@gazzymodo : Who first recorded this song? I remember hearing in late on BBC2 late night instead of the National Anthem!! I think it was recorded by a UK group. Regards, Desmond, Dublin.
So nice to hear again. Heard it back in the mid-80's on a PBS station in the Washington DC Metro area. Fell in love with it right then and there. EXCELLENT.
Here I am... back again to listen to this WONDERFUL song.. The King's Singers are fabulous, amazing and super talented... Long may they continue to sing... Bravo Gentlemen.... bravo indeed equals a very happy me... :0)x
……. Thank you, Moss Moms, I'm honoured to 'bee' where I am, & with your help, & thank you, pj12222, for uploading this exquisite gem from The King's Singers ~ (•8-D
the ohio state university men's glee club does an arrangement of this that i must admit i prefer to the original king's singers version. I believe it was arranged by Tim Sarsany from columbus, ohio, but i'm not absolutely sure. i'd love to find a recording of it to show you all, but i've come up short...
You are correct. The alumni of the group in fact performed a concert this past July. The Statesmen sang it, with Tim and others, singing the counter tenor part .
They are fabulous and so is Canada's Men's Choir Chor Leoni, based in Vancouver b.c. (home of the most per capita, choirs in North America.) It is not uncommon for people to sing in three choirs here.
I have never heard of the King Singers before. I don't know why because they are excellent. I came across them looking for competition for my granddaughter's "Absu Road" video. The talent out there is staggering.
John David, the great British singer-songwriter (Welsh, actually) who was an integral part of the Dave Edmunds Band in the 1980s composed this track for his own band, "Airwaves" in 1977.
one of the most beautiful, calming, loving and lovable songs by the KS.... made even better by the quality of this slide show - simply wonderful!
I am a fan of the King's Singers for far longer than I care to admit.... :) They've never lowered their singing standards and the show goes on and on.... THANK YOU SO MUCH for uploading this video and for making my day!
@kikivolauvent ... I am a fan too.. I have been watching and enjoying their singing since the 80's... hee hee.. Long seasoned fans I think.. This is marvellous and so calming too... :0)x
:)))) - I know exactly what you mean - I might be a KS fan for about the same length of time. I remember that I went to a performance of them in Zurich (Switzerland) in the 1980th.... with my little brother! And they were drinking beer in the garden of the opera house, smoking, laughing, talking... I couldn't believe it because at that time I had to keep 'quiet and composed' before a concert!!!
@kikivolauvent ... Another absolute favourite of mine is 'Lullabye'.... Oh and 'Pie Jesu' by John Brunning (filmed in an Abbey) stunning and it makes me cry with it's simple beauty.... *sighs deeply and listens again* :0)x
Listening to this song is a ritual for me. The beauty of their voices, the double choir overdubs, the soothing harmonies are just wonderful. EVERY time i am on youtube I have to listen to this song. AHHHHHH...:]
I love too much this group and would enjoy if one day they come to Brasil. They have presentation all aroud the world unless here, unfortunately. For me it is always a present of God to hear from the youtube such a high qualified and calming music.
The overtones in this song... and the DYNAMICS... and the range of the tenor... Oh, dear God. This is the 2nd best song I've ever heard. They also did a Christmas version called "Born on a New Day" that makes me weep. It's SO beautiful.
The words and music are in a 25th Anniversary Kings Singers collection - including a wonderful version of "And So It Goes" - published by Hal Leonard Ref: 08602134
personally, i agree with eliasmaddie in the aspect that it's about the beginning of a new generation of life, like babies or even teens. It's such a powerful song and I love it. But all opinions are acceptable to me
I hate to risk this, but I suspect the song is probably about God (multi-meaning theories aside). The idea is that the natural splendour of the early morning removes any doubt for our mind that God is creating and sustaining all things. This gives us hope. (I'm not particularly religious, just trying to fit analogies one line at a time...)
@gostridr2012 yeah, that's true. i just mean, if they were singing it to someone, telling someone, "you are the new day," they'd be addressing the next generation.
omigod that's so cool! i love this song, it's so beautiful and inspiring. it seems to me that these ppl who "are the new day" are basically kids and teens, the next generation, and i'm a teen, so the song rlly gets 2 me in that way.
My dad used to sing this to me all the time, so even when he's abroad all I have to do to see him is listen to this song. Plus it sounds good, cause he is in a singing group. ^_-
