The 70's were an awesome time in boxing,,,, ABC and Howard Cossell were incredible together,,, If Lyle were fighting today he would be champ,, rest easy friend,,, you were a warrior in the ring
andrelebaron,,ron could of been champ ,,,but he was in the wrong era of boxing,,,b cause of ali, norton, fraizer, foreman, ive seen allof his fights on tv,,, pay per view, also good fighter,,, had george down ,,but couldnt put him out!!!!!
rip ron lyle who died 2 day saturday 26,age 70,, a good fighter, never complain, just fought his heart out , will always be remember for this fight with george!!!!
@09bnunez watch his fight with Shavers and then this. That had to be two of the toughest back to back fights against two of the heaviest, if not the heaviest hitters in the history of the sport and Lyle had a war with both of them.
this fight gets even more amazing when you realize that lyle had just finished with ernie shavers who most consider the hardest hitter of all time. And it was just like this fight. both guys knocked down a lot by the most evil power shots of all time.
holy shit , foreman fought for 8 years took a break for 10 years then returned and continued for 10 years, thats 27 years. 81 fights and he only lost 5.
Definetely one of the greatest boxers punch for punch.
watched this live. i was 10yrs old watching with my dad. 1st fight i ever watched. i became an instant fight fan. boxing is my favorite sport and this is the greatest fight i have seen in all my yrs. it just doesnt get any better. foreman, lyle, howard, kenny norton, vegas, the crowd standing on its feet, EPIC!
This is as close to Lyle as Norton would allow himself to be. Norton wanted no rematch with Foreman. Yet somehow he got a title shot against Ali. Who did Norton beat to justify a third match with Ali? He only fought Shavers later on because that was the only way he could get himself back in contention. And look at what happened. Norton wouldn't fight Frazier because they were friends. So they took turns fighting Ali but not each other.
@flash3182 It's also likely that money was an issue too. Promoters tend to want to make money on the fights they put together, and they may have decided those match-ups were bigger ticket fights. Some big money match-ups never happen because the promoters don't want to take the risk of their name fighters losing. A lot of fighters will take on whoever is in front of them, but their trainers don't want to risk it.
@flash3182 Yeah, Norton hated punchers.......However, he should've gotten an immediate rematch with Holmes after he lost the title by one point.......Instead, Holmes fought Evangelista and Norton fought some scrub named Randy Stephens...He shouldn't have had to fight Shavers to get another title shot......
I remember watching this fight when I was 9 years old and an amateur fighter. and the next week I was in a tournament. This fight was a war. I can't believe Foreman got up from the second knockdown when he went down head first. Ronnie lyle was a fearless fighter who gave Ali a real test.
@dapoetmaster Your right!! Lyle did put the screws to George!! It was the toughest win
in Georges fight history...Lyle was a durable,,strong and exciting fighter..there were only a handfull of fighters that made me want to watch all of their fights..Ron Lyle was one of them,,along with Foreman,Ali,,Frazier..I really can't find anything bad to say about Ron Lyle..He was a "gold star" in boxing!!.Im sure there are a lot of Lyle fans out there like me!!!
@onlyjoetee@bagzie I saw this fight at age 12 one Saturday afternoon, after I ran home to watch the usual Wide World of Sports. I remember laying on my living room floor in front fo the TV, and even at age 12, I knew there was something quite incredible about this fight, and I talked about once in a while as the years passed to boxing fans, many of whom had only heard about it but never saw it. I feel
@onlyjoetee Im myself at a young boy just shy of three years old watch with the male members of my family George Foreman Demolishing Michael Moorer. I am now and Amateur fighter with a record of 19-0 with 17 KOs to my credit.
What a fight! You don't see anything close to this in terms of action these days; most fighters now are afraid of getting hit much less getting hurt. As for Cosell, great call as usual. However, his appearance brings up an important point: If you wear a toupee, don't let the grandkids play with it before you put it on.
@vidnut67 this was a great fight. But there have been numerous wars this decade that have topped peoples greatest fights of all time's list. To say that action nowadays is scarce is a huge understatement
@wukillah92 I can't think of one that even matches the action in this one. What's more, you don't see the top fighters these days going for knockouts like they used to.
@vidnut67 i dont mean to disrespect you, but that is an ignorant comment. Wars like MAB vs Morales/ Gatti vs Ward/ Corrales Vs Castillo/ Vasquez vs Marquez are some of the most exciting fights in boxing's history and it all happened this decade
@wukillah92 You can disagree with people without resorting to insults, and you need to be careful how you use a term such as "ignorant". I have watched fights in this decade, and I stand by my statement that they don't quite measure up. Learn some manners.
@vidnut67 Whats important about being a fan of boxing is too adapt to changing times and not be nostalgic toward a time period in which you loved boxing the most. My faveourite fighters include guys like Ezzard Charles, Ray robinson, Duran, Ali, Hopkins. Fighters who arent necessarily modern. But seriously if you dont find fights such as Gatti vs Ward 1 to be as entertaining as old school fights then I will call you ignorant. im not saying its the best, but it belong to HOF status
@vidnut67 I may be young but if you have grown up reading, watching and participating in a sport such as boxing, you eventually become it. Age shouldnt even be an issue, you should be encouraging more people my age to follow boxing rather than criticise young fans for having opinions
@wukillah92 Hey, if I don't have the right to criticize younger fans for having an opinion, then you don't have the right to call me ignorant. Same difference. Sounds like it's a one-way street with you. I either accept what you say or I'm ignorant. I don't play it that way. At least I didn't resort to name-calling. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this. Good day.
RIP GREAT FIGHTER

This fight is the closest real-life fight to the fight in "Rocky 2" because in both those bouts the two opponents kept knocking each other down.

@danning1 no it'd be Rock 1 because in Rocky 2 Rocky only knocked Apollo down once, in the first movie it was back and fourth. lol
