The problem with that fallout stuff is that it's most dangerous if inhaled/ingested. When it's a finely pulverized dust in the air, that's kinda hard to avoid. It gets on your food. It gets in your lungs when you breathe. Sometimes, mask filters can't filter out all the particles.

The 1986 Chernobyl accident released 400 times as much radiation as did the Nagasaki bombing, though. Bombs are made to be efficient...
