I want to train my two youngest cats to do this. They already will jump up onto things at the click of fingers for no other reward than petting and attention. They are very willing to please. One of our older cats has the personality for it too, she's a puppy cat and will follow you everywhere, but she's got no balance or grace.
This is pretty good for a cat. At least this is headed in a somewhat positive direction. Cats are awesome and very intelligent. One day cat agility will work. Please check out my cats trick video on my page if you get a chance
It's not exactly trained to do anything. I'm sure cats can be trained to do a course, I've seen them trained to do amazing things. If mice and dogs can be trained to do an entire agility by memorization and cues, then surely someone can train their cat to actually do the course, not just chase a toy. THAT I would like to see.
Play with your cat at home all you want, but don't parade them in front of other people for prizes, cash and your own sense of sick pride. You people and the cat cam make me sick. Same type of people who flaunt their children on commercials and talent shows.
Cats aren't stupid, people that try to train cats to run obstacles are stupid. This is not a natural thing for a cat to desire. Unlike dogs, whom often enjoy training and competing with their trainers, cats only follow the "wand" you make them chase. (Most likely containing cat nip). However regardless of if it contains cat nip or not, cats are not made for stupid tricks you make them do to impress your friends or feel good about yourself. .
The monks whose temples were 'infested' by stray cats somewhat solved their problem by including them. They trained the cats to do tricks as well as stay out of the way or be involved. I'm sure it is not impossible, training is learning and natural to most all species. People just have to be patient and work for it, more so with cats.
My cat does this but she does it for treats. Shes not blindly jumping and going through things. She jumping because she wants the reward at the end. I think it's better to do it this way because then the animal has a choice. Jump and get treat or don't jump and don't get treat. Lol.
Dogs mostly have drive to do the course when their competing, cats are just chasing feathers and not actually looking at what they are doing. So when their doing courses its not really showing their ability and instincts of what they do in the wild.
That course doesn't even begin to test a bengal cat's agility.
I bet that's why it stopped in the middle of that tunnel.
"That's it? I'm just supposed to run through these tunnels? Not jump over them?"
To test its agility, it should jump between a series of platforms 10 feet apart at different heights up to 10 feet, after the cat gets to the top platform there should be an iron bar, after it walks across the iron bar it should jump through a hole in the ceiling and disappear.
@pillowhuggertodamax cats and dogs are both animals cats are quieter than dogs and lazier than dogs but they are all the same in different ways ! so if I were you I would stop and think before I say anything!
I seen a comment on one of the cat agility videos, saying it's stupid because they follow the toy... Pms, dogs follow the treat, and cats aren't that stupid, like dogs, they can learn to do tricks, example; sit, fetch, lie down etc.. Just like a dog :)
To everyone who`s been dissing me. yeah im talking to you katluff and jellybean069. look, im sorry, i wuz havin a bad day, im very defensive about dogs. and katluff, im in SEVENTH grade. smart one... anyway im not extremely fond of cats and im sorry ok? could i bee forgived instead of coming on here as being dissed?
I pity the dogs of all the people who have posted here, because clearly you've lost sight of the fact that agility, not matter what species is running the course, is first and foremost all about having FUN. That cat sure as heck looks like he's having fun to me.
Either way, since apparently we have a big ol' meeting of The Cat Whispers going on here, surely some of you "He's just chasing the stick!" people would like to post your videos of your cat doing it just like a dog would?
@huskymusher97 You need to stop surfing through Youtube when you fifth grade teacher is giving a lecture at the front of the room.
"Dogs were bred to jump" might be one of the most vague, inaccurate things I've ever heard. There are several hundred different breeds of dogs, all bred for different things, and none of those things are simply "for jumping." Also amazingly funny because even a fat, lazy tom cat can jump higher, farther, and faster than any dog could.
Bnegals hold all the cat agility recors. How did you ger your Bengal to slow down. Mine is 15 lbs, eats 3 cans of cat food a day, and still looks like he is emaciated. I don't think he ever sleeps All he does is jump from one high point in the apartment to another. Sometimes he flies over our heads....
I don't agree with Theytookourjerbs, cats are not unloyal, there as kind as dogs, just because they can't do agility like dogs it doesn't mean that their unloyal.
Cats are very loyal and loving...If you treat them right they will get VERY attached to their owner. At least mine have. I have 2 lovely female cats and thinking about getting a third. They are perfect pets and companions. And it's not necessarily that they can't do agility, they just wont if they don't feel like it at the moment.Cats are smart and very independent animals after all.You have to give them enough incentive to do it ; )
I deffo don't agree with pillowhuggertodamax, I think cats as just as good as dogs, hamsters and mice, only some cats are show cats, they are independent, there isn't any problem with cats not being like dogs, they are how they are.
Cats are generally a lot more intelligent, independent and facinating than dogs! They are just as or more likely much MORE intelligent than dogs. And it's definitely not that they can't do something like agility, obviously they can easily. It's that they rather WONT unless they REALLY want to do it and get good treats. You can make a dog do bacially anything, they have NO independent thought or behaviour at all and an annoying desire to impress. That's just boring.I'm a cat person all the way : )
@huskymusher97 "Wasn't doing it of his own free will?" What, you think some invisible force was pushing that cat through the course? Goodness, you're really a moron, aren't you?
@huskymusher97 Um wrong. Cats are not "dumb" Cats are statistically smarter than dogs. They are much more stubborn. Also cats and dogs are 2 completely different breeds so naturally they are going to go about the course differently k?
Oh and just for the record.. Dogs are the ones doing it for food
A cats motivation is play. Seruislly stop nagging on cats. Grow up
@CuteGGproductions Um yeah HI!! i am a person too, dont take your bad day out on me!! that was 4 MONTHS AGO. get over it. and you oviously didnt see the APOLOGY i left also. and if you think dogs only do it for food maybe you should look into agility trials more often, and if you dont even watch "Moses agility: Fake trial" He does agility w/o food! And since you cant read go back to school, learn how to read, and if you think i need to grow up, look at what you wrote and l@@k my last post
@huskymusher97 yeah..train them to be...i like independent thinkers...not ones whom are taught what to do..and cats are statisticallly smarter btw....whow this is a year old..ha to me
This cat cannot "run the agility course just like dogs." It's chasing a lure, not interacting with the handler or responding to commands and hand signals.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I completely agree, all it's doing is following that lure. =/ It isn't responding to commands given. Anybody can drag a stick along the ground and have a cat chase it, that doesn't require effort. =P
No one is making any claims that this is a dog. This is the way cats do it. So they do it different that a dog. Does that make any difference? It is still fun to watch them do it.
How do you define smart? Is someone blindly following orders smart? It's a technicality, but try thinking of the cat as easily trainable and more obedient than other cats, not smarter. My own cat doesn't follow directions, but he does know how to change the channels on my tv, to my annoyance (and he does prefer some over others) wheras my dog can do agility, but genuinely thinks his balls are chewing gum. It evens up.
yes I read that wrong too, lol...what she means is he thinks his TOY balls are for chewing, like gum ...the other option would be horrendously painful.
