  • why the fuck is skrillex on a commercial

  • That was so damn beautiful my eyes watered, it looks like david was struggling and holding back tears at some part because he knows this song was syd barretts cry for help, this cover shows a lot of emotions and it really is powerful. Syd was a genius, I don't care what anybody says shine on you, crazy diamond.

  • I am very happy that Dave and Roger

keep Syd in the band like they do.

  • I thought it was'brandish a wand with a feathery tong' - whatever that means....

  • it is not a cry for help, it is a song about a cry for help -- that is the kinda things unmusical people always confuse

  • @MoveOverCasanova if you don't think that syd was writing about himself in this song, you're wrong.

  • @magua4 so you know what was on his mind when he wrote that? or what he wanted people to believe was on his mind...songwriting is a sport for the pros you know, sometimes at least - and syd barrett was a pro without any doubt, however fucked up he may have been

  • Grande Gilmour e grandíssimo Syd!

  • опопсил...

  • What a load of bollox.......Syd did what he did to himself. He made his choices, so he's got himself to blame.

Singing about asking for help is one thing, actually asking your mates face to face is another.

I miss him dearly, and always will.

  • I feel bad for Syd, this song sounds as tho he's screaming for help and nobody saved him, nobody was listening to what he was trying to tell them.

  • It´s sad and beautiful

  • this is so sad

  • my throat is crampling when listening to this :`(

    we miss you !

  • Thank you David....thank you...

  • I cried too.... Esp at 1:19

Don't really understand why... I think it's an incredible sadness thinking of Syd

And a timeless tribute here by an old friend

  • @normanite I cried at 1:19 it looks like he's about to cry he can't take anymore.

  • So beautiful...Dave sounds like hes going to break out in tears any moment...

  • this is after Syd`s death?

  • @k0stil First show after his death.

  • Love how he changed up at the note at 1:21....beautiful tribute

  • @jwild611 One of those beautiful subtle gilmourish effects, love it.

  • beautiful

  • GREAT

  • Brings tears to see this. I love Syd so much and I know David does too!

  • i was there...klam castle austria:-)

  • syd's songs are difficult to play, not just for the chords

  • @overban888 why are they difficult to play?

  • @GuitarMasterizer are you a smart guy? listen to them carefully. Syd Barrett was a painter and more had a kind of theatrical attitude while singing and playing. To say, it's something more than tunes. He was very irregular, technically

  • @overban888 In response to your question, yes I actually am very intelligent (was one grade away from getting straight A's) and have done a lot of research on Pink Floyd and David Gilmour. However, I haven't learned everything yet. I'm still learning about Syd so don't eat me alive over my last comment. It was just a question. :D

  • Wow! That one hit me to the core! Beautiful!

  • Did he played this song the moment he heard about Syd died?Cheers

  • although i enjoy Syd singing this song, david gilmour does a fine job performing this tune. The emotion is there and you can feel it.

  • eh poor gilmour lost his two best friends, i bet rick and syd were his best friends, it was gilmour who helped syd the most, anyway R.I.P my friends R.I.P RICHARD WRIGTH AND SYD BARRET :/ you'll alwayse be missed :s

  • well said my friend dave and richard never rorgot syd...im sure roger never forgot him too...i never met him and im 40 and i cant forget him...RKB RIP x

  • This is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I just KNOW that ♥Syd♥ LO♥ES IT!!!!

  • Maybe this will sound piegas but I am certain that Syd is really proud of this tribute!

  • A wonderful tribute

  • the best next to syd

  • The camera angles on this filming are annoying: back left, back right, and straight ahead ad nauseam. Given the stark nature of this song (at least the decision on black and white was on the money) you'd think the choice for a single angle straight ahead shot would have been obvious,

This is a great version of heartbreaking song, preferable to the original but not as moving as the alternate take posted by Beechwoodsilaslang.

  • :'( too

  • Been following Floyd for 40 yrs +, and to be honest, I feel sad at the loss of Syd, but floyd definitely would'nt have been anywhere as good without Dave, the greatest lead guitarist of all time. Others had the same ability perhaps, but none put over the feeling and emotion into their music. Think about it eh?

