Is it sad that I've memorized this entire sketch? Like...the entire sketch. I play it out accent, pauses, everything to my mom and anyone who will listen incessantly.
Hear what God of Israel YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH (Son and Father are ONE) saying to our generation by His chosen prophets: Trumpetcallofgodonline. com ; Letter called "Purify Your Faith, and Come to the Father as It is Written": EXCERPT: "Only in the Bible and through these very Letters, of which I have given to My prophet of the end of this age, shall you find Him and know Him."
I accidentally spoiled the ending for myself by googling brain surgery vs (what the punchline turned out to be - don't want to spoil it for anybody) to see if the brain surgery line is actually used in that way very often (I don't know why I bothered to google this) and this sketch came up top result. >.<
the best thing about this sketch is how obvious the joke is, when the lady mentions the space centre the audience pretty much know the final punch line of the sketch but when it happens it still remains funny
@whowantsabighug The value of a job is largely subjective, but not synonymous with it's complexity. Cleaners are essential to society, arguably more important than lawyers to our everyday way of life (just an example.) But that doesn't make cleaning more complex than law. Think of how many "rocket scientists" there are in the world compared to brain surgeons. A fractional amount. Trust me, aerospace engineering is a lot more complex than brain surgery, albeit not necessarily "more important".
@whowantsabighug Since we live on a planet that will one day run out of resources, revolving around a star that will one day expand into a red giant and boil the Earth's oceans and atmosphere, I'd argue that aerospace engineering or "rocket science" is more valuble in the long term.
this is made so much more funny by the fact that it was designed so that people would expect the punchline, by the wait which the audience has before the inevitable 'not exactly rocket science'. plus the sip of the drink after david says 'brain surgery?' just makes the ending so much better. classic sketch.
@TheM4A1Clan David Mitchell did specifically say 'Space' so you are right. I should mention though that ''Astronautical Engineering'' is a sub-division of Aerospace Engineering.
@TheM4A1Clan Rockets fly in the atmosphere though and believe me the atmospheric aspect is very important to the design of rockets. Since as a rocket scientist I know that.
careful,not a doctor,I'm a brain surgeon,big difference,BIIIIIIGGG difference...its very cummmplechchxxs....love the condescending reaction to accountant,"ohh,thats good"
We don't get paid very much. There's not a lot of work. But we do get two things - knowing that our work is out there, orbiting Mercury, and being able to say stuff like this.
The punchline is obvious but I think the real beauty of this sketch is the timing. Mitchell taking that sip before the punchline just absolutely kills it.
Everyone started laughing when Mitchell walks in and the lady asks if he had been kept late at the space centre. It is quite a predictable sketch, but it is hilarious though!
@joejoetaytay Umm. Ok. No worries. Just also post the witty bit of your reply that shoots me down though... least we all think you're actually a "Remtard on Free School Dinners" :)
Yes, though the term "rocket" is used a bit differently from traditional rockets. Imagine a nuclear reactor whose superheated exhaust is directed out of an exhaust nozzle, and by the law of reciprocal actions, the craft containing the reactor accelerates.
This latter half is why I use the term "rocket", as that is the essence of a rocket.
Hahaha, it's British so it's funny! Seriously, there are a bunch of Anglophiles in Denial on this site. It's the same joke over and over again. How is this different from Dane Cook saying "get the jelly, twat!"?
@CBGB42 It's the fact that you know it's coming and the way they deliver it that, in this case, it's funny. Though usually predictable sketches aren't that funny and this definitely one of Mitchell and Webb's weaker sketches.
It's the way Webb says "buh-RAAAINE surgery" that makes me laugh...
Why did you feel the need to make a comment like that, unprovoked?
Indeed, if the information in your profile is to be trusted, you would not only be above that but realize that we have more in common than you might think.
My apologies; I never can detect humor, and given the kind of things that are often said to me on YouTube, I have developed a tendency to assume the most hostile intent.
I love how people are alreayd laughing as the space-center is mentioned... knowing full wel where this is going :D this is one freaking awesome joke...
@MsVintaged I think they should have introduced him with the space-center line then had him ask the brain surgeon what he did, wait through the inevitable answer, then pan to him just sort of smiling to himself and say "really." no need to hit the audience over the head with the punch line.
@madwilliamflint actually there is. the whole sketch builds tension, even when webb is bragging, the audience begs for a good rebuke. it reaches boiling point with the mention of the 'space centre', and they know the audience is going to know what's coming, so they milk it wonderfully; 'i work mainly with rockets...' (tension increases) and then the tension is released at the end, without the on screen release it wouldn't feel 'complete'.
Ah, this is perfect comedy. Robert Webb's snobbish arrogance, David Mitchell's understated smugness, spot on timing and the subtle hint when the hostess greets David Mitchell.
This is one of the only shows (does Black Books have a laugh track?) that gets away with the laughter, even if it is live. The fact that you can hear that one guy who gets the joke before everyone else just as the rocket scientists enters is classic.
haha, about five seconds in I knew exactly what was going to happen but still literally cried with laughter for a period of time way longer than the entire clip itself. jesus christ...
Without doubt my favourite ever comedy sketch! Absolute classic! Just love how you can see exactly what's coming, yet it still cracks me up every time without fail!
@moonrockguy Not quite true. There are several American celebrities that can only be explained by botched brain surgery. Most of our politicians, too.
