The backing singers sure enhance the charm of this version. After hearing the Wilson stereo version also on YT, this comes across to me as not measuring up to it, indicating that the standard was set rather high indeed.
Nancy Wilson's version is one of my fave songs of all time, and although I heard Miss Aretha's version for the first time today I really appreciate her version. It is beautifully done her way.
A very young Aretha. was she twenty yet? I remember Running out of Fools and Soulville best for this time. Before that was Precious Lord. I had to go back as an adult and revisit this period and discover some great cuts by Aretha from her early days. Found a great two record set once at a used record store about thirty uears ago with some wonderful songs including this one on it. Finally replaced that poor worn thing with a cd. I wish the record companies would issue all and let us decide.
This is Aretha at her pinnacle and knowing it. She is like a great athlete who is so far out ahead that they actually do something out of form as turning a little sideways before crossing the line. This happens when she is doing the intricate vocal inflections and then one completely out of sync to show she is even beyond the difficulty of the song. This is the Aretha that the majority who hear "Respect" over and over do not get a chance to marvel at.

Yeppp ... nailed it from the beginning:-)
"I wish I were (would be) an artist, so I could paint a picture of how I feel, so what I feel to-day"
listening to this fantastic tune.
Nancy Wilson's song but Aretha puts her own emotional style and that's good enough for me.
