Naruto is sent 20 years into the past. Basically everyone is alive (and young obviously). I will say that Minato is indeed dead in the Shippuden though.

Well pay attention to the preview of Naruto 168 and the last 2 minutes. You may have to be a manga reader to understand what's going on though.
