@Frost3784 I think it was an attempt to make Archer less of the White Knight and more Human. The whole Xindi Arc was to show that the gloves were off and that Archer would go to any extreme to save Earth and Humanity. He was throwing away everything that had ever meant anything to him. His honor, self-respect, any semblance of a code of ethics he had believed that he lived by and held high. It was a question also, to the viewers.Think about the 9/11 events? What would any of us be willing to do?
I would have liked if the writers had done something like this for Voyager, like with the ship being heavily damaged, and a peaceful race with faster-than-warp technology refusing to trade for it
@Mkoberland actually this was a bit like equinox part 2 from voyager and on many occasions voy was heavily damage and used original ways to get back on its feet.
@miloootic Yeah, Voyager usually had some kind of a time travel reset button to reverse the damage. The one exception I can think of was in 'Deadlock,' and the ship didn't suffer any external damage, only internal, in that episode. Their warp drive certainly wasn't damaged beyond repair.
@miloootic To be fair, at the end of Year of Hell Janeway rammed the giant time cannon ship with a dying Voyager, resetting all the edits the guy had done and making it so that year never happened. So yes, it was a reset button, but at least a more justified one than some of the others that got hit on Voyager.
I hate that Archer says, "Because I have no choice!" That's BS, you always have a choice. Why not say, "My ship is the last best hope to prevent my species's extinction. Energize." He could beam away while saying, "I'm sorry..."
I wouldn't have minded this episode of the beginning of the fourth season had featured a follow-up. Imagine Starfleet sending the NX-01 back out to rescue the alien ship's crew and transport them home. Talk about an embarrassment, especially if some of the crew had died since Archer's raid. The writers missed a big opportunity here to show that if one "must" resort to thievery, come back and clean up your mess!!!
Realize that this was before the federation and the prime directive. He did what he
needed to do to save humanity. In the end of season three several episodes later you see the crew change the whole area back into normal space. That would give the other ship a better chance to contact their home world.
I can tolerate 'In the Pale Moonlight' but I can't bear to watch the nadir Archer is forced to sink to in this episode. This is one Star Trek episode I will definitely avoid in future.
I like the way that this episode goes, but doesn't anyone think it's a little too convenient that in one episode Enterprise loses warp-capacity in serious combat, and the episode after they come across a conveniently 'damaged' vessel, that Enterprise can overwhelm to steal a warp core to get theirs working... Furthermore, miraculously the alien warp coil they stolen for the warp core is compatible... I know I'm reading too much into it... But love this episode too :D
This is easily one of the best seasons of any television series I've seen. It was quite a journey watching the characters in a desperate race against time to stop a deadly thread to humanity, and seeing everyone stretched to their physical and emotion limits, forced to make hard and immoral decisions in their efforts to save Earth and mankind. Fantastic show.
@zzxcvb98 The Enterprise was in a race against time to locate the Xindi and destroy their weapon. They couldn't have afforded a side trip to return them to their homeworld, and they certainly couldn't have taken them with them on their mission.
they could've come back to pick them up after the immediate concern is resolved, alerted their race, etc. there were a number of alternatives to just abandoning them
In real life it would have been impossible for them to use that piece of equipment. It's hard to fit parts from different car manufacters onto the same car, fitting parts from totaly alien species would be highly unlikely.
I know it might be trivial but I still wonder what Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway would have done if the Warp Coil(s) of their ships was/were damaged beyond repair. (I guess that Picard would've tried diplomacy first)
It's different considering every captain lived in different time periods. Archer was this desparate because he had no help. Janeway was shown in year of hell that she could get the ship fixed up without raiding other ships. Picard/Sisko would probably call for help. Kirk would do the same thing archer did but not feel bad about it if it's to save his crew.
Kirk would've beamed himself over to the Xindi ships and beat the shit out of their respective captains with his bare hands, then fucked the Xindi women.
"Damage" is certainly one of the best ENT episodes, and one of the darkest Trek episodes. Like DS9 "In the Pale Moonlight", it's about the hero being forced to make hard decisions and do deeply immoral things to achieve a worthy goal. I like the way the title refers to more than one thing: the ship is damaged, T'Pol is damaged through her desire to become more open to her emotions, Archer is damaged, forced to become what he despised. And they're all at their lowest point here.
I wish I knew why the show got bad reviews or why it was cancelled after only 4 seasons. The station had a choice. They could've moved the show to a station that would've taken the show for another indefinite number of seasons or they could've listened to the viewers and kept the show for another indefinite number of seasons. Instead, they just dumped the show on its head and just let it die quickly! That's not right! Why do stations do that?
The Pirate was right, if you remember the start of Season 3. The man said you have to do things to survive out here. And stated Archer couldn't do them.
Archer had to take the warp coil. I think later in the series Archer goes on to say "their are somethings we should and should'nt be able to do otu here" which is a refernce or a callign for the prime directive. I love Enterprise and I can't understand why it got bad reviews.
I'll give you that about DS9, It was the best by a long shot. The Defiant was shit hot and so was Jadzia, The Dominion war was just mint, no other series could really compaire. Ent was epic though, it filled a lot of gaps and even had referenced to the Borg and the Cardassians who were not fully discorved until the 24th century. It also featured Humans, Andorians, Vulcans and Tellerites working together for the first time (The Four founders of the UFP).
ds9 was garbage the first couple of seasons. It didnt get good until they wrote in a starship for them to use. Enterprise failed miserably and turned off many fans from the first episode or two. Enterprise probably did get better over time but by then so few fans stuck through the crap to get the gold that they cancelled..
@hrobbins Not really. Season 1 of DS9 was weak because it had too many standalone and TNG-lite episodes, but it had great episodes like "Duet", "Emissary", "In the Hands of the Prophets" and some good character development. Season 2, however, was very good IMO, that's when the show found its way, it developed Bajorans and Cardassians, introduced the Maquis and the Dominion, and started some long storyarcs. It has some of my favorites like "Necessary Evil", "The Maquis", "The Wire"...
@dukeofstradone DS9 was the best Trek, but ENT was much better than most people give it credit for. Well, about half of it, at least. Season 1 wasn't bad and it was promising, but season 2 went nowhere and had too many bad and average episodes. But then the show got a complete makeover and a new direction in season 3. The last 2 seasons were good and it seemed to be on the right track, if it had gotten 3 more seasons it might have been remembered as great. Remember how awful TNG season 1 was?
@NANOFORGE it got bad rewiews because it wasen't that great of a show I love it but I have to ammit the to star trek seris suck fucking money nuts the acting was terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
