  • From someone who would know...was Buddy Rich really THAT much of a jerk?

  • Can someone please help me verify something?? Is that a very young Eric Miyashiro on trumpet? It sure does look (and sound) like him. Never seen this footage before, so it is hard for me to nail down.

  • @frenchpet you're a an idiot and as for all the 21 bitches that liked his comment smoke a dick!

  • eat your heart out Kenny G.

  • I saw BR in concert in the late 70's and he was a complete shithead to his band. Just and complete f*&k wad. He played like nobody but as a person... didn't make the cut...

  • OMG I love this song!

  • as a sax player, and huge fan of steve marcus and buddy's cannon of work, thanks for the link.

  • @frenchpet u r a cunt

  • @frenchpet Hes kind of dead...

  • @ebyros travis did not die you fucking idiot he can kick this old mans ass btw

  • @4against1 You obviously don't know anything about drums if you think that.

  • @4against1 Sadly that wouldnt be both physically and drumistically, Buddy had the greatest drummer thing going since before travis was born. He is also a black belt just saying, he is the original ninja drummer.

  • @frenchpet Buddy Rich > Travis Barker

  • @Horrorlink fucking stupid

  • @eddie9454 obviously you have no ideas about drums. buddy rich is a technically monster, while barker is playing the same shitty rockbeat over and over again. he can never reach buddys level, even in his primetime. and btw buddy performed with musical legends like charlie parker, dizzy gillespie, count basie, miles davis, et cetera. these guys created music which formed the todays music, while barker still rots in Blink 182. he is so overrated...

  • @Horrorlink hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahah sorry man theres been a conuftion in here hahaha i thought the " > " on your comment was like a buddy rich is like travis pussy barker... but no, i know buddy is way better than that fucking chimpance Barker lol

  • @eddie9454 ah no problem :D whatever, it feels good to say my opinion out loud about barker...

  • @Horrorlink THANK YOU!

  • @Horrorlink : i couldn't of said it better "jykds" the late legendary 4EVeR remembered Mr. (King of Drums) Buddy Rich was w/o a doubt a master technician of style on his most famous Slingerland Drums...nuff said, cheers! x0]

  • @tornmask1 oops! my comment was for "@Horrorlink" but thank u sooo very much "jykds" for posting this Buddy Rich renditions of Weather Report's "Birdland" cheers! x0]

  • Can't listen to a cover version of a jazz song? That cuts against the whole ethos of jazz as the freedom music for jamming.

  • why do basses always seem higher than the rest of the tuning(,Brass, reeds, )maybe because they tune to electronic gismos.

  • 1:42 I just realized: "THAT'S A DAMN SINGLE-STROKE ROLL?!"

  • 1:47 JEALOUSY

  • can anyone tell me the trumpet sections names?

  • thats not a clarinet....it's a sax

  • Sorry, I can't listen it when you have the weather report album with Jaco and Joe Zawinul. This just sounds pretty bad! I don't know why they bothered.

  • @gigwalnutz1

Cos this is timeless unlike WP who just sound like they are straight out of the 70s

  • @gigwalnutz1

Cos this is timeless unlike WP who just sound like they are straight out of the 70s to the poit of being kitsch

  • @JCHM13 I think Buddy Rich's version sounds like it was composed in the 60s and right on the Johnny Carson show to boot! It's really the other way around. WR wrote the tune, THEY are timeless. Everyone else who tries to copy the original, date themselves, because they didn't have the vision to write the material in the first place!

  • who else saw Frank Zappa @ 0:33?

  • Q: why would i want to hear birdland without jaco pastorius on bass? A: because buddy rich is on drums.

  • Buddy is like 60 or 70 here haha and he can play ten times better than most drummers today...GOD

  • this music is pure class!!

  • yummy :)

  • @JoeJacari

Travis Barker is an inked up Jackass who can only only loud and simple beats, yet he imprersses people because they think he's "cool."

He SUCKS, and why are you even on a Buddy Rich video if you can't respect Buddy??

Travis Barker couldnt even hold Buddy's sticks, end of story.

  • that asian dude has nothing on maynard lol.

  • @Witch1993 that asian dude was in maynard's band lol

  • @taquitoisaacs

Where you go when you want to learn from the best is Travis Barker, my son. Your sickness comes from your overbearing ego. Full of self-importance, you puff up like an Adder Fish; however, Barker is well respected and you are merely an obscure drummer dreaming of schemes unrealized.

Realize this: you are somebody, even if you are not famous nor a virtuoso like Travis Barker & friends. Love & forgive yourself and have humility. Deep, deep humility, my child.

    Real.

  • @JoeJacari Ask that pathetic guy to play some jazz or blues you'll see...

