woman who tryed to get a message across! and did it for the better... anyway she wasnt supposed to kill the horse she was only gonna stop it get on it and go round on it and show of the message... but it went wrong so, i think u need to learn history... dont call a very brave woman that :/

  • @Copperpopper Learn before you decide to make such a comment the amount of broke bones she recived how bad the internal bleeding was that unimagionable pain she went through just so men would give women the respect they deserve and the right to vote, not many would of done such a thing and this is how you respect her courage? Wow I would love to send you and people like you back and make you a suffragette so you could see, learn and feel what it was like and maybe understand them better.

  • @Copperpopper Take it you're a guy?

She did this to protest against people like you

  • not only is it incredibly offensive, it is extremely childish.

  • you guys don't appreciate the fact that that although a bad choice, she died for her cause while you pussies are playing call of duty thinking your hard...

  • @MrLOLTRAKTOR LOL!!

What was the official reason for the US in Afghan? Was it something to do with oppressive regimes & the rights of the people? It wasn't ALL oil & revenge, was it? (No offense meant 2 the troops. xxx)

There are some parallels between the 2 events; debate over the motives & whether the end justifies the means.

But isn't it interesting that the greatest country in the world can use extreme methods (and make very questionable, even bad choices)...but one woman can't??

  • NOOOOOOO, Is the horse alright?

  • @Malusregnum more like is the woman alright, she did this for the better

  • History teacher had a right go at me when my first question was 'Was the horse alright?'..

  • @KiraCyan96 well said about the horse. as horse cost a lot .

  • @KiraCyan96 lol yes it was

  • @Copperpopper dude do u even know why she did it?

  • I love how many people have watched this video with no idea what its about. Go google it...its not hard.

  • @Copperpopper Apparently The Horse Had to Be Put Down:/

  • suffragette- putting flag onto the horse..stupid idea.

  • @honeybee1415 she died for her cause! That was the whole idea"!

  • Hmm; Suicide or Protest gone wrong?

  • @Copperpopper LOL!!!!

  • Stupid Cow...I feel bad for the horse though...

  • why?

  • 1:35 w8 i dont get what im seeing whats this a picture of

  • @ChuckBooty wtf

  • Everyone's an asshole. But me.

  • idiot

  • @Copperpopper the horse was put down and the rider then commited suicide because of her she was a dumb bitch

  • Suffragette sing we've done it ding-ding in prison we proteted and when our hunger stike!

I'm sorry i just HAD to do that...

  • @jasmineb226 derby day june 13 in front of king and queen committed sacrifice supreme

  • @Tristanjplane Horrible Histories? :)

  • @jasmineb226 Became a famous martyr, how did men react? We can't give votes to women if they're so stupid they'll do that!

  • whys is every one hating on her what she did was heroic she died trying to help all women

  • Poor horse :(

  • I have all the respect for her. Women since the beginning of history and even now still have to fight for our place. I just think about how desperate she must have felt to put herself in such danger. This was only one stunt out of many she did for the rights of women. She did not waste her life, because we are still talking about its effect to this day and minute. I am inspired by her effort.

  • @Copperpopper haha your an idiot she was fighting for rights if she didnt do that you probablly wouldnt be here and also the horse got shot

  • so glad she died. caused so much trouble all to get votes for women in a time when clearly it wasnt going to happen, partly due to no one going to give in to the freakish terrorism of those manic women. i respect the peaceful protestors, as no sufrage for women is ridiculous, but the WSPU is something i seriously hate. glad they stopped in ww1, or else veveryone would of just shot them haha

  • @Copperpopper -__- erm how can be calling her a dumb bitch. I beg you get your facts right. She done it for the women of England. Your comment aint funny. You should be ashamed of yourself.

  • anndd its gone

  • the rider survived, so who cares? no one was going to morn the horse, it didn't have any friends or family to moren it, while Emily Davison did, and here you are callong her an idiot, its disgusting. When they showed this in my class, because they were doing the suffergettes, everyone LAUGHED as the horse hit her. Is that acceptable? no, no one laughs at people protesting in London, people getting killed in protest, but her being killed by a horse, they find that funny disgusting

  • @Gummybunnybearsmiles i know exactly what you mean. thank you for saying that.

  • @Gummybunnybearsmiles I agree with you, man. No one laughed when they showed this video, thank God, but everyone saying she was stupid to jump in front of a horse is wrong. And even then, she didn't jump.

