@MrLolzy some unit in Viet Nam may have had the abbreviation as meaning it S. Patrol I.E., and today it is called S. Purpose. I. E. It's the same thing. Just like SWAT used to mean "special weapons attack team" and now generally is taken to mean "special weapons and tactics". A Marine Expeditionary Unit also used to be called a Marine Amphibious Unit.
