Is wax-dipping an authentic way of sealing mead bottles? And could beeswax be used? Beeswax was the most common type of wax way back when, and if mead-makers were using wax, you can bet that it was probably beeswax.
Does sound like a great idea. But creating a seal with a coin (or any other metal piece, such as a signet-ring or a seal-stamp) takes a bit more skill than just dunking and swirling a bottle in hot wax. However, done correctly, the end result is beautiful.
You are right. I have a beautiful signet that I bought and it took some practice. the wax consistency has to be just right to get a crisp indentation.
Have you ever tried to use the bee wax from you hives to seal? I heard that you can use simple dyes for color

@ThinkingRebal Great idea. I have never tried it. I should.

Does this change how the wine ages at all? or stop it all together? Im guessing this allowes you to store the bottle upright instead of on its side?

you might try pouring the wax onto the bottle while it sits on a paper plate to give it a drippy look

@AmericanAcquiescence sure, wax dipping has been used for centuries. And I bet beeswax works very well.

Can this wax be used for a seal stamp? I find the wax seal stamp is ridiculously expensive.

@SuchaCaligrrl I have a wax seal stamp and I cant remember if I tried this wax with it. I believe I did and I think it worked out good.

@489305004 Can't think of the brand name offhand but they are sold specifically to wine makers.

Thank you and could you also show how to put screw caps, please.
SKTPSY 2 years ago
You are very welcome. Actually I have never used screw caps with mead!
epicfantasy 2 years ago
@epicfantasy do wax/screw caps make wine taste difference? By the way what is mead? Sorry!
SKTPSY 2 years ago
I am not sure about the effectiveness of screw on caps. Mead is wine made from honey rather than grapes. It is a very old tradition.

Muy bueno.

Very nice. But I was wondering if I could use regular red candle wax?
seanswede 2 years ago
Regular candle wax doesn't have the right consistency. It will tend to break. I say give it a shot and see. Worst is that you have to peel it off.
epicfantasy 2 years ago
That gives an excellent look
wipka 3 years ago
It sure does. And the wax comes in different colors which is nice. The red looks good with my labels.

nice.
one quick tip, if you press the top down onto a coin while it's still hot/melted; it'll make a nice emblem.

Great idea! Thanks :) A very old or european coin would probably look great.
