  • get a bump it

  • beauuuuuuutiful!!!!!

  • You're so very clever. I wish I was as good as you. I am English and my hair is naturally blonde and extremely fine, you know the sor of thing - stereotypical Anglo-Saxon hair. IT's very difficult to do anything with it. x x x

  • What hairspray do you recommend that will hold but won't make your hair rigid and sticky?

  • This is a cute hair do! I must try

  • I think that this is a much better technique than using a bump-it! I don't have especially thin hair, but when I used a bumpit to try and create a bouffant of sorts, it could still be seen through my hair! I think teasing or backcombing works much better! Your tutorials are wonderful, thank you so much for all of your lovely vintage inspiration!

  • Love ittt !!! ;)

  • I love your blog! been watching it for a while now, have a look at mine xx

  • Awesome! The homemade bump is brilliant! Totally going to be trying that out.

  • Wow. I think at this point in time you are absolutely my hero! This is soooo good, and it actually worked the first time I tried it, which NEVER happens :D

  • Gosh, this is so good! I am glad I discovered your channel.

The most tutorials are just an andvertisement for a certain product (you won't get your hair straight without blablabla) or simply unintelligible. Thank you so much!

  • it's probably better than a bump it and more comfortable

  • All i can think about is Man Men when i watched this.

  • @ThoseAreRainboots meeeee tooooo! Love it :D

  • I've done a beehive based on this tutorial twice now - so many compliments!

I actually used my ponytail rather than a bump-it or hair rait to add the height - I put the ponytail right where my crown is, backcombed it and then pinned it to my head.

It works really well and is actually really quick to do. Hooray!! Thank you :) x

  • Such a good video, I'm going to do my hair like this for the weekend! Would you mind me linking this on my blog so others can find it? :) xxx

  • @EllieBruv Of course not! It would be an honor, I would love for you to link to it... thank you :)

  • @StrawberryKoiVintage Thanks so much. I'm so excited to try this hairstyle :)

  • this is a gorgeous and very elegant hair style (:

  • I'm definitely going to try this once I get the chance. You made it seem really user friendly : ) I love what you're wearing in this video, the sleeves are amazing.

  • I love these videos they are so pure, honest, very unique, and very vintage! I love that you go straight to the tutorial and don't spend your time selling high end expensive products to reproduce vintage hairstyles that were done without them! Very inspiring and trully vintage!

  • @vintageastroid Wow, thank you so much for a truly encouraging and uplifting comment :))

  • @vintageastroid I heartily agree!!

  • im getting to the pt in my relationship where im thinking about my wedding and saw a beautiful picture of an actress on mad men with an elegant beehive that i was thinking of updating with some loose curls on the bottom -sort of like a half up pony. it looked nearly exactly like yours but with a tiara (but i don't think ill go with one.) now with your tutorial i will know exactly how to achieve it myself or what to show my stylist!! thanx!

  • how many pinz do i need ?

  • Thank you! I've been looking for a tutorial for the 60's beehive thats actually GOOD!

  • Are you not a YouTube partner yet? Because you really, really should be. I've been looking for a good beehive tutorial for ages and yours is the best I found. Good work! :)

  • @Babbe I am, actually! Thank you so much... reading this makes me happy ^_^

  • I just discovered your videos, and wow, you're incredible! I love your style, and I'll definitely be trying out these looks. I just hope I can make my hair look half as good as yours!

  • @mnt031092 Thank you so much!!! You'll do an amazing job :)

  • of my god, I love you so much, you are my muse now.

your talents and beauty are so enviable, i admit that I'm a little jealous :)

  • @astridbelge Awe wow, thank you so much!!! What a heart-warming compliment :)

  • very audrey hepburn with an updated twist, this style never gets old cause it's sexy mixed with sophistication.

  • love your videos! they're very informative and easy to watch! thanks :)

  • Hahahah you killing me with the story ( more scary looking than ever before) You have a great channel, greetings form The Heat: Venezuela.

  • i love your top/dress. it soo pretty!!!

  • Oh, I haven't seen this video before cause I was on summer holidays when you uploaded it, but it is beautiful. I saw a similar chignon from another guru and I tried to make it last Christmas, it was far too dificult than your version, and you get the same exact result!!! I have to try your version now.

  • This is really sweet ! Keep up the good work :)

  • ADORABLE!!!!! X

  • Can you do a Zooey Deschanel Makeup look from Why Do You Let Me Stay Here by She & Him? Please!!!! I totally love her.

