  • Thank you! You fantastic young men. You got the job done! And it wasn't an easy job!

  • haunting song

    war- a tragic waste

  • my grandpa was in WWI in the the US Army. when he died in the 80's, i got alot of pictures he took over in France 1917 - 1919, crashed bi-planes, blown up tanks, buildings, wounded soldiers, and French soldiers he worked with. he was also a boxer in the Army and was in the FlyPaper, Army newspaper for winning fights, his nickname was "Kid Barber". In one photo there is a crashed bi-plane with a 4-leaf clover on the tail wing, always wondered what country the plane was from ? anyone know ?

  • @StarletAndTheHoods i've done some research, and can't find the symbol on any planes i've seen, maybe German, cause it's kinda like an iron cross but 4-leaf clover instead. i don't know, anyone know ???

  • The war to end all wars?

What a Joke more like.... The springboard for a century of Devine intervention!

  • brave men believed the lies and gave their all and the social elite gave the orders from the safety of being out of range.

    follow no man!

  • my granfather was ypres,he volunteered! bloody fool !

  • Such a shame that there had to be 2 big wars.

  • .I think this guy said it best, British Prime Minister Lloyd George wrote, "The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforward they were marked out as shock troops; for the remainder of the war they were brought along to head the assault in one great battle after another. Whenever the Germans found the Canadian Corps coming into the line they prepared for the worst."

  • 3:17 i think that guy got hit

  • @Mariolinomaiunagioia you guys betrayed the central powers only because you know you were going to lose what a bunch of cowards, Italy is a disgrace

  • @LiftedResearch666 Peace on you, sir. I think that many people would say that United States are a disgrace, isn't it???

  • @Sarettapro1984 Not during the world war one era.

  • @Muckknuckle It doesn't matter. From the WW2 until today, yes.

  • @Sarettapro1984 Meh, debatable. I can't really argue this though considering I am American and therefore can't have a truly objective opinion.

  • @Sarettapro1984 well we arent cowards we stick to 1 side not even the Russians could do that :)

  • If any of the Generals from both sides must have taken part in the battle, the war might have been finnished after 2 months.

Rgretably, Generals from all sides didnt care too much about what they expected from their soldiers. The "honor" of capturing or re-capturing a hill , of gaining a fewhundred yards was often was higher valued than the lifes of thousands of men, regardless of the armies involved.

The price was only paid by ordinary soldiers, who trusted in what they were told.

  • An impressive video that commands respect, even from me as German.

But above all the tragedy, it should not be forgotten that NO COUNTRY AT ALL involved in that war, was trying to prevent it.

Regretably, Germany was dictaded to sign that it allone was responsible for the war.

The neutral viewer should judge, if this - together with the economical execution of Germany 1919 - was the base of success for Hitler.

Brave soldiers , rest in peace.

  • @gosuc As an American, I agree. The winners write the history books, they say, but that doesn't make the history books accurate.

  • Amazing song

  • Rest in peace brave Canadian brothers...Thank you for your sacrifice.Least we forget.fromEngland.

  • new zealanders lost more lives in this batlle than any other in the history of n.z...total waste...but least we forget.

  • anyone who says 'Canadians' are pussies, well, they obviously dont know about Passchendaele France, or Juno beach Normandy. they're great neighbors to the north to me.

  • nice song

  • I want to see lots of blood and guts...

  • @Gazza30592 Then kill yourself.

  • @Gazza30592

These men did, so you could play silly war games on a playstation

  • Sad to see there is so much squabbling over who was responsible for winning the war, who fought hardest, or longest. It is a shameful tragedy that the war was ever fought. A futile, brutal, and cruel war if ever there was one, fought for the worst reasons.

But let us instead remember all those who fought and died for their friends, and for their country, and may they be remembered, respected and honored for all time.

  • That is so disrespecful

  • I must admit, Canadians were the troops that the Germans actually feared to fight against. It was General Currie and Byng that were the two of the most intelligent generals of their time. And they made Haig look like a complete idiot as well. Canadians deserve a lot of acknowledgment for WW1

  • @MrOgiopojeo A mokey makes Haig look like an idiot

  • @MrOgiopojeo I completely agree, not only ww1 but ww2, dieppe & Normandy for example, the Canadians have our greatest allies over the years ..

