Magnificent!! Its so impressive when Grandmaster Tatum closes after the first side of protecting fans, Its like crashing thunder!! One of the greatest if NOT THEE greatest blackbelt that ever lived. And the speed is wonderful, lovely neat yet quick transitions between each individual technique.
, I love this form, and especially the way master tatum does it, one question though whats the best way to do this form, do you need to do it very fast or can u do it slow whats the best way.
you should first be able to do it slow. do everything in the form, dont shortcut anything. then work your way up to doing it fast. testing situation or tournament setting you should do it fast. and because you have done everything slow and perfect if will look good. there is no best way. just depends on situation.
I noticed someone gave me a thumbs down for telling the truth about why Tatum split with Parker's IKKA. Hey people, I'm just telling you what Ron Chapel, a guy who stayed with IKKA till Parker died, said in a Kenpo forum.
No offense taken. Your English is alot better than my Portuguese! As long as you know that forms have no practical self defense use then I have no arguement with you.
@talon115 Because it's repetition of your basics. You can't workout 8 hours a day banging on your partnters and not get injured in the longrun. Forms also force you to pay attention to precision moves. Most of your 'bangers' can't do forms, because they don't have the mental organization or memory faculties to do so.
When a Martial Artist can both fight and do forms incredibly well, you know you're looking at the real deal.
@Deilgyre Maybe so, but most of your bangers as you call them are more prepared for a real fight than some fancy dan who can look oh so pretty at forms.
ok these bangers got the resistance to fight ill give u that, because all they do is fight. but a kenpo master or any martialartes is also trained to fight, we sparr almsot every day at least at my gym we do spar every day at the end of each class or sometimes at the begining. but we also do forms becasue its the artistic side of the martial arts. kenpo is divided in 3 secrtions if u will:
1) basics- we see them in forms.
2) self defense techniques - we also see them in forms .
@alexcolman1 Yup he's right those are Ed Parkers exact words that those are the sections then you go furthur into sub sections. Sparring is part of it. Kenpo people also do some pretty intense conditioning.
Amazing! Definitely time to go practice my forms! I'd like to know when this was filmed, and where. It's a beautiful setting. Was this Mr. Tatum's school? Or Mr. Parkers?
This was 1988, after Tatum's split with IKKA because Parker didn't want to give Tatum a raise despite Tatum being Parker's most cash-generating instructor.
excelent work. great form, good trnasition, very good way to show that you dont need to rush through the forms in order for em to look good, he took his time, and it was gorgeouse to watch this form good work master tatum.

How can doing this possibly help someone defend themselves?
talon115 2 years ago
Same way shadow boxing can. I've seen great shadow boxers in the gyn but once they get in the ring they suck balls. I bet Tatum is that way too.

Cmon man, dont be ignorant (no offense) .
Form is art... Art of Movement... And then, you have the more realistic part... The self defence techniques and the sparring ;)
Sorry about any error but Im Portuguese and im not an expert in English ;)

@Deilgyre Even Bruce Lee did forms didnt he? He did quit Wing Chun as his exclusive martial art but he kept it at the core of JKD.