  • @alexinwonderland5393 I definitely want to do some more makeup looks, includings ones that Zooey does, I'm ust waiting for my computer to get back from the shop and to hopfully get a HD camera this month so the quality will be better! Wish me luck, and thank you! :)

  • o m g i l o v e i t

  • if i have a bump it, how should i place it?

  • Unfortunately, I do not have a bump-it, but I figure it is the same as any foreign object used to build volume: Place it just behind the teased section of hair, so that it builds up the hair's volume along with teased hair, and so that the teased hair disguises the object at the same time :)

  • That's great. Thankyou so much. The hairband just added a great touch to it. I will defo try this out.

  • i dont recommend the bump its. i bought them and they are useless!. the slip out easily and the shape is not all that nice...

  • I bought my girlfriend some bumpits takes her only 5 minutes

  • Very sweet style, I'm gonna try this weekend, thankyou!

  • I have been looking at beehive videos on youtube, and yours by far is the best. I LOVE the idea of using the hair extensions b/c I think bumpits are hard to use, and you can actually see them in people's hair sometimes ... at least the extensions will look natural. Thanks for the tutorial, and I am going to be wearing this look to a wedding tomorrow!! :)

  • That's awesome! Thank you so much, that really makes my day :) (Oh, and good luck!)

  • Your really beautiful and soft spoken, I like you!

  • Awe, thank you! =^_^=

  • Oh i'm so thrilled that you are gonna do a behive series! My boyfriend has allways wanted me to do my hair in a behive (although its because he likes the simpsons and marge has a beehive kind of do...wwell thats what they call her's anyway. BUT I am getting my very own Star Trek Original series (NOT the movie version) miniskirt uniform dress, and kn ee high black boots and i want to do some kind of hairstyle that is suited to that retro sort of look-and behives seem to fit the bill! Thanks!

  • Thank you so much! A late thank you, but this was a really sweet comment ^_^

  • Hurray for Star Trek!

  • LOL-yeah i'm a HUGE trekkie!

  • 4.20 even socks !!!!!!!! LOL

  • Just not stinky ones, haha :D

  • you could use some dried with fabric sheets that you like the smell of and it could serve as perfume!

  • thats such a good idea!

and yes. start trek does rock pretty hard.

  • LOL-i'm in love with maybe 3/4 of the men of star trek........at least from TOS, TNG, and VOY

  • hahaha.

i'm Spock all the way. and maybe a bit of Picard. Patrick stewart is crazy attractive. XD

  • love the tutorial. Keep them coming. Any bouffants from Turudich's books?

  • Thank you! I am not actually sure which books those are... sounds quite interesting :)

  • Great video, I just spent the last hour or so creating my very first beehive. It's a bit lopsided but with a pretty headband and bow no one will notice. Thanks so much for your guide, it worked wonders!

  • And music performed by yourself! what an ingenius way to get by the YT Music Police. If only I had talent!

  • The final result is so pretty. i'm gonna have to give this one a try even though my hair is short. We'll see....

  • Good luck, I'm sure the length will make it a little different, but gorgeous in its own way :)

  • It's kind of astounding how complicated hair got in the 60s. It was complicated before, but wow they stepped it up a notch. My mom says that my grandma put coke cans in her hair to get enough volume. So crazy!u

  • Oh my god, you're amazing! Had no idea people could actually do this to their own hair!!!

  • haha, thank you! ^_^

  • I love this look! So beautiful :) you totally suit it. I'd be a bit scared to do this myself as its not really my usual style but I wish I could get away with it! And your personality is just soooo cute, your not bigheaded at all and you come across really friendly :). Keep them coming!! :D

  • Late reply, but I just wanted to thank you for this sweet comment :))

  • I love this video, one of my favorites !!!

I got a feather headband like the one you have, I love it :) Mine is blue and green though. I will try to do this look with it :) Thanks for the great idea! -xoxo-

  • You look beautiful. :)

  • I just read some of the other comments. My question was answered (: amazing results as always!

  • Sorry about not getting to this, I am glad you found your answer though :)

  • I saw this woman with "the beehive" I had no idea that this is what it was called. The entire time I was thinking "Does she use bumpits? Did she do this herself? Did she get it done?" LOL I was actually about to ask but by the time I built up the courage I was unable to ask her lol I have really long hair...this might not be that easy for me. Should I just do more teasing? I now use the bumpits...so I don't have to tease that much but I may have to?

  • i have the bump it's but i am so clutsy and impaitent i have a hard time getting them to work for me

  • that would be a great DIY hairstyle for a bride :]

  • Thank you :)

  • lucky husband...