Is that acceptable? no, no one laughs at people protesting in London, people getting killed in protest, but her being killed by a horse, they find that funny, disgusting

  • Stop being such sexist JERKS! a woman DIED! If you call her stupid then you don't understand what it was like for woman back then, they had no rights, when she married, everything went to her husbband, even if her difforced her, woman wern't allowed to speak for themselves, they just had to do as their husband said, and were expected to just always agree with them. Don't call her 'silly' or a 'fucking bitch' as it was all the goverments fault, who cares if some stupid horse died?

  • What the fuck are you doing running out into the middle of a horse race lady?

  • she deserved it for being SO stupid, the horse is running at such a speed that it is impossible to stop him instantly..

    puta estupida

  • can we discuss intelligently without the name calling?

  • What a silly,silly woman.

  • murio decapitada???? se ve que sale como una cabeza rodando hacia un costado...

    que horrible...

  • Poor horse! Hope it was okay.

  • FYI: Every man who voted for the 19th amendment was voting against his own interest.

You see, the fewer participants in a democratic system, the more sway each individual voter has. Assuming that women made up 50% of the population, then all males would have had a 50% decrease in their votes' importance.

This of course, assumes that all males vote as a monolithic bloc and that gender does not affect political stance. If we assume so, then the equation gets hard.

  • @Scitech101

Oops, I mean if we assume otherwise (as is the real case) then the equation gets hard: If the male's political desires were more similar to those of women than to those of his fellow men, then he probably WAS voting in his interest. Otherwise, no.

  • Why ...just why don't women use their heads....i mean there are hundreds of flaws in what suffragists did in their campaigns ... their goal was achieving equal women rights and in a fit of puny female temper they tend to do horrifying things...remember that suffragette who attacked a 16th or 17th century painting with a meat cleaver...others had painted red paint on other paintings...they left a lasting impression on women...and i daresay its not a very pleasant one!

  • @phillipmarie FYI the suffragists moved from peaceful to none peaceful protest as they were being ignored, also emily didnt mean to kill herself she was tryin to attatch a flag of the suffragists to the kings horse! also she had a B.A Honours and was a teacher not dumb!!! Do ur history again idiot bcus ur clearly mistaken! and very rude, these ladys got us the vote u need to re-learn ur history as u clearly know f.a and ur opinion is incorrect, idiot

  • This is what happens when women leave the kitchen.

  • I think she was brave she was prepared to kill herself so women could get the rite to vote

  • @kattygilly i think she eas stupid for spoiling her life in such a silly way..their is many otehr ways to fight for womans right than puting urself infront of a 300kg+ horse at top speed

  • what a dumb cunt

  • @oC00nz i prefer 'fucking retard' myself

  • Women can't race themselves, so instead they get even and make it harder for men to steer...

  • WATCH watch?v=fJBdPFfnZHU&NR=1

  • You know there is evidence that she didn't want to kill herself. She had a theatre ticket and bus ticket in her bag for that evening. Many people believe she just wanted to stick a banner on the horse.

  • Women Divers....

  • She was a dumbass. Not only did she basically commit suicide in front of a crowd of people but she also injured an innocent horse jockey. Its unfair to people who die under really tragic circumstances. I find it hard to feel sorry for her.

  • @raccoongirl100 and horse

  • Listverse.

  • @AHWIDGE ?

  • What's with the childish comments? Someone's who's dying isn't something to joke about. Grow up.

  • Dumb Bitch

  • what a dumbass

  • no wonder we didn't give women the same rights as men haha

  • listverse brought me here.

  • @rabcarr230869

Shut up and stop sayin you wer there cause u obviously werent . This is almost a century ago!!

  • I was actually present at this race. A terrible tragedy

  • @rabcarr230869 Whaaat!? That was a hundred years ago?

  • At least the horse made it. Piss on her. She endangered a horse's life. Fuck her. Hope her death was nice and painful.

  • @Lassannn that's exactly how i felt when i saw this

  • @Lassannn Are you making stupid comments on every video? You dumbass.

  • @allana221 Yeah I am. Whatcha think about that, cunt nigger? Goddamn you, fucking sugarfuck. I'll rape you. I will motherfuckin rape you, fuckstorm.

  • @Lassannn

    Uuuuhhh... you're a psychopath.

  • @MrWonderboy1988 Take it from me...don't feed the troll.

    LoLoLLoLoLLoLoL

  • A lot of respect for that women, she changed the world for women nearly everywhere. I thought it was Emilene though?

  • Her selfishness could have killed that Jockey.

  • If this happened today we'd be saying "what an idiot"

  • you stand in front of a running horse you get hurt, people do stupid things and then just say it was for a cause and everyone calls them a hero.

