@Superiorer you ca still see a rocket launch as far as i know its just that keeping a shuttle in shape in order for it to launch is a tremendous amount of money and to add maintaning it is a lot of money piling up. Now NASA will be launching rockets that break up upon re-entry and entering the atmosphere so aas to cut maintaning costs ;)
i was working in channelview tx one night at lyondale and the operators came outside and just started looking into the night sky i join them and said what yawl up to and one said see that tiny star keep your eye on it. well seconds later it flamed up an shot over our heads moving so fast i damn near wet myself. the plant was a gas plant lol. i feel in love with them things that night
why weren't the Shuttles fitted or originally designed with an ejectable flight deck Module that would be able to blast away from the rest of the Orbiter if disaster struck on Acsent, Descent or while in Space ? The crew would be Safe no matter what. An old style heat shiekld could have been built onto and under the Ejectable Module .
A Heat Shield like what was on Apollo should have been applied anyway as a Redundancy onto the underneath of the shuttle. So no matter what the Crew is safe .
This situation is very controversial. I think the Mach 18 on launch is too fast to eject from even in a pod, it could hit the wings etc as the pod could no move out of the way quick enough. NASA have been posed these question in the past about human life over cost in dollars, and the long and the short of it is NASA don't think it worth while fitting them. They would have done it before now if it were something they thought would be a viable option. I agree save the lives not the shuttle.
@MetusModus Could the shuttle br redesigned as a series of Modular units in that in case an Ejectable Crew Module containing the Astronauts had to be jettisoned then the Vertical Stabilizer and OMS Pods would eject as inpedendent podsincluding the wings so that the crew would be safe. The OMS Pods and Vertical Stab since they are more compact would be salvageable and retrievable. if the Main engines could eject then the shuttle would be lighter and be able to return 2 Earth with less speed.
@Roadracer987654321 Main engines ejected? That's a bit far fetched mate, that's an engineering nightmare, maybe years ahead but that is not going to happen this decade. Even if yu could the shuttle would crash land, irreperable damage, The multi pods leaves a weak point in the cockpit, on re entry the shuttle has to structurally sound as a pound, with zero fault lines. Wings MUST be sound. Nice idea though. The last bit is somewhat strange "shuttle would be lighter?" It is travelling Mach 18
The shuttle could have been redesigned with a Docking Collar built into the Fuselage in front of the Cargo hold. The crew deck could have been built into a detachable module and placed in the Cargo hold.Shuttle Generation 2 could and would have been more multi purpose and easier to build. The Next Generation Shuttle would have been , lighter, more maneuverable, weighed less and used less Fuels to get up. The Main Tank of the STS system would also be smaller.
Could a Heat Shield similar to what was on the Apollo Rockets be attached under the Heat Resistant Tiles ? That would have been a back up in case some of the Tiles came loose on launch or descent .
@CarlaLR74 if NASA is smart, then they would take the shuttles and put them into the halls , maybe in future missions a space shuttle of the new fleet cant launch cuz of problems or something, then there is still the old shuttles for rescue
@predatortheme There's not going to be a new Space Shuttle fleet. It's a whole new rocket design that will take us back to the moon and possibly even Mars. The Space Shuttles are being retired. The shuttles are almost literally falling apart, and it's an expensive program.
@sebbeweiwei Why not take the united states military funding and put it to World Aid? That would REALLY do something. This is only represents a very, very small percent of US federal budget, and that goes towards so much scientific discovery.
You mean those 3 holes that seem to tear open (at 0:45) as soon as the main engine are fully ignited?
I've heard its some sort of fabric or plastic cover to keep any rain and other materials from getting into the orbiter's aft area wich could cause damage to the internal components of the orbiter.
The holes are actually thrusters used to manoeuvre while in space.
Hi! I'm traveling to Florida to see the launch on Monday. What is the viewing area at 28 seconds? Is this the VIP viewing area or can anyone go to this place? Thanks
Just the SSMEs, the SRBs are not remotely controllable, although various thrusts are "built-in" to the shape of the solid propellant within so the SRBs provide different levels of thrust when needed.

9/11 FULL STORY was exposed worldwide first long ago.
From TV Fakery (no planes) to mini H bombs upwards directed, how Barbara Olson was murdered immediately after Massood, how Lisa Beamer was fooled, why the Pentagon and WTC7 were in the script, etc.
@emomufin69 I know this post is over 2 years old and you probably don't remember it anymore but your math is way off. 1100 mph is very slow at 2 minutes after launch. With that acceleration force it never would've left the ground. The 2600 mph is right and the 39 degrees you got is off as well. The reason you're off is because you assumed linear motion.
At the end of the video the CAPCOM says: .....we should have good (...) and s-band. This means that the "sounds UHF only" probably meant that there was a communications problem.
CDR Lindsay responds "Roger, go at throttle up! Sounds UHF only" to the throttle-up call. The "sounds UHF only" probably means that there is some disturbance on the Ultra High Frequency range of radiowaves.

"dwyanewadeflash3" You better look up a book or do some research on how the burning fuel of the rockets affects out atmosphere before talking things you do not know.
It contributes for a small percentage. But, since you are talking cheap, isn't smoking polluting our planet too? It actually pollutes more than rockets because millions smoke. Now, that's a waste of money and polluting the atmosphere for no necessity!!
The rockets have only a minute impact (less than seven-thousandths of one percent), both in absolute terms and relative to other chemical sources. It is much less than total ozone variability associated with volcanic activity and solar flares. So, get yourself a book and read.
Well, try and imagine how much (fossile) energy is needed to get the oxygen into liquid form, or to collect hydrogen in it's pure form as rocket fuel. A refrigerator doesn't 'save' or 'extract' energy. It actually heats up our environment more. Same with the energy supply for the shuttle. So, why loosen up?
