  • I watch this over and over, and cant stop laughing. Brilliant.

  • Rocket science? Isn't really quantum mechanics now is it.

  • This could always really only go one way.

  • I'M A FOOKIN' ROCKET SCIENTIST.

  • @JoeMudd123 misfits :)

  • Lovely. One of the recommended videos after watching this is... Brain Surgery! Large Arachnoid Cyst! How delightful.

  • Brilliant :D

  • I think Mitchell's hair looks quite nice with that stlye/colour. When he gets older he should definitely go for it.

  • I love how Mitchells character is clearly just as much of a twat as Webbs and everyone finds his comment satisfying.

  • rocket surgery is way worse

  • Is it sad that I've memorized this entire sketch? Like...the entire sketch. I play it out accent, pauses, everything to my mom and anyone who will listen incessantly.

  • The timing of david mitchell when he comes in, is just to perfection.

  • I love how he obviously became a brain surgeon just so he could say this.

  • Right up there with 'Will this wind?'

  • It gets no better than this!

  • This is brilliant! ...but it's not exactly Nano/Quantam Engineering is it.

  • After three years and many viewings i can happily say that this is my favourite ever sketch ahead of Monty Pythons dead parrot

  • It's funny 'cause most doctors are assholes like that.

  • I was a brain surgeon like you, then I took a rocket to the knee.

  • @kilmindaro3 HARR HARR HARR SO FUNNEH

  • Not exactly rocket surgery though.

  • "Brain surgery, not exactly rocket science is it?"

I swear, the mark of a great comedian is when you see the punch line coming a mile away, but the delivery still makes you burst out laughing!

  • They have done some great sketches, and this is one of my favourites.

  • i watched this video because its for my Cybergamer achivement

  • Rocket science.... It's not exactly Rocket surgery is it?

  • Dude, brain surgery>>rocket science.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for uploading this BBC, it's one of my favourite sketches of theirs. Then again...it's not exactly brain surgery is it?

  • This is so funny! The pauses the brain surgeon makes before he boasts kill me xD

  • i totally predicted the rocket scientist. still hilarious

  • it's predictable but still you laugh!! ..now thats comedy

  • This is one of the most perfectly executed sketches I've ever seen. The timing, the intonations, the script itself. Sheer genius.

  • @StonySteveLemon I wouldnt go that far

  • @StonySteveLemon

It's a brilliant sketch... still......... It's not exactly brain surgery!

  • @StonySteveLemon I know it might seem impressive, but lets be honest. Writing sketches? Not exactly brain surgery, is it?

  • How do you know if there's a fighter pilot at your party?

    He'll tell you.

    (in before obvious reply)

  • I accidentally spoiled the ending for myself by googling brain surgery vs (what the punchline turned out to be - don't want to spoil it for anybody) to see if the brain surgery line is actually used in that way very often (I don't know why I bothered to google this) and this sketch came up top result. >.<

  • best punchline ever?

  • This one is really popular in my faculty in uni, we're Aerospace Engineers ;)

  • At the risk of sounding superfluous, I really do think this is one of the wittiest sketches ever.

  • Was ready to punch the screen hoping the brain surgeon twit would feel it , and then the rocket scientist comes in and saves the day

  • @skitzvitz well at least it's not rocket surgery :P

  • Heaven forbid I encountered such a twit. He'd get to "brain sur..." before he needed it.

  • It's not exactly Aperture Science...

  • rocket science is where the scientists find out stuff about space...i think

  • @HookahMan99 No, rocket science is the study and implementation of rocket physics, one of the most complex areas of physics.

  • the best thing about this sketch is how obvious the joke is, when the lady mentions the space centre the audience pretty much know the final punch line of the sketch but when it happens it still remains funny

  • @Borrisbeaner It's all in the delivery! ;)

  • @cjmkael true, very true. Still it's not exactly rocket science is it

  • The sipping of champagne makes this sketch even more brilliant than it already is.

  • even though you see it coming his delivery is outstanding and you still lol

  • "Ah Geoff, did they keep you late at the Space Centre?" is when you know what's going to happen. 5/9/2011 is when it's still funny...

  • Think thats the most obvious punchline in comedy history, but also one of the funniest, Brilliant!

  • You know what's coming but the timing of this sketch is perfect.

  • ahh brain surgery, not exactley roocket science is it

  • Isn't being a Brain Surgeon more important and valuable than a rocket scientist?

  • @whowantsabighug The value of a job is largely subjective, but not synonymous with it's complexity. Cleaners are essential to society, arguably more important than lawyers to our everyday way of life (just an example.) But that doesn't make cleaning more complex than law. Think of how many "rocket scientists" there are in the world compared to brain surgeons. A fractional amount. Trust me, aerospace engineering is a lot more complex than brain surgery, albeit not necessarily "more important".

  • @Soloxable I think the answer you're looking for is "Yes".

  • @whowantsabighug Since we live on a planet that will one day run out of resources, revolving around a star that will one day expand into a red giant and boil the Earth's oceans and atmosphere, I'd argue that aerospace engineering or "rocket science" is more valuble in the long term.

