Monstrous. Brutal. Driving. intense. Mighty. :X3 Schubert might as well have been the progenitor of a genre of music that I most often associate with movie trailer scores (such as Two Steps From Hell, etc.), and said genre may simply be called:
Epic. Learning this piece. Loving every power-filled moment. X3>
This is the version I play for my students... it really freaks them out! They want to hear it over and over. I provide them a translation to address literacy, and the original German as well.
I'm actually just using this video for a paper I have to do, but Terfel's doing it!!! I was watching this amazing singer on Andrea Bocelli in central Park, and then I just saw him here and I was like, oh hey, its that guy lol :)
@usenetposts Just sayin' that we don't need to set our standards based solely on modern talent. That's the cool thing about recorded music. Have fun with Mr. Terfel in Prague. Cool city.
@scolas1 Though this is an excellent recording of this piece, I wouldn't call it a benchmark. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's recordings with EMI in the 60's set and have held that position. Terfel's attempts at differentiating the various voices sounds extremely affected, he is completely off his voice singing the Erlkönig's sections. Fischer-Dieskau conveys the characterization perfectly without sacrificing his impeccable technique. Still love Terfel though, 'specially his Vaughn Williams.
@justinmjones10 Ye-eah. Well, we're not gonna get to a Fischer-Dieskau concert, whereas I'm going to Bryn Terfel's one in Prague next week, so no point in going on about Fischer-Dieskau. That's not gonna get us anywhere.
Bryn Terfel has wonderful tone, and I respect (and admire somewhat) that he l is willing to sometime alter his technique for dramatic effect, but he has a tendency to croon when it is stylistically inappropriate, and it makes it sound poppy. I much prefer Fischer-Dieskau's recording of this song.
I am writing a paper comparing Loewe's Erlkonig to Schubert's, and I have to say, I just love Schubert's interpretation so much more. The contrast in the voices, the passionate drive of the triplets, I just love it!! It just brings out the meaning of Goethe's exquisite words all that much more! And what an excellent performance!
I would have liked him to sing lower. He sings in the same key than Fisher-Dieskau who is a light baritone. He's excellent in the "forte" but less in the "piano" sections.
Wow. I have studied this piece in school and I never knew that there is a real song about it... I mean, I guessed that there must be one, but I have never heard it. Very nice! I love Bryn Terfel's voice.
@natebaglyos I'm so glad you asked. I don't know why pianists' names are omitted so frequently in true partnerships like this! It's almost a tradition to omit their identity.
@aljazeerkazan Thanks very much for posting this incredible recording!
@natebaglyos Wonderful vocalist-always, during this period!! ---WOW!! the pianist -accompanist is totally BRILLIANT -again, remarkable work and brilliant pianist -- "clocked" (w/mmm) at 160-ish, intro with slight variatione -interpretive colour ! YES! THNX!
Thank you for posting this. This must surely be the benchmark performance of Schubert's Erlkönig. The incredible richness and purity of tone, the faultless diction and the great subtlety of tone between the three voices of the father, the child and the erl king make this the most perfect performance yet of this famous song. Just listen to the phrase "Mein Vater, mein Vater, jetzt fasst er mich an, Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan" - sheer perfection!
@scolas1 I absolutely love your observation. This is indeed, in your own words, the benchmark of Schubert's ErlKonig. What I may add is that many have underestimated Terfel's artistry. It shouldn't happen anymore.

Great version. The intensity is more urgent than I've herd in many versions and I love that.

pity theres no video of him performing it, the facial expressions are half the enjoyment of this song, fantastic stuff though!

Absolutely beautiful. Terfel truly brings out the fear and sugar-coated deceit of boy, father and Erlkönig. Wonderful and terrifying.

Good but no way the best. Terfel has considerable problem coping with the changes in register, especially to the upper register.
Dramatic, yes.
