I love the old movies! The inaccuracies in this film are so ridiculous! Attacks from Indians and the flintlock rifles which have the same audio as the old Winchesters in the Western films. I'm surprised the cavalry doesn't come to the aid of Lewis and Clark, led by Nathan Brittles (John Wayne) to repel the attacks from Sitting Bull and a hoard of Mexican Banditos! These old films are real amusing!
Were there any French colonies living in this territory at that time? If not, what use of the land was it the French to where they claim ownership. What's more, why did we pay them for it when we could have easily just taken it. Our only adversaries were the indians.
@pucksterz12 I'm not an expert on this, but I will give you my somewhat educated opinion. In some way the French had a claim on the land. We would not want to just take it, because if we did, then who would honor our claims in the future? Furthermore, France had just helped us in our American Revolution to gain our independence, so we saw them in a good way, in a friendly way. Also, why take something by force when you are offered such a good price for it.
Lol it would have cost more to go to war with France over Louisiana than it was to buy it. In modern money the purchase was roughly 250 million.... Thats not even a fifth the cost to build one aircraft carrier, or twice as much to build a modern sports stadium.... The French sold the land at like 40cents an acre... man you could go out and buy a county for the price of a modern middle class home!
To call it a purchase is as accurate as calling it a give away...
There was for sure something for Mr. DuPont in this Louisiana deal , he was something like Napoleon representative in U.S. . Try DuPont on Wiki and you will see...
@heartlessvietboy Napoleon used it to fight a war. Basically he used it to kill people. Side note: about $11 million of it was given to the French while about $4 million of it was the United States canceling French debt.
This is an excellent movie. I saw it when it was new! (also the Ken Burns video). This is the most important expedition in American history equaled only by Apollo and the moon walk. Every American ought to be aware of the expedition and its journals (very complete history): Lewis, Clark, Sacajawea, relations with the indigenous peoples, the Sioux, the Nez Pierce, 54-40 or fight. Defines the 19th century actually (except for the Civil War). A classic movie.
You can find it at Amazon (The Far Horizons1955) or you can check Turner Movie Classics to see when it will be on again. They have an email alert to remind you when it is on.
Ya, that's his name. I forgot it when I was writing the description. I should have remembered it because he's in a short video of mine called: "Drive-in Beer served in your car - The 1940's were cool, well, except for the drunk drivers" where he he gets a beer at a 'drive-in', and out, hamburger joint.
Sacajawea in the back ground in some of these shots the native American girl. In my county there is a lake named after her while they explored the columbia river in Oregon and washington state.
sacagawea loooks funny

@lovbananaz It's because she's played by a white girl. I forget her name. She's a famous actress of back then.

Isn't any weapon an assault weapon?
heartlessvietboy 9 months ago
@heartlessvietboy
No... an assault rifle is a certain type of rifle.
CSATexan 9 months ago
How can a rifle assault you? Does it have arms and legs?
heartlessvietboy 9 months ago
@heartlessvietboy
A rifle can't assault anyone. That was my original point

@heartlessvietboy guns and drugs don't kill people
ArseneLupin2009 4 months ago
We need to eliminate guns and make it less-than lethal. We need to do away with smoking and chewing tobacco & alcohol.

This may be the most historically inaccurate movie ever made. I wish Hollywood would make a real movie of the Corps of Discovery. It would be epic!

What did France buy with the 15 Million America gave them for the Louisiana Region in 1803?? Doritos and Lay's??

What did he use, Can paper money fight a war? What did he buy to help him fight a war? How do you know it was $15 million?
heartlessvietboy 1 year ago
@heartlessvietboy He would have purchased guns and ammo and horses etc to fight the war. I read history, like in history books.

Guess that's all we were making. Obviously bronze and Copper was all we had. Along with gun powder.

Guns were the Evil. Without Guns, We all wouldn't be where we are today.

@heartlessvietboy
A gun is neither evil nor virtuous.
They are a tool nothing more
CSATexan 9 months ago
I agree. Man is the evil. But without guns that evil will kill 100,000 people instead of 1 Million.
heartlessvietboy 9 months ago
@heartlessvietboy
The ones with the better weapons would turn around and enslave the ones without.
Keep in mind that without the use of Guns
Caesar exterminated or enslaved 1/3 of all Gauls
Muslims killed untold millions of Hindus in India
And Genghis khan ethnically cleansed anyone that stood in his way.
All this without a single shot being fired
CSATexan 9 months ago
How can someone have a better weapon than you. You don't have a weapon!!