This is so beautiful...it takes me out of this physical world and into place where the angels of God move about, not quite to heaven but at its doorstep, it is unreal
It is called counter-tenor and a person's voice can be trained to sing that high even if his speaking voice is relatively low. It is awesome, isn't it.
8 or 10 years ago one of the local PBS TV stations played this video at the end of a broadcast day. Having never heard it, I was stunned. I contacted that station and asked what the song was but no one knew. The internet was still pretty new that long ago and looking back, it feels like I moved heaven and earth (and bought lots of a cappella choral CD's) to find it. The lyrics are outstanding, the music is incomparable and the performance is perfect. Permanently on my all-time fav list!
"Time Piece" is on the 20th anniversary sampler, but might be on others as well. It is a long song. Seen it in concert as well. Only the King's Singers could do it.
anyone have a recording of their original song written in the late eighties called "Timepiece" or maybe just "time" I haven't heard it since then in a live concert and here 20 years later I'm still hoping to hear it one more time.
This is a truly beautiful song. I was a great fan of the original Kings Singers, and would love to watch and listen when they were on the telly. I was wondering if anyone could help? They performed "The Magnificat" during a TV appearance quite a few years ago. I don't know if it was their own show or if they were "guesting". I would love to be able to find this piece as I remember singing it at evensong in my local church, and they performed it so beautifully. Can anyone help please?
Well, there have been countless Magnificats composed by countless composers. If you have any clue as to who the composer (or even the arranger) was, it'd help someone to find out. When I did a google search for "King's Singers Magnificat", I found a link saying that they did a "Magnificat" setting by Orlandus Lassus, and it's on a CD (How excellent is Thy name: Sacred music of Lassus). Try that.
Thank you so much for the information you have been kind enough to supply. Unfortunately I do not know the composer or arranger of "The Magnificat" as performed by the original King's Singers during this particular performance. You have, however, given me a point of reference from whence to start, and I thank you once again for your help.
Lovely song...I remember the original was done by a group called - I think - Airwave and was a minor Christmas hit in the late '70's. Anyone remember it?
I wrote a few monthes back that the band were called Airwaves, and yes it was a minor hit back in 1977, have the LP with me £4.79 it cost, Airwaves were three Americans Ray Martinez, John David & Dave Charles recorded @ Rockfeild Studios,Wales. I will get round to getting it on You Tube
we sang this last year in center stage (show choir) for the senior convocation at my school. i loved it back then...way back in sept. 07...and i still love it. it reminds me of all the friends i had last year that arent at my school anymore...and i feel sad but happy too (is that weird?) i cant believe its almost time for this years seniors to graduate (im a junior)...ill miss them too
This was awesome, thanks for posting it. I sang it back in high school so many years ago. While I wasn't nearly as good, this brought back all sorts of good memories. ^_^
Ahh I remember them singing this at the National Youth Choirs gala concert last year - I was sat with training choir in the galleries, first class seats!
What could be better than waking up and hearing this song. Makes you wanna go out and greet the birds and trees out of sheer joy and then realizing that you forgot to dress while the neighbors are greeting your little willy.....
This has long been one of my favorites by the Singers. I wish they would do more Geronimo Bassano and Nicholas Lanier though, as they are ancestors, and darned hard to come by these days.
@squirell1952: i believe it was 'Airwaves' 1979. G

This was awesome, thanks for posting it. I sang it back in high school so many years ago. While I wasn't nearly as good, this brought back all sorts of good memories. ^_^

Szkoda, że ta piękna pieśń chóralna nie doczekała się godnej ilustracji...Ta zbieranina luźnych obrazków jest porażająca...

Just beautiful, brings tears to my eyes. I remember the King's Singers on TV when I was a kid in the UK - is the original line up still together?
Jojoseahorse 3 years ago
nope... including the current members, there has been a total of 19 singers over the 40 years of their existance. they have a website...

What could be better than waking up and hearing this song. Makes you wanna go out and greet the birds and trees out of sheer joy and then realizing that you forgot to dress while the neighbors are greeting your little willy.....

This song makes me think of Barack Obama.
This has long been one of my favorites by the Singers. I wish they would do more Geronimo Bassano and Nicholas Lanier though, as they are ancestors, and darned hard to come by these days.
