5d in France ..cool, do france go chess has professional player's dan and unprofessional player's dan? cuz i know in china, there is 2 kinds of dan, one for professional players, another for unprofessional players.
anyhow - china, japan, korea and i think taiwan have institutions where they pay people to study and play go. those players are usually stronger than any amateur (with exceptions). as far as i know no european country has such an organisation. so when a european is a pro dan, its because some asian organisation pays him. like catalin taranu who is a 5p (professional 5dan which is about as strong as 8-9 dan amateur) in the japanese organisation.
I think Catalin is a really nice guy too. He speaks english well too which is a big plus. I've listened to Japanese pros from other videos and I've had a hard time following them.
