These hair offerings seem to be given freely. The people interviewed did not care that the hair was later sold though I'm sure some might if they knew. It may be less about exploitation and more about us not understanding the religious and cultural motivations of others.
I am grateful for this industry because since developing alopecia some of this hair ends up in my wigs. This is why I can afford quality hair replacement. For some of us, the reasons are medical rather than mere vanity.

Yes, you are right about these religious practices that has spanned over the centuries. I think it's just about the exploitation of these religious practices. Instead of just re-investing the profit that is made into improving their local community and their country's economy, the money goes elsewhere. Or the hair can be donated to wig makers of charitable causes that support the cancer patients who lose their hair through chemotherapy, for example.
I thoroughly agree with you. This has been the case with the enormous amounts collected by the temples as donation from devotees. This amount runs in millions of dollars, hardly are there a few temples which plough back the money for the development of the society. Places of worship in the contemporary world are used by the people who are the so called administrators to fill their coffers and are increasingly becoming a forum for narrow political propaganda.
I guess this is where programs like these will inform people like you and me about "inscrutable" practices. Hopefully it will make institutions more accountable with what they do with people's donations and the influence they wield with their congregation. In the case of the Hindu people, I think educating the people in charge with other options on what options are available to them, the people may rethink on how they can better use the hair sacrifice. That is in my humble opinion. =)
When you say people may rethink how they can better use their sacrificed hair, you should understand that the people are not actually bothered about what is happening to their hair after they have sacrifised because for them this way to worship God. They would and should never be bothered about the economic aspects.
I never said about the hair donors who should be educated; rather the people who are in charge who need to be educated how they can better use the sacrificed hair. (Whether the authorities be the governing body of the county/village or ones in charge of the temple's "going-ons".)
It is the authorities who should be held accountable for the utilisation of the income generated from the sale of hair. The temple authorities should take steps to plough back the income generated this way for the benefit of pilgrims, like better roads, subsidised housing and subsidised/free food for the pilgrims. These activities would go a long way in addressing the genuine humanitarian concerns.

This amount runs in millions of dollars, hardly are there a few temples which plough back the money for the development of the society. Places of worship in the contemporary world are used by the people who are the so called administrators to fill their coffers and are increasingly becoming a forum for narrow political propaganda.

The temple authorities should take steps to plough back the income generated this way for the benefit of pilgrims, like better roads, subsidised housing and subsidised/free food for the pilgrims. If anyone is being victimized, then they are being victimized by their Temple. It's the Temple that sells their hair.
You can't give something away then complain later you didn't get money for it. It's either a gift or a sale. Choose one and cut the dramatics.

These hairs are sacrificed to the God, something western, and in particular, that black British doesn't understand.... The vary act of giving the most precious thing in dedication to the god doesn't account any profit or thing. Once the hairs are given away, it is inconsequential as to what happens to them, and how someone profits from them. The industry came long after the ritual had been enshrined... Women shaving head is not a widespread practice at all.

Conti: If all Indians started shaving their head, the market will crash with over supply. Shaving head for religious purpose is not bad, but exploiting women out of religious environment by usually inciting them with financial reward is bad... The documentary itself was exploiting the situation by making a documentary, and earning profit....

black women use this for weaves.Even if black ppl watch this they'll continue to buy Indian hair for weaves.There were flies on that hair & it's also taken from poor,innocent children.

It made me cry to see all those poor little children crying. They're so innocent and it's sad that this is what they have to go through to make other people feel beautiful. Their sacrifice is truly genuine and not for vanity. I hope they stop sacrificing the children for this. It should be when they're older to understand and agree to do it.

it's just like if you take a 5 year old to any hair salon in america for a regular hair cut...they will cry because they dont understand....it's not that they are being tortured....
