Hi Sallie6 tried to send a couple of pics of Laurel Lea through to you but all 3 emails came back. Please email me again & give me another email address so I can send them through to you. or you can contact Mark as I have sent them through to him & hopefully he has received them. Figalafa1
I believe Laurel Lee was a great talent unfortunately at a time when Australian artists could not get past the US & UK artists. If someone with this much talent were here today she would be world beater.
She was born Lorraine May Chapman (well thats what it says on my birth certificate). Con Lianos was her step father (my step Grandfather) I've mentioned some detail about this in an earlier post. Thanks to all of you for your comments.
hi mark what was the name your mum was born under? also i think you are right she spelled her last name lea (not lee) can you tell me what it was like growing up with her?do you have photos?kind regards shez940
Yes, Mum sadly passed away in 1992. It was 2 weeks before my wedding, she never got to meet her grandchilren who are now 16 & 11.
I really appreciate all the ppl who have posted here with nice things to say.
Just for the record Mum was not born Lorraine Lianos, Con Lianos was my step Grandfather (he was the one who had the "rock n roll travelling tent show") Mum was not born under that name. I'm also pretty sure her stage name was Laurel Lea NOT Lee.
hi mark what was the name your mum was born under? is your dad still with you? i cant believe your mum actually sang 5 days before she died what a trooper kind regards shez940
Can anybody help me please? I remember Laurel Lee sang a song with a guy in about 1964/65 and the opening words were "come let us love, what have we to be guilty of, why be afraid when we didn't ask to be brought here anyway". Very confronting for parents at that time!
I didn't understand the joke of why the audience roared with approval when those 2 bearded guitarists joined her, until the very end when they joined hands , bowed, and pranced off the stage. I then realized---they were doing a send-up of Peter Paul & Mary!!!
Laurel's parents owned a travelling rock 'n' roll tent show. In the 60s, she travelled with them around Australia doing rock shows in local halls, and in the mid-70s, she joined back up with Johnny O'Keefe and a few others from the earlier rock years, appearing in clubs together in the "Good Old Days of Rock 'n' Roll" show. Laurel Lee made several records, but had no chart success. She also had a band in the 80s called "Chockarock," which toured the circuit and played old time rock and roll.
In 1974 she appeared in The Good Old Days of Rock'n'Roll". Laurel Lee, born Lorraine Lianos, was a regular Australia TV singer on shows such as Brian Henderson's "Bandstand" and Johnny O'Keefe's "Six O'clock Rock" in the late 50s/early 60s, mostly singing cover versions of US hits. She married fellow "Bandstand" singer Kevin Todd, and had a son Mark.
Laurel appeared many times on Bandstand and Six O'Clock Rock. I know she died young and I love her beautiful face and her bright chirpy voice. Laurel Lee died on January 31, 1992 of Leukaemia.
Eileen Rodgers had the biggest-selling version of this song, with the record reaching No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the autumn of 1958. Rodgers, born in Pittsburgh in 1933, was a vocalist with the Charlie Spivak Orchestra in the mid-1950s.
Gosh, I remember Laurel Lee, Judy Stone, Bev Harrell, Yvonne Barrett, Pat Carroll (my uncle was married to her cousin), Marcie Jones, Alison McCallum, and so on. So many terrific girl popsters from that era in Oz.
I remember Laurel was really good looking but I'd forgotten how damn cute she really was. My Lord, she's beautiful! Sings good, too.