  • So many pedophiles

  • I love this video's description. "From the 80's," as though it's apologizing for the mustaches.

  • so you really think a guy watching a buddy rich video doesn't know what a soprano saxophone looks like?!?

  • @LazyBastard69 You made the comment, not me. Calling me a moron doesn't help your credibility, either.

  • @GeorgeBurrito Having mexican food in your name doesn't make your any more credible than me.

  • @LazyBastard69 Now you're just reaching. Listen up, the fact of the matter is that you made a comment that was false and I corrected you. Trying to dig your way out of a hole of error by insulting me makes you look really stupid and immature.

  • @GeorgeBurrito go shove a burrito up your anus. everyone knows that a soprano saxophone doesn't look like a fuckin golden clarinet!

  • @LazyBastard69 You're hilarious! I'm sure NOW everyone knows that it's a soprano saxophone! Until I corrected you, I'm sure you were scratching your head at the spectacle of a golden clarinet.

  • @GeorgeBurrito I'm sure the old fart behind the drumkit kann masturbate very fast.

  • @LazyBastard69 That's wonderful, but you're still an idiot.

  • @GeorgeBurrito i love you too :-*

  • @GeorgeBurrito and very hard. yes very hard indeed.

  • damn that's a badass clarinet

  • @LazyBastard69 It's called a Soprano Saxophone.

  • @GeorgeBurrito you're called a moron

  • @LazyBastard69 Look it up.

  • The trombone player at :27 is my old high school friend Jim Martin, from St. Louis. Jim teaches now at Webster University and plays most of the shows that come into town. Greg Gisbert is playing second trumpet and now plays in a number of top bands, including the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra out of NYC. He's one of my favorite players.

  • @hobes9 amen to that

  • let me say this once and for all, TRAVIS BARKER IS NOT THAT GOOD, hes a trashy drummer with hardly any technique at all

  • There are people at my community college jazz band that are better than barker. You can find his skill in most places, he's nothing special he just does remixes and a couple of cool sounding beats and you kiddos eat it up. Dumb little baby buffalo.

  • 1:42 .... and people say travis barker plays fast

  • Buddy rich has the best talent of any drummer and blows travis barker away!!!!!!!

  • @angel1969ist john bonham.

  • I had the joy of seeing the great man play live ........ stop insulting him unless you actually saw him play...... OMG incredible

  • @TheSaxplaya1

What's the matter at the end of this video? Rich seemed angry that people weren't going crazy for his '80s schmaltz drums...Even the talk host gave a sort of disinterested look at Rich.

Rich storms off because people aren't screaming and going crazy for his average drums?

This was a prophecy of something changing in the air of America. They were beginning to intuit the coming of age of a new babe who was just born that would resurrect drums for the future: Travis Barker.

  • @JoeJacari Buddy Rich is a legend and a great. Barker is okay at rock. If you wanna talk rock style playing just go watch Mike Portnoy's solo's and you'll think barker is not even a man, just a little baby buffalo.

  • Fresh water bats and austerity measures. Bad grimmaces and odd, hunched body postures. Anger at the band and cursing out the frizzled hair pieces like a spoiled brat.

Then Travis Barker came on the scene and changed drums forever.

When Travis hits the stage and his drum set flips upside down and he jams, you can hear the screams of the crowd and see the frenzy and tears in the eyes of adoring young chicks.

This is the power of TB, this is Travis Barker unleashed.

    Who needs 1980s schmaltz?

  • let's see Travis Barker do triples over doubles with a 9/8 drum beat

  • @OmgItsGaryBusey i can do that and im 16...

  • we're talking about Travis Barker

what difference do you make about the conversation

  • @OmgItsGaryBusey just the difference that you are an ignorent fool.

  • you really have no idea what you're saying at all

  • @OmgItsGaryBusey im pretty sure i do...

  • not really

i'm gonna go drink booze now because my life is a twisting black pit of despair

  • @JoeJacari you must be the biggest sagiest annoying little cunt this world has ever seen do dis of buddy rich like that

  • @JoeJacari You make me sick. Are you a musician at all? Any reasonably informed musician would know that Travis Barker is an absolute fool and pathetic musician, at the best. He has little to no talent, my student, who is 12 and has been playing drums for 3 months has more talent than Barker. The crowd that "screams for Barker," is a bunch of fools, this is easily established by looking at the fact that they can conjure enjoyment out of "moshing."

  • @JoeJacari Also, they cheer for him because he is a "rebel" like them, and that he's upside down, not because they're impressed with his musicianship.

  • Is this the Buddy Rich all white band lol

  • The trombonist in the middle at 1:30 looks like Dave Weckl... HAHAHAHA!!