  • this is made so much more funny by the fact that it was designed so that people would expect the punchline, by the wait which the audience has before the inevitable 'not exactly rocket science'. plus the sip of the drink after david says 'brain surgery?' just makes the ending so much better. classic sketch.

  • I saw that one coming, but it was still hilarious.

  • Brain Surgery is probably more difficult than rocket science tbh.

  • ''Rocket Science'' is actually a misnomer. It is actually called ''Aeronautical Engineering''. ''Aerospace Engineering'' also works.

  • @McHugh55 No it's actually called "astronautical engineering," "aeronautical engineering" refers to vehicles capable of atmospheric flight.

  • @TheM4A1Clan David Mitchell did specifically say 'Space' so you are right. I should mention though that ''Astronautical Engineering'' is a sub-division of Aerospace Engineering.

  • @TheM4A1Clan Rockets fly in the atmosphere though and believe me the atmospheric aspect is very important to the design of rockets. Since as a rocket scientist I know that.

  • this is so funny

  • even though, or perhaps because, i saw that coming from way off, it was still BRILLIANT!

  • Rocket scientist eh? Not exactly theoretical physics is it.

  • @hom3slicez Theoretical physics? Not exactly crane driving, is it?

  • @hom3slicez Oh please.

  • too funny....

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • omg so funny

  • Well dont Brain surgeons need more calm hands and a eye for precision than just raw intelligence?

  • this makes me cry with laughter :(

  • thumbs up if you just ate pie

  • careful,not a doctor,I'm a brain surgeon,big difference,BIIIIIIGGG difference...its very cummmplechchxxs....love the condescending reaction to accountant,"ohh,thats good"

  • This is the best punchline of all time.

  • Why is this their most-viewed video?

    "Skin on cheese"

    "Vegetarians"

    "Lager Beer"

Are some much better sketches that deserve more views!

  • @TweekDash Homeopathic A & E 1.1 million views. Its ALL good.

  • We don't get paid very much. There's not a lot of work. But we do get two things - knowing that our work is out there, orbiting Mercury, and being able to say stuff like this.

  • Not exactly rocket surgery is it?

  • OH THAT'S GOOOOOD!!

  • @yoguy2k7 But it's not exactly brain surgery is it?

  • as soon as she mentions the space center I shit a brick every time

  • It just makes me cry with laughter - brilliantly simple and perfectly timed

  • The punchline is obvious but I think the real beauty of this sketch is the timing. Mitchell taking that sip before the punchline just absolutely kills it.

  • I waited for that punchline for the whole sketch. Simple but brilliant!

  • @TheOmegajuice

    Ye, it's simple yet brilliant...

... but it's hardly brain surgery, is it? ;)

  • Everyone started laughing when Mitchell walks in and the lady asks if he had been kept late at the space centre. It is quite a predictable sketch, but it is hilarious though!

  • @TWToxicity I think most of the fun is the anticipation of the punch line :p

  • @TWToxicity dont you understand thats the whole idea? you know its coming, its just how Mitchell is going to deliver the rocket science line.

  • @TWToxicity well, its not exactly brain surgery

  • Timing!

  • @joejoetaytay Umm. Ok. No worries. Just also post the witty bit of your reply that shoots me down though... least we all think you're actually a "Remtard on Free School Dinners" :)

  • saw it coming a long away but was still hilarious :D

  • Que Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory:

A rocket scientist! Well, it's not exactly theoretical physics....

    haha :]

  • 33 Brain Surgeons dislike Rocket Scientists

  • THIS IS SO FUNNY IM SO HAPPY NOW!!!!!!!!

  • this is so well done. Cringe then chuckle flat out

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  • 33 people are brain surgeons :D

  • this sketch is comedy gold, it doesnt get much better than this!

  • This one and the one about cum smelling trees are the funniest sketches ever.

  • Is that blonde lady Stevie from 'Miranda'?

  • @MintyInTheSky Yes :)

  • @KittyKattyYukiLvr Excellent ^^

  • BRILLIANT!

  • Yes, though the term "rocket" is used a bit differently from traditional rockets. Imagine a nuclear reactor whose superheated exhaust is directed out of an exhaust nozzle, and by the law of reciprocal actions, the craft containing the reactor accelerates.

This latter half is why I use the term "rocket", as that is the essence of a rocket.

  • mitchell and webb look was my faviourite sketch show ever :)

  • Hahaha, it's British so it's funny! Seriously, there are a bunch of Anglophiles in Denial on this site. It's the same joke over and over again. How is this different from Dane Cook saying "get the jelly, twat!"?

  • @CBGB42 It's the fact that you know it's coming and the way they deliver it that, in this case, it's funny. Though usually predictable sketches aren't that funny and this definitely one of Mitchell and Webb's weaker sketches.

It's the way Webb says "buh-RAAAINE surgery" that makes me laugh...

  • @CBGB42 It's different in that it's actually funny. Someone seems to have had a sense of humour failure.

  • Really well written comedy. Still... It's not exactly brain surgery.

  • 1:45

  • This is funny, even to those of us who DO work with rockets, nuclear in my case. ;)

  • @1RadicalOne Cleaning them doesn't count.