  • Сколько людей погибло! За что?! Вильгельм II хуже Гитлера!

  • Why is there always an argument on youtube? Just enjoy the video dude

  • please put this on spotify!! :) this song is great :)

  • I thank you.

  • My Great Uncle, 267104 PTE RF Allen (formerly of Quill Lake Sask), late of the 28th Battalion CEF, was wounded at Passchendaele on 06 Nov 1917, and succumbed to his wounds the following day..... he lost both legs and left arm to a nasty burst of co-ordinated machine gun fire (MG08)...

RIP Robert. His legacy still lives in faded photos, letters, his medals and momentos sent home.....

  • @1feral1 not only in photos... thanks to men like your great oncle I live in a free country.

  • @vroegrijk2 Your kind words took me by complete surprise. Thank-you Sir for expressing yourself with such honesty and appreciation. I am quite humbled.

  • Thanks for the vid man. You're one of us! William Searson RIP.

  • ANY CHANCES TO HAVE THIS VIDEO/SONG IN BETTER QUALITY? ;/

  • @TheVerinen2 Yes! A high quality copy of this song can be obtained at the Pont des Arts website. See description above.

  • the futility.

Sent off to suffer and die by corrupt governments who are still doing it

Never Forget Who Sent Them To Die.

    RIP.

  • Lance Corporal Alexander McIntyre.

    Black Watch, Royal Highlanders.

    Died 28th of September 1918.

  • @SoylentJei

Sorry, Brother. Keep the peace, my friend. God bless.

  • 100 years in 1914. WW1 Never forget!

  • @Mariolinomaiunagioia Thank-you!

  • omg from the view of the picture it looks like Passchendaele was practically destroyed

  • Very graphic pics of dead soldiers laying in pieces in the mud..It's a very sad sight to see young man dying for something that had nothing to do with them other than they used to be a British Colony of sorts at one time..VERY SAD INDEED!!! Churchill was a useless wanker! He had intelligence on the Louisitania and allowed it to be sunk when he cuda stopped it..Just so he cud force American hands into the war..Leaders of men my arse! ScumOfTheEarthMoreLike...haha! Scum!!!

  • @richiemac182 how old are you?

  • best tune ive heard in ages ,, moving stuff,, great,,,

  • Lets not do this again ok.

  • A salute to ALL the brave men on both sides that swallowed their terror that swelled up inside them and crossed the field of death not knowing if they will live or die!.

  • Never alone, surrounded by friends

With a love letter of love in my

    coat

    A strange sensation

And the coular of love become's visible

  • my great grandfather fought at the river the 'ijzer', he's burried in our town the same graveyard as my brother and his gravestone has the mark of Belgium. let us remember the people who died in those barren lands

  • Rest in Peace, the men of Passchendale.

  • so sad.. my great great grandad was a german officer in ww1 and he brought so many things back such as ghurka knives and many postcards that he took from dead english soldiers.. its so sad to read them

  • "A brick coloured stain on a watery wilderness". That's how what was left of Passchendaele village was described when the Canadians took it. It's amazing to see all those international headlines about the capture of such a tiny place that did'nt exist anymore! For that over 4,000 men died.

  • I think you guys should watch this video on PTSD and war injuries the soldiers suffered during WWI /watch?v=YdUEBzeA_qs

  • man, that town was obliterated

  • Thanks for this vid, it communicates so much all at once. And the song...

@caporalchef4. When the vicar says that and the Last Post is played I just can't hold it together.

  • Hey, can you send me that Toronto News Article?

  • This is just horrific.

  • god bless them all ,and may we all be Eternally greatful

  • It always amazes me, that we play familiar down home, folky kinda heart warming nostalgic and sentimental music as an ode to this ghastly war - which was a modern war, more modern than those now, because the weapons such as poison gas, huge underground mines, airplanes, zeppelins and submarines were all terrifying and novel. So the troops were innocent victims of imperial power and their innocence is like, 'Alas'. We play death metal when we blow up the Taliban.