  • heh. women's rights. lololololol

  • just proves how stupid women are

  • Thumbs up if Listverse brought you here!

If this comment makes you mad, then you're the dumb.

  • I understand her cause but she shouldn't have put someone's life at risk for it.

  • The people who say she was an idiot are fucked up sexist jerks with no heart

  • @Gummybunnybearsmiles would YOU jump in front of a horse running at full speed intentionally? If not, then don't judge people and call them jerks.

  • Some one said 'poor horse' think about the woman KILLED by it. It makes me Gurkhas that people think of that stupid horse like oh dear the horse died when a human being someones daughter, peoples friend, was killed by the animal. What really makes me sick is that they showed this footage in my history class, and do you how they all reacted? They LAUGHED! They laughed at a poor lady being hit by a horse. How could the government not give woman the thought after her heroic sacrifice?

    If you say

  • @Gummybunnybearsmiles Well that woman knew she would get hurt and maybe die eventually. It was her choice. This horse was forced to join the stupid race. Not to mention those millions of animals that have been used by people for entertaining reasons and much more cruel stuff. So yeah, poor horse.

  • @agriokuparrisi So going by your logic, she was protesting the treatment of animals by jumping in front of one going full speed which could have injured the horse and earned it a bullet in the head. That's smart.

Anyway, she was a suffrage activist and was protesting for women's right to vote and run for office. I have no clue why you are talking about animals. Do your research before you open your face. It's very disrespectful to her memory.

  • Lesson of the day: "Women... Stay in the kitchen..."

  • FALCON HORSE!

  • To all you fuck wits. Emily Davison stepped out infront of the kings horse , named anima. This would have a bigger impact. She was a martyr . In her pocket she had a diary witch had future dates init , she also had a return ticket home - this infers she was planning not to kill herself but just make impact . After being run over she had a beoken rib and was bleeding from her mouth and nose - the next day she died of internal dammage .

  • She also put the life of one or more persons at danger by doing that.

  • Bloody hell! That must have hurt...a lot! Well done love x

  • This is such a sad moment in English history, but I am proud that she did this. Even though she didn't try to kill herself and if anyone wants to question that she wasn't trying to kill herself, reply because I have TRUE proof x

  • @TheDaisydukes123 I dont beleive she wanted to die. but it is one of Histories many unknown things. but if you say you have proof then i'd love to hear/see it. as i said, i dont think she intended to die :( Poor Miss Emily Davison

  • god bless her and the suffragettes and suffragits

  • shit... hows the horse?

  • Yes that was the kings horse, and to all you stupid ignoramus' out there, you are completely missing the obvious point that this heroic woman had risked her life for a revolutionary cause and her life, a tragic one at that, had come to an end as she was promoting what she thought would change the lives of millions of women in the future so please show some respect and stop being so immature

  • @ClassicComic2 For one thing, Emily Pankhurst and the opther women who civilly and politely protested in the streets did more good than this one. She didn't die a martyr, because nobody was forcing her to renounce her beliefs. Secondly, how is jumping in front of a horse dying for what you believ ein? She wasted a good life, thats it. She was, and I sya this without meaning to be rude, too dumb too live and too dumb to know what is the right way of doing things. Its not devotion, its fanaticism.

  • @philipmarie1854 Uhm... Emmeline Pankhurst (not Emily) did not protest peacefully. She and many other women burnt down churches, chained themselves to the Palace and destroyed Oxford Street.

The SuffraGISTs protested peacefully and made very, very slow progress. Thats why the SuffraGETTES took over and were much more violent.

*If* she jumped in front of the horse to kill herself (see below) then there is a point. She would become the first marytr which inspired more women to fight for rights.

  • @TheFoal395 I didn't know that. I don't know a lot of history about the suffragette movement and while I do uphold womens' rights (I'm a hardcore traditionalist Catholic by the way) you just can't cross the line. Protest yes, but burning churches is the work of a monster. My point is that its better to protest civilly than to pointlessly do a suicide like that. She didn't die a martyr, nobody was forcing her agaisnt her will. Women were already protesting, she surely didn't inspire them by THAT.

  • @philipmarie1854 It's dying for what you believe in because she wanted votes for women and she thought that this was the only was to get publicity for her cause. You say she is too dumb but you can't even spell. She went to Oxford University and got a first-class degree, which is something not many people can say even now! The suffragettes were dealing with a society ruled by men which had been oppressing them for centuries. This was their way of freeing themselves.