  • Why did you feel the need to make a comment like that, unprovoked?

Indeed, if the information in your profile is to be trusted, you would not only be above that but realize that we have more in common than you might think.

  • @1RadicalOne It's a joke, old bean

  • Oh.

My apologies; I never can detect humor, and given the kind of things that are often said to me on YouTube, I have developed a tendency to assume the most hostile intent.

  • I love how people are alreayd laughing as the space-center is mentioned... knowing full wel where this is going :D this is one freaking awesome joke...

  • @MsVintaged

    Exactly :)

Every comment is super-obvious, and utterly hilarious!

  • @MsVintaged I think they should have introduced him with the space-center line then had him ask the brain surgeon what he did, wait through the inevitable answer, then pan to him just sort of smiling to himself and say "really." no need to hit the audience over the head with the punch line.

  • @madwilliamflint actually there is. the whole sketch builds tension, even when webb is bragging, the audience begs for a good rebuke. it reaches boiling point with the mention of the 'space centre', and they know the audience is going to know what's coming, so they milk it wonderfully; 'i work mainly with rockets...' (tension increases) and then the tension is released at the end, without the on screen release it wouldn't feel 'complete'.

  • I love how he says "complex"

  • i know it's coming.

and everytime i still laugh at "not exactly rocket science"

    PURE GENIUS!

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!

  • 31 people are ONLY doctors.

  • Ah, this is perfect comedy. Robert Webb's snobbish arrogance, David Mitchell's understated smugness, spot on timing and the subtle hint when the hostess greets David Mitchell.

  • This is one of the only shows (does Black Books have a laugh track?) that gets away with the laughter, even if it is live. The fact that you can hear that one guy who gets the joke before everyone else just as the rocket scientists enters is classic.

  • @crushy3 nope

  • I have not laughed at a show other than Archer in AGES

  • Bloody brilliant this, I could watch it for hours.

    :D

  • "[...] [T]he other IS brain-surgery" — lol.

  • I LOVE how much of a prick this guy is! lmao

  • Can I just marry this? xD

  • Anyone else noticing this is apparently a song by the 'Brain Surgeons', as YT so kindly pointed out to me?

YouTube, I could simply tell you you're wrong... but it's not exactly rocket science...

  • @madbowlerV2 cool story, bro,

  • 31 people are brain surgeons.

  • @RosemaryAmey 31?

  • @RosemaryAmey

They're not exactly rocket scientists, are they?

  • haha, about five seconds in I knew exactly what was going to happen but still literally cried with laughter for a period of time way longer than the entire clip itself. jesus christ...

  • Without doubt my favourite ever comedy sketch! Absolute classic! Just love how you can see exactly what's coming, yet it still cracks me up every time without fail!

  • Comment removed

  • Wonderful comedic timing. I laugh every time I see it.

  • absolutely perfect. Loved the punchline!

  • 31 people are not exactly rocket scientists.

  • Which is harder, brain surgery or rocket science?

  • @Jonstern1983 Rocket Science...Brain surgeons bury their mistakes, rocket scientists get the public shame of everyone seeing theirs on TV

  • @moonrockguy That is certainly more pressure.

  • @moonrockguy Not quite true. There are several American celebrities that can only be explained by botched brain surgery. Most of our politicians, too.

  • Of course, I had to send this to my friend at NASA. I'm happy to say that it's making the rounds of the rocket scientists. :)

  • This is possibly the funniest sketch ever written. What's amazing is how it was only written so recently - it's such a beautifully obvious joke!

  • I was literally miming to my computer screen "OWNED! OWNED!" to Robert, XD;

  • 1:54

  • Rocket surgery? not exactly brain science...

  • 31 brain surgeons just met rocket scientists.

  • Exactly, that's why most of these were done in front of a\ live studio audience.

    Not canned laughter.

  • Brain Surgery, pretty impressive

Still, its not exactly SLEEPING WITH JORDANS MOM

  • predictable but still great

  • You could spot the punch line coming at a mile away but still LMAO

  • One of Mitchel & Webbs best gags... a real classic.

Right up there in the comedy goldosphere, along with the sausage roll rant, and Watch The Football.

  • The most obvious punchline ever. But i cannot stop myself laughing.

  • @fattymattyweasel it's all about the timing! delivered perfectly! HA!

  • @fattymattyweasel Yeah, I saw it coming the moment David Mitchell walked in the room. Still made me chuckle though.

  • Perfect timing.

  • That's like the longest setup for a joke I've ever seen. Wait for it... wait for it... LOL!!!

  • You know its coming, and its still funny...lol.

  • this is hillarious

  • you could so see it coming, but it was still hilarious. :D gotta love those two.

  • Hmmm, 30 people must be brain surgeons.

  • Rocket science? Brain surgery? Not exactly art history is it?

  • This video is a lesson in comedic timing.

  • I must have watched this a hundred times and it still makes me laugh every time. It completely forgoes the usual trick of confounding expectation and is even funnier for it.

David's delivery of the punchline is a textbook piece of comic timing

  • Even though you see the punchline coming from a mile away, it's still hilarious :)