  • "They shall not grow old, as we that are left to grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them"

  • I was Passendale a few weeks ago and visited the "columns of stone" in Tyne Cot cemetary, half of them labelled "known unto God" as the occupant was made unidentifiable by artillary fire. Its hard to believe such an event happened in modern times. Passchendaele was truly hell on earth. None of these young men could have in their wildest dreams imagined what they were getting into. God rest them.

  • like all members of the commonwealth...we all sent our young men to fight, the sharp pointy end of all those battles......was usually done by the Canadiens, the Australians and the New Zealanders...when the Americans arrived to fight . they were given to those soldiers with unusual hats...because the great powers had nothing but scorn for another army of soldiers with funny hats.God rest all the men with their unusual hats.

  • @Arcusinoz We were members of the British Empire at that time, not Commonwealth. You are right about the Dominions being the sharpe end but are not very accurate or fair to Brit divisions because they also took their fare share of spearheading attacks. One of the four divisions in the Canadian Corps during a good part of the hundred days was a regular Brit division, the 11th. The Australians were with the 4th Army during the breaking of the Hindenburg line, the 46th division (British) did it.

  • @Arcusinoz The Canadians were with the 1st Army. Who spearheaded the attacks with the 2nd and 3rd Armies? There was only one NZ division.

  • That's such a moving song

  • @fegelfan15 Thanks!

  • @mower Sure thing ;)

  • @fegelfan15 My Great Uncle died at this appaling battle fighting for the Canadian Army. He died on 10th November, same day as William Little. This is one of the best tributes to the dead I have heard. Thanks so much for posting it!

  • @daunt33 That's really sad. I'm sorry. It's just a tragic thing to happen, it destroys so much and so many. Every soldier deserves to be remembered for the sacrifices they made for their countries.

    When I went on a trip to visit a world war 1 cemetery and this was inscribes on a grave;

Remember me as you pass by,

As you are now, so once was I,

As I am now, so you will be,

Prepare for death and follow me.

They'll live on in our hearts

  • @wtfringe123

don't be foolish and be proud of canada, because they fought in war

  • the destruction of youth saved the lives of the elders pointless bloodshed ravaged the world and the scars of loss and regret will never be healed

  • Commonwealth FTW

  • My great grandfather fought there. He was 15, but told them he was 18. I still have his bayonet to this day.

  • I went on the ww1 battlefields trip with the school, it was so emotional, from that trip onwards every time I think about ww1 (nearlly every day) my heart throbs

  • Wow, Passchendaele after the battle looks alot like the Moon. Really sad.

  • So proud to have you as our commonwealth Allies, you've been with us in every war every step of the way. You are truly a brave lot (not to forget the other members of the commonwealth)

America however only roll in when it suits them and then claim that without them we would have lost and we should all bow down and love America. Pfffffft

100% behind you guys, From Britain xx

  • @camofrog44

Just thought I'd point out that Canada was automatically brought into WWI when Britain declared war due to Britain's control over its foreign policy at that time. Also, I think your historical conviction of America is unfair. They just did not see themselves as a part of the argument and didnt want to meddle in Europe's troubles (kinda wish they still had that mentality today too but they sadly don't). I think the US and UK are brother countries in all senses of the word.

  • @camofrog44 Thanku very much for ur comments. I'm happy to know that a connection between our nations exists. The UK's soldiers have always fought bravely aswell. But I don't feel 2 much animosity to the Unites States for the way they handled the war. I think they just felt as though the war in Europe was none of thier business(where as Canada was part of it whether they liked it or not). When USA did enter, with all its manpower & industrial might, it was definately a good thing for the allies

  • @camofrog44 But USA would not have been able to deploy thier soldiers in Europe if the allies had not held the line for all those years. Of course the Americans looked like they had achieved what all others could not, but infact they were just helping to tip over an exhausted boxer(Germany and her allies) who had just fought 24 rounds. Nevertheless, it is a good thing that the USA arrived. Many brave American soldiers died fighting at the close of that war.

  • @camofrog44 These stereotypes are common from French viewers but this is the 1st one I have seen from Britain. A very small percentage of Americans fit your stereotype. British and French troops fought valiantly in the Great War. I definitely agree with you that SOME Americans claim all the glory from WWI and WWII. We definitely were the driving force of WWII but WWI was won by the British. I support all of the Allies. We are a brotherhood (Britain, France, and America).

