lots and lots of hard work. I've been playing for 11 years and I should be way way better. But i didn't practice enough at an early age. I would start with songs you really know because you'll have a good idea of how the drums go on the song. Over the years I've basically learned to single out the drums if I want to learn a part. So you just gotta listen close because there's usually a lot more going on in the music than what your average listener will pick up (ghost notes, roles, etc.)

Also - I wish I would've paid more attention to the basic drum rudiments. I think if I had mastered these rudiments, I'd be much more creative. So that's one thing I'm going to do. I suggest it for anyone learning drums