  • I love how the bass player isn't nearly as good as Jaco was.

  • @DNBJerk

    your comment cracked me up.

He is not trying to be Jaco, he doesn't need to play like Jaco, yet this piece is asking for a bad ass bassplayer like Jaco.

I feel bad for this guy, though.

  • @futureforecast Yeah, I mean it's a tough act to follow. Clearly this version is 'dumbed down' a little on the bass. It works though.

  • worst song i've ever heard from buddy, worst interpretation of birdland i've ever heard, worst tempo for birdland i've ever heard, worst phrasing possible for the horns.

    love buddy hate this

  • I remember buddy was in Ronnies at the time of this & was talking how he loved T.Wogan! NOT. It went something like : Did you see the Wogan show...Why? '...,well i can understand when you got greats like Pat Boone! what would you want with a band like mine,We went in there a played one tune,I did'nt bother him & he didnt bother me & we got the hell out of there!

  • Anybody who actually thinks travis barker is anything of a special drummer really needs to listen to some more music. try jazz, or classic rock, or metal, or death metal, i can garantee you that if u step into death metal for like five minutes on youtube you will find many drummers who well surpass the likes of mr. barker.

  • Haha, Eric was so young back then!

  • i didnt know miyashiro played with buddy rich!

  • @AaRoN177655 he joined about a year, maybe a bit longer before Buddy passed.

  • If it gets better than this....please show me where!!!!! The Master at work with his boys!!!!!!!! RIP, Buddy!

  • The date of this recording is 1986 Buddy's last U.K. tour & a year before the Master left us. Buddy's reaction to the audience at the end of this chart says it all!!!...I believe Wogan chose to chat with Pat Boone instead of Buddy which went down like a lead bass drum with B.R.!!...At least Parkinson showed him some respect!!

  • I remember watching this on Wogan bbc he played this number then wogan went to his guests, and I thought what the fuck why not have a chat with Mr Drums (buddy) instead he had somebodyelse,MENTAL or what, always thought wogan was a tosser.

  • @MrJasonmc67

i like Buddy's "fuck you all" reaction as the video ended. he did not look pleased about the crowd. and that was one hell of a performance if i do say so myself.

  • @cadillacdude1975

Buddy could play on the beat...under the beat...next to the beat....us who love playing the drums are very lucky to have had him in our lives. But he is a standard I don't think anyone can ever meet thank god.

  • What's the date on this? Thanks for a reply-Bill S.

  • Those are not press roll's idiot, they are single strokes, 32nd's to be exact!

  • arent they 16ths?

  • Miyashiro is a beast!

  • had to do this song in band.......I hate this song! But I love buddy rich's playing

  • Wow! this cooks. sax man rips! And Buddy should have played more fusion.

    Great!!!!!!!!!!I

    Is this on a cd?

  • God bless you Buddy and Steve Marcus too - wherever your spirits may be.

  • I was watching this, and I was like, damn thats a badass clarinet

a few minutes later I was like, Damn, I'm stupid as hell

  • yea its a suprano sax

  • its ok man I did the same

  • @Thebestmang haha it happens to the best of us

  • @Thebestmang saprano sax bro.

  • @holdernash do you actually think I don't know that? Why else would I say I'm stupid as hell

even then what do you have to gain by calling me out

  • Female lead trumpet?!

  • Nope, the legendary Eric Miyashiro.

    rockin that bowl cut.

  • My dad met Buddy once on his tour bus when he came to Tucson in the 80's. He's truly amazing...RIP

  • Hell yea Weather Report. I'll bet Alex Acuna, not to mention Joe Zawinul crapped himself. One of the few times I've heard Buddy play a straight groove. Awesome!

  • Sweet!

  • Wow! What a brilliant version of this classic! Love that arrangement and Buddy is on fire like always! Zawinul must have been proud of that version :)

  • in g major

  • That soprano sax solo!!! ooo wee

  • THE BEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSTTT BUDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a song! I love you Buddy ! GOD keep you with HIM

  • 5:23-5:27 he must of been boosted on adrenaline.

  • when i first started playing the drum set, one of the first drummers i was told about was buddy rich, now he is on my top list of drummers.

  • really really good bassist! does anyone know his name? he's playing some great stuff here

  • I Love the back beat Buddy Lays down at 2:13. It drives the song

  • Comment removed

  • buddy rich that plays funky stuffs......Oh my god he will be a legend forever

  • no one will ever touch the RAW talent that Buddy had. the problem with kids today is there might be someone out there with the gift that buddy had, but poor choices and shitty parenting and being an overall failure wont ever let that light shine.

R.I.P. Traps. the best of the best.

