@22meganblue You think it's barbaric because you haven't been exposed to the realities of slaughterhouses. Like cows and pigs, seals have their skull fractured causing death or unconsciousness.

The EU commissioned Dec 2007 EFSA report deemed hakapiks efficient because young seals have thin skulls, and 90% of the seals hunted in Canada are 3 weeks to 3 months of age. The odds of missing with a hakapik are low compared to rifles, which can simply wound an animal. One hit usually does the job.

@canucktunes as a matter of fact, I have been to slaughterhouses, watched the videos, seen the horror there. i belong to PETA and GreenPeace and have had my fair share of unpleasant visuals on matters of the human race. That's fantastic that young seals have thin skulls and so its no big deal to you for us to smash their skulls. My reason against this is these babies are killed only for their fur that mostly the super rich buy. Their meat is not harvested, nor are any other usable body parts.

@22meganblue Actually, seal meat is consumed in the Atlantic provinces, Nunavut and Quebec. And Omega 3 supplements are derived from seal fat. But of course any attempt to fully harvest and distribute seal meat and fat has been met with protests and propaganda. The protest group have recently stated they would attempt to hinder the sale of seal meat and oil to China, so they're obviously afraid of loosing that particular peace of propaganda.

@22meganblue Have you ever wondered why the protest groups have not provided alternative killing methods ? The EFSA was not provided with alternatives to review for their December 2007 report, just additional procedures that would be performed after the use of rifles or hakapiks, some of which are in practice in Canada.

If these groups suggested an alternative method many people would stop sending donations to them, interpreting this suggestion as supportive of the hunt.