  • Does this work on super-long hair, too?

  • Yes, of course! Women often had long hair when wearing these hairstyles in the original era. You might have to go about it a little differently than I did... such as putting more hair *inside* the bun, or pinning the hair over the bun, and sweeping the leftover hair around the bun. It's definitely possible, but you'll need to experiment with your own hair to see what's best for you :)

  • Thank You :)

  • you must have a lot of patience and experience with this hairstyle.

i tried doing this last year and just gave up on it.

  • what an elegant top!!

  • Wow it's AWESOME.

    ' s luvly

Someday I will try it :-)

  • that's terrific! you really seem to know what you're doing

I know it wasn't intended but the style looks a lot like Audrey

    -Henry

  • Awe, thank you :)

  • hey aya....its really very nice...n you have a very sweet personality...totally subscribed,,:)..mwahh..genie ...from India....

  • Thank you ^_^

  • this looks really good, it looks just like an audrey hepburn hairstyle.

It's very neat, it must have taken you ages to get it just right!

  • That's part of the reason I get these videos out a little slow... I learn these hairstyle by trial and error and practicing in front of my mirror... so at times I have a lot of difficulty, lol :P Thank you, btw!!!

  • You should be hosting the fourth hour of "The Today Show." To hell with Kathie Lee!

  • HAHA :)

  • thankyou for posting this Aya, so glad i asked you to do this (:

  • No problem! I know I am terribly slow, but I really do strive to reach all of my requests ^_^

  • could you do a pricilla presley inspired behive please?

  • Hm, I've never seen it... I'll do a search :)

  • Another hit!! I always get the itch to to run home and start styling after watching your videos. You make it so easy and simple! And I love that you do all the styles on your own head rather than using a model - because we all know that it isn't easy trying to follow a tutorial done by a hair dresser on his model!

  • Thank you so much! ^_^

  • oh my goodness, Aya, this hairdo suits u so well. utterly gorgeous.

  • Awe, thank you! ^_^

  • Oh that is so cute! :)

  • Thanks! :D

  • ha.. I wanna see you playing your guitar more..

  • I never thought I was good enough to make a whole video on the subject alone... but I suppose I could always give it a shot :)

  • big butts booty are everywhere today an sheesh yeah I like big butts an all but my god a girl like you makes ALL of that disappear,..I guess thrift and the 40's 50 style just go together..

  • aha.... thank you..? =^.^=

  • geez a million people see you as the hair goddess...whoa

  • hey from tory

  • Why, hello ^.^

  • THANK YOU!! This looks so nice. Now I have such a great idea for my mom when she goes to work. Usually she doesn't know how to style her hair, so I do it for her. Lol. But it looks so professional and elegant! Great job and I love your dress. Take care <3

  • Oh that's wonderful! Thank you :D

  • I just got a bump it about a week ago, which I LOVE by the way... I got it at Walgreens. I don't know where you live, but if there's a Walgreens by where you live, you should definitely get your bump its from there! Seriously, I got it for just 10 bucks. Thought I'd pass along the information. :)

  • Oh thank you, that's wonderful advice!!! :D

  • You're welcome! And thank YOU for making all your great videos!

  • Thank you so much!

I have a queston: do you think it would be possiable to do with style with short hair, as in just above the shoulders?

  • Obviously the shorter it is, the more difficult it would be... you know that, but as long as you have enough hair to pull up into a pony tail, and even more to form into a bun or at least cover up the object underneath, you should have plenty of hair :)

  • wow...gorgeous!

  • subarashii!!

    thank u for the video..

  • iie, arigatou! ^_^

  • lol a funny video with your alive friend! Another fantastic result!

  • heehee! Thank you ^_^

  • this is my favorite!! i love your channel :-D

  • Thank you! :D

  • I got them from ebay ^_^ They are real, Chinese hair/clip in's... if you decide to look for something similar ;)

  • hahhahahahah!!!!!!! ITS ALIVE!! i really love your channel!!!

  • haha! Thank you, somehow it just looked like a living creature to me ^.^; Like a guinea pig or something.

  • lol yeah!

  • Comment removed

  • your hair looks a little dry, aya!

  • Maybe it's the lighting, because my hair is most definitely *not* dry ^.^;;;

  • So pretty :)

  • Thank you, love!

  • It does work with shorter hair, at least it did for me! My hair is about shoulder length, that is it barely grazes my shoulders, but yeah it worked! :) Really cute!