    From, an American

  • @EliteGrenadier1 I'm sorry if I came accross as a hater of America, I am grateful for their contribution during the wars and in current conflicts today. But I have an American friend who won't let me hear the end of how superior America is to us. Your contribution was very valuable to us in WWII but we would not have been defeated without you, we managed to kick the Germans out of Afrika and hold our own. France owes you the greatest debt. We are in my opinion the best alliance

  • @camofrog44

Thank you. We are the best alliance. Everyone hear who is French, British, or American, we must stick together. Divided we are strong but united we are stronger.

EliteGrenadier1 votre ami Your friend Elitegrenadier1

  • @EliteGrenadier1 Wow, sorry for being so honest but you sound like an idiot. There´s no such thing like an alliance needed anymore. And anyway the Americans only joined the side on which they had seen better chances to get more benefit. There were no real interests but only financial interests (or let´s call it greed) for the Americans to join WWI....So please stop spreading your pseudo-comradely nonsense of brotherhood between you, the French & the Brits. They laugh at you, too. From a German

  • @machierl Fuck it. I tired of trying to be nice to everyone. Most of the Brits have at least a grudging sort of respect for America. They make fun of us and we make fun of them. We both respect each other. France on the other hand is always sending hate replies to American comments. I do acknowledge that wars are not for honor anymore they're for money, oil, etc. We shouldn't still be fighting a verbal war. Can't we just get along and focus on real enemies (Terroritsts, extremists, etc). Peace

  • @EliteGrenadier1

Terrorists are not our real enemies, they're just a crazy cult and should be treated as no more than elaborate criminals.

  • @EliteGrenadier1 You are powerful only in words.. ask the french people what they think

  • @EliteGrenadier1

Hey Russia played a part too :/

  • @Zvesda They surrendered 1917.

  • @Zvesda In the WW2, the best part I think ;) ...

  • @EliteGrenadier1 Don't forget Russia, asshole

  • @EliteGrenadier1 ever hear of vimy ridge? yea? that was all canada, thanks for the apreciation

  • @EliteGrenadier1 Nice comment but if it wasn't for Britain Declaring War on Germany in the second world wa, who would of stood up for justice? If I'm correct America wanted nothing to do with the Conflicts in Europe at the time.

  • @RickyForStation The Second World war aside, America had the right idea but they were tricked into joining the horrific First World War, that NEVER should have been fought. What a waste of Human life! The conflicts in the Balkans were to rage on for another 80 years and are still simmering to this day. What did this war solve?NOTHING!

  • @EliteGrenadier1 I don't think that the French or the British would be flattered to be in a brotherhood with you americans. Almost everyone in Europe hates you today.

  • @EliteGrenadier1 actually Philippe Pétain and Douglas Haig both stated that they were on the verge of a armistice with the germans and were thinking of calling it quits untill the americans entered the war. although the americans did not hold the most of the front they gave the war weary france and britian a boost of rejuvination and hope they could still win . that comes withhout saying the united states built bearly any of there tanks or airplanes so really we all won it.

  • Those men were learning, got a farm or something. Then get picked out to be a soldier so they can wait in a trench for when they can run out of the trench to get shot almost immediately...

  • perfect song absolutly

  • Amazing song, will definitely buy

  • beautiful song

  • If this interests anyone please see my spoken word piece on the Christmas Truce between the Allied and German soldiers on my channel :)

  • we gorkalis fought the 1st great war ad ww2...we are still fighting in iraq afganisthan........we even had a bloody civil war in our own country its nepal by the way if somebody starts wondering...never had war in our country except when he british tried to conquer us and failed to do so.............what i want to say is war sucks ....our brothers are fighting wars thats not even cocerned to our cause ..people are forced to fight..thats not their cause that sucks and thats what war is ...lol

  • 1:56 germans, helping a french out of a shellhole. seems like nearly the end of the war.

  • @BigMek456

Germans are not the monsters most people may think :-/

  • @Wookienator101 weiß ich doch =)

  • Probably been posted before: but thanks Canada, Aussie, Kiwi, Indian, etc.