  • @TiaTtoise75 I'm not saying that votes for women are bad, far from that. However, burning Churches and commiting suicide is not good. Its liek saying, hey, he burned the house of an innocent lady but at least he's not Osama bin Laden. Those are not spelling mistakes exactly, those are typos from writing too fast,it doesn't mean I'm stupid (duh!) Men oppressed them? Are you kidding me? Sure there were privileges in government stuff that women couldn't have but that doesn't mean they were treated

  • @TiaTtoise75 poorly. There were women celebrities as men ones and there were as many influential, intelligent women as there were men. What, were women rounded up and burned? A man until the late 1800's I read (in England here at least) could lockup and beat his wife but thats was more because of neglect than hatred of females. I mean, seriously, oppressing them? Didn't both sexes live with each other in peace since the beginning of time? When did women ask to become amazons like wonder woman?

  • @philipmarie1854 She didn't jump out in front of the horse... she was trying to pin a 'Votes for Women' banner on the horse so that when it crossed the finish line the banner would be waving. Get your facts right before you criticise anyone.

  • @philipmarie1854 you dont know a thing you fat homo

  • @gamerfoyboy DON'T CALL ME FAT!

  • @philipmarie1854 She was a teacher,

she did not have a degree but that is because she could not afford fees

Miss Davison committed sacrifice supreme and did it for what she believed in.

so if fighting for what you believe in is dumb, then i wouldn't want to be smart.

  • @philipmarie1854 Civilly and polite protests???

hunger strikes, breaking into parliament shouting votes for women, and chaining themselves to railings??

    how very polite

  • @failinshaggy Yeah, I know, my mistake. The suffragites on the other hand didn't do those things.

  • @philipmarie1854 Peaceful protest started in 1903 with the appointment of Emily Pankhurst as leader they started doing things that would get them noticed even if they did get thrown in prison

  • OOOMMMMMMMMFFFFFFG HER HEAD CAME OUT EWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!"!"4234

  • @GanjaTaco12 her head didn't come of you div it was her hat cus she died later that day in hospital...

  • @GanjaTaco12

it wasn't her head, I believe thats her hat. In fact, I know that is her hat because there is proof as her head was not decapertated from her body when 'recovered' x

  • @Farmingyerr there is debate over whether she actually intended to kill herself, some say she was trying to pin a Suffragette ribbon on the king's horse. And really, someone commiting suicide to bring attention to a cause isn't "LOL" in any case.

  • omg, lol

  • my history teacher showed my class this vid 2day and we ALL kept talking about it.

  • The horse was the kings horse right?

  • revolutionary suicide

  • sad? really? You have to take into account she want trying to kill herself, she was trying to stop the horse. So really this is an idiot jumping infront of a horse going at full speed, which is like running infront of a bullet and trying to catch it between your teeth. so actually, LOL

  • R.I.P. Emily !

    So sad :(

  • tht is very sad she was so stupid but good to do tht

    R.I.P Emily Davison

  • I was watching this in histroy for an GCSE Module.

And my mate sat next to me sees Emily Davison get hit by the Kings Horse and he shouts out

    'OMG IS THAT HORSE Ok?'

  • @bullseatpizza People who value other animals more than humans are the worst type of scum.

  • @WrathOfTheTyrants

Oh sssh and see the funny side for once ahaha

  • @bullseatpizza I bet everyone thought that was realllly funny

  • @bullseatpizza thats weird cuz thats exactlly what happened to me today

  • @Ellit3xSN1P3

    Cool story bro! :)

  • fucking women.

  • lesbians

  • The music doesn't help...I read she actually outlived the horse by four days.

  • @909kong actually the horse survived

  • @jammydodgers241 Wikipedia needs an update, then.

  • So what do you think happened? I think she went there to protest for the suffragettes but then changed her mind and decided to die and become a Martyr. I feel sorry for her though.

  • this in true honesty is my best mates great great aunt and i only learned that today

  • @GhostlyKudu2 really????

  • OWWW

  • horse was fine. woman died 3 days later from internal injuries and jockey recovered but never race again. in 1918, women over 30 got the vote.

  • @witchdoctorification acctually she died on the track the horse snaped her neck :P

  • @pwincessyouni acctually she didn't she died in hospital :P

  • @pwincessyouni

NO, She died four days later in hospital. -.-

  • best History Source EVER

  • i think she's hurt....

  • :( poor her

  • As much as I admire this women she really did ruin that jockey's life. He never got over killing her even though it wasn't his fault and ended up killing himself later in life.