  • looks great Della

  • Haha, when you said "make a high ponytail and tease it to death" it reminded me of my beehive tutorial and how my friends made fun of the giant mass of teased hair on my head! lol

  • haha, but it turned out great and you made it look beautiful :)

  • I think yours is more elegant and authentic. But thanks anyway. You're right about having to go at it a few times to get the hair to cover up the filler just right. In my vid it looks like it only took 2 minutes, but I had to retry that part probably 6 times! I love the shape yours makes. As someone else said, very Audrey-esque. It would look great for a formal event if you wore a headband with rhinestones.

  • i really love your videos :) thanks for making them cos there very helpful

  • Very cute Aya!! I absolutely love the hairpiece you are wearing in the beginning!!! Looking forward to more in this series!

  • I love it, very Audrey Hepburn!!

  • Awesome! Thank you so much :)

  • very beautiful :)

  • Thank you ^_^

  • oki sooo first of alll that was amazing!!!! You make it look soo easy! I am sooo going to try this one out! second, i love your dress or of what I could see of your dress. and third have you ever considered being a model? you are sooooo gorgeous!!! thanks for the vid!

  • Awe, thank you so much :) It's a Target dress, that I thrifted recently :)

  • I wish I could try this look. IT's so classy, I love it . Once again, Aya, you have delighted me with your skills. I just love to see you do your hair, just because it´s pretty. Keep up the good work!!!

  • Is your hair too short? I'm sorry :( Thank you for watching and enjoying though!!!

  • Thankyou, i love the hairstyles do, it's very beautiful!

  • Thanks so much ^_^

  • Very classic and beautiful...the "It's alive!" bit made me giggle. =)

  • heehee, thank you (^3^)

  • That was fascinating to watch.

I've got very long hair, so this would probably be pretty difficult to do, but I look forward to seeing the other beehives you are planning to show.

I love the feather hair accessory!

  • Thank you so much!!! ^_^ You might have to go about it a tad differently, but really the longer the hair is, the better. That's because you have more to add volume and disguise the form underneath (even if you use your own hair, instead)... with hair as short as mine or shorter, you have to do a lot of teasing and fiddling to get the same effect :) (And during the time these hairstyles were worn, women often had very long hair... and so they were choosing hairstyles to complement the length)

  • you make everything look so easy!

haha. thank-you for this! i really wanted to know how to do a beehive. :)

god i wish i could go back in time.

  • Thank you, and ditto ^_^

  • Personally, I think yu get a better result using your 'homemade' rat than you would w/ the bumpit. I profane of the bumpit...let's boycot them and market 'It's Alive' homemade hair rats. LOL

  • hahaha, you're right! and thank you, thank you ^_^

  • So pretty! I have never thought this look was flattering for me but w/ the accessories, the entire dynamic changes. Brilliant! *adding to favorites*

  • i love this!

    its such an elegant hairstyle

  • Thank you! :)

  • i laughed so hard when you said "its alive" that i snorted

    i loooove the video..very helpful

  • haha, thank you! At least someone thought it was funny, my hubby thinks I am officially insane :)

  • I wonder if this will work with shorter hair..

  • It really depends on how short the hair is.... but as long as you have enough to cover the foundation, and enough to not fall down in the back, you should have plenty :)

  • This is so cute!

  • thanks so much for this! so helpful :)

  • Very very pretty! :D

  • thank you thank you thank youuu for making this! i'm DYING to try a beehive and you make it seem really easy! please continue this series i'm so excited to see what else youre gonna do! xoxox

  • Thank you for enjoying it!! Ok, I will work hard on this series! ^_^

  • i bet you would love to go back in time....

  • It a lot of ways, yes... though I suppose I would miss some of today's freedom's and conveniences :)

  • This looks very pretty. Great Job! You seem so into vintage. How did that start for you? I really like your choice in clothes too. good luck with the series!

  • I've always had unusual tastes, and coming from a very old fashioned family with eccentric, ultra feminine women... well, I don't think I had much of a chance :)

  • Please recomend stores for buying headbands like the ones you have! I want those! especially the peacock one!

  • The black headband is from a Dollar Store, and the Feather Fascinator is made with supplies from a craft store, that I will be putting in my Etsy shop within the next couple of days :)

  • i was wondering since my hair is very thick and dense, could i just slightly tease it instead of using extensions or the bump it? :)

  • Yes, actually in the video, I said that' "its a good alternative"... just tease the back section of hair as big as you are willing, and shape it into a bun the same way I used the extensions :)