  • Oh. God. Get off your soap box, dude. We should all be so perfect like you that our lives revolve around whether or not we fit into your freakin' "box."

Heaven help the kid(s) who runs into your perfect world. Get a grip.

  • Why does Travis Barker's name seem to crop up in the comments for every drum piece. I didn't drum for nearly 40 years and could play respectable rock and pop the minute I sat behind them again. It's taken me a very long time to scratch the surface with this kind of material. It is much, much harder to play. Travis Barker is insignificant compared with just about any big band drummer, not to mention the king of drummers - BR. No one has ever come close.

  • thats an easy one to answer.. the reason why travis barker is always brought up in drum piece's is because the majority of people don't know of any other drummers, and they refuse to venture out on their own and discover all the wonderful musicians(past or present) that have made a great contribution to the music world without playing in some short lived pop band. Sadly, for most people it is easier to agree with the majority's liking than to agree within themselves...I hope that made sense.lol

  • not to say that buddy rich isn't amazing, but its not like knowing buddy rich is really venturing out in the drumming world, he's probably one of if not THE most well known drummer ever.

  • that is true. he is very well known, but I think what I posted before stands true. especially for younger people. for instance, when your in highschool, its easier to just agree with what everybody else in what's considered good music than it is to say "hey I think pat metheny is a great jazz musician" especially when trying to fit in.

  • I'm in highschool.

  • and if you told your friends or say the hottest girl in school that your favorite band was the buddy rich big band, they would probably look at you like a loser. but if you say "travis barker" your cool and fit in better..

  • I'm in high school and your completely right, the thing is, i dont care, i simply dont care about what people say haha they like terrible, horrible music and im proud to say that I love classic rock and jazz. People say im wird haha but i dont care, i have a group of friends who like my music too.

  • i agree with piperpilot on that, even though travis barker sucks nads lol

  • no offense or anything.lol I'm just trying to get the point across..

  • no, because people like to think they are powerful and can generate extreme reactions, so they say a statement they don't agree with for fun

  • what? I agree with what I said...I believe its more socially acceptable to listen to top 40 than to listen to this..and thats what pisses me off..

  • then let conformity piss you off. just dont bitch about it

  • go fuck yourself......how about that.

  • maybe you found a way to do it, but the rest of us have lives. how about that?

  • having a life doesnt change the fact that I'm right.. and you have to admit that Im right. thats why you dont hear jazz and big band jazz on the top forty..

  • yeah well you don't hear top 40 stuff at respected colleges where proffessional musicians who can ACTUALLY play there instruments well are in charge. top 40 was good up until about 10 years ago. now it's repetitive and the lyrics are extremely pretencious

  • lol this is true. The only unfortunate part is the fact that, in general, what you here on the fm radio in you car, will never stray outside of "pop". it kinda sucks, but then again, there's always satellite radio. :)

  • I remember hearing Buddy and band live ... I don't know that that sound impact and quality of musicianship can be captured any other way than live.

  • I agree 100%

  • that's the problem. it's the easy-listening convenience of pop music that makes it POPULAR

  • Right on Sam, but at least there are people like us keeping the flame alive..

    63Brummie

  • I wouldn't doubt it. The audio quality of this tape is shit.

  • geez, it's not THAT bad of quality, i've hard a lot worse.

  • Well-said fillins. The power of Buddys groove was awesome!! It was like experiencing a Bomb blast so visceral!!

    OMG!

  • the closet I've seen is a cat named Chad Rager. There's a couple of clips of a show I attended and I don't believe it was set up to record as none of the clips sounded as good as it was.

His band is called the Chad Rager Groove and it also had a smokin' sax player and keyboard player too!

  • @turnitback BECAUSE THEY ARE FUCKING TROLLS YOU IDIOT! THEY TROLL EVERY FUCKIN DRUM VIDEO ON THE INTERNET! THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF TROLLS. LEARN TO IGNORE THEM AND DONT GIVE THEM SO MUCH ATTENTION. All caps ftw. L2 not feed into trolls.

  • @turnitback I completely understand where ur coming from I love BR. but just because a certain style is easy doesnt mean the sound can be duplicated i promise you playin what TB plays is NOT easy at all it takes time, relentless practice and knowledge of your craft and that is what both travis and buddy have in common.

  • @turnitback ....ppl only see Travis Barker the rock/pop drummer but he can actually play dam good i even dare say GREAT jazz. dont compare drummers by style compare them by thier study of thier craft. love him or hate Travis is one of the best drummers of this generation (if youre talking technique, feel, groove, and all the components that make a great drummer). i do agree too many ppl just jump on the barker wagon w/o just cuz hes Travis Barker and he's "cool" wat ever that means.