  • nice panning at 3:08

is he running with that big ol camera?

  • when you see millions of the mouthless dead across your dreams in pale battalions go

say not soft things as other men have said

that youll rememeber for you need not so

give them not praise for deaf how should they know

  • @goj09dale by Charles Sorley, very nice. Thanks

  • @mower my pleasure its always good to share some of the most poignant yet forgotten literature from that most blessed and cursed period of time. in england only the older people remember and especially few of my own generation the sacrirfice that these great nd noble people made.

  • @goj09dale

    Nice poem, Mr. go.

  • Just let us never forget the cruelty of both World Wars. This is something that never can be forgotten and it should never happen again.

  • John McCrae, May 1915 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: ...
  • One of the stupidest wars ever fought. Just a buch of powerful countries fighting for more power ($). Germany was not the sole guilty, everyone there was eagger for a war, everybody is the guilty. And I don't mean innocent poeple who died there, just the politic forces that lead to this catastroph!

  • @zedasilva3 I am a student of history and have never been ever able to figure out the purpose of WWI other than to prop up the egos of the European aristocracy of the times. If there was any good that did come out of WWI is that it spelled the end of those aristocracies, but the unfortunate thing is that millions had to pay with their lives to do it. As for why Germany was punished? Spoils always go to the victor!

  • @juniorspivey That's pretty much what I wanted to say, but it seems that some coutries are proud of war, don't ask me why, so I tried not to be harsh. But you said it all. War sucks, no matter what.

  • @zedasilva3 (of course I don't mean wars for freedom, like the American Revolution or the Arab Spring, or the militias against the Brazilian Military Dictatorship ( which was sponsored by the American government, military speaking). Unfortunately, sometimes using weapons is the ONLY resource, and it must be used just in the last possible case, when innocents' lives are threatened. Even that way, war sucks.

  • The first day of battle at The Somme, 55,000 lives were snuffed out.. I don't know why the Generals were never punished for their stupity.

  • @Hairbanger24 The Generals had to do what they did to win the war. it is easy to look back and call them stupid, but they had to make decisions that you would not even be able to imagine

  • fdsfdsf

  • its so sad how they didnt give a rats ass about there man! wow omg , ugh , makes me sick!!!

  • @texasheat254 Uh,there were well over 100,000 dead on that battlefield.Do you think the troops had time to tend to their dead comrades??They had to continue the battle in front of them and the dead were looked after when the fighting moved past them. The Somme was the ultimate meat grinder, look it up,it will amaze you.....

  • those poor bastards on both sides. what a madness. i wanna thank our soldiers that lived through this hell and stood there strong and brave although outnumbered 5:1.

  • Belgium is a small country and will never mean the same to the world like England or France, but I'm proud to say that I'm a Belgian when I'm watching this. Our country got pretty much destroyed during that war and my family comes from the regions where they fought. RIP to all the soldiers who gave their life for Europe.

  • the correct meaning on italian traslate: " un infausto dispendio di risorse e vite senza pari in inutilità "

For italian is easier english than american to understand...

  • @mower thanks...i try to listeng several times but the pronunciation it's hard to understand....i always thought that english was easier than american but Wiston spoke quickly or maybe dialect/slang

  • @renzosful: I am an American and sometimes I have trouble understanding the English. And that always strikes me as funny.

  • @mower He'd have known too...trying to force the Dardenelles with the navy, Gallipolii, Battle of Jutland...no wonder he was chased out of Britain in huge disgrace after WWI

  • @renzosful "una spesa abbandonato di valore e di vita senza eguali in futilità" the closest translation I can find.

  • I have learned much of the Battles faced by the ANZACS, (Australians and New Zealanders), and so often, there was mention of the Canadians, and I have in my own generation with my own eyes seen the loyalty and camaraderie of the Canadians, on April 25th when Australia and New Zealand takes time to remember our fallen and our returned service men and women, I take time to remember the Canadians who have so often answered the calls and fought along side us. Thank You/Merci au Canada

  • @bardsidhe yeah they are the salves and the maids of the british empire.