  • Fair point

listening to Atom heart mother at the moment

    here in NJ

  • JoeChrisMorris, Alo Mate, Thanks for comment, as you might appreciate, Syd was a bit 'Too far out 'for the majority of Floyd lovers, and to be totally honest, I include myself. DG gave the band more. I believe their popularity with the 'masses', started with Dark Side Of The Moon, Their music before that restricted them to a much smaller following. But now I truly believe that some of their music will eventually be considered to be included in the 'Real Classical Music' category.

  • this off the Remember that night

    dvd?

Dave's really good at covering Syd. Good covers of Dominoes and Terrapin in the past. He could do a decent tribute album

  • this is from Live in Gdansk

  • This is on the bonus features of Remember that Night.

  • Everybody always insults David because he replaced Syd but he helped Syd out more than any of the other members of the band. I think he felt bad about taking Syd's place even though it wasn't his fault, in fact I don't think it was anybody's fault, things just happened.

  • Amen

Gilmour is a genious,he only wanted to help his friend Barret

  • genius*

  • @Cgrrp

he even produced his solo albums and played on them

  • @Cgrrp Man, your 100% right. And In fact, I think David loved so much syd that even when he sangs his music live, he feels a little sad and happy about remebering old times with the crazy diamond

  • this was problay very hard for david too do he lost a good and loved friend of his he was the only who kept contact with syds family and news about his condition so david is the worlds kindest gentlemen

  • you wanna a bet nordpil97 coz this man is worth billions maybe trillions

  • i'm betting on trillions

  • Sung like a true Pink Floyd boy... I wish he'd grow his hair..

  • You don't have to post that coment in every video you find.

  • 1:37 watch Davids fingers.

Man, I love this song so much. The lyrics are kinda funny, but Syd was kind've a funny guy.

  • Uhh..he has every right to perform it, Syd died the night before on this show.

  • I love how raw this performance is, it comes straight from the heart and that's what makes it even more special.

  • dios que maravilla, sublime interpretacion y esta cancion es tan..

  • This was beautiful!

  • ive tattered my brain on the way...

  • five stars

  • that was a fucking outstanding performance

  • Beautiful.

  • Roger Waters is making a Final Cut

    David Gilmour is Comfortably Numb

Richard Wright is ringing the Division Bell

Syd Barrett is a Crazy Diamond

Nick Mason is on the Dark Side Of The Moon

  • the most part of lead vocals of Waters come from this song of syd, just listen the album final cut and you will see waht I'm talking about!

  • as you get older you can really appreciate the quality of Syd's songs and how each one of them makes you feel something. There really is something magical about his tunes. David covers Syd best.

  • I thought it was 'brandish' not 'tarnish'? Gilmour really does a great job. Its hard for me to listen to anyone cover Syd Barrett (it just sounds fake when they do it) but David does Syd's songs as himself and thats the honest way.

  • it is, dave aint perfect.

  • Life has been tough. I don't cry easy anymore. I cried hearing this. Many things fade away,Syd remains, frozen in time, shine on Syd, shine on.

  • :(

I wish they got together one last time and made a tribute album to Syd!

  • shine on you crazy diamond... we willi never forget u syd...

  • this makes me cry

  • Why is dave not putting out an album of only Syd stuff? Man , i would love that!

  • miss you syd, Great perfomance gilmour

  • A great tribute to Syd by a great man :) On the DVD documentary Gilmour said that he didn't want to rehearse or practice this song either.

  • what's the name of that dvd, please? cant finf it anywhere...

  • It's called 'Remember That Night: David Gilmour Live At The Royal Albert Hall'

  • thanx :)

  • we all miss you Syd. we'll miss you forever. thank you for your music...

    I can't stop crying :(

  • wow...i cried. don't know why.

  • syd, we miss you :(

  • I look up to David Gilmour.

    Seriously.

Not only is he an outstanding musician and arranger, he has become for me the perfect definition of a seemingly long lost style of English gentleman . . . well spoken, excellent sense of presence, praise for his peers, an amazing sense of modesty, and an undying devotion to friends (i.e. Syd, who he always made sure he received his royalty cheques and still honours his music to this day, along with Richard Wright's).

If only Waters treated him better...

  • You stole the words right out of my mouth!! I couldn't agree with you more, well said. :)

  • well we all miss SYD

  • Respect for Mr Gilmour

the way he respect Syd so much

  • how much have you given to charity?

  • daves voice is great, so soulful and bluesy

  • wow you must have no i do where or who you are

  • beutifulll song.. and great performance by David...

im thinking about Syd's talent... and so sad that he didn´t made mutch more songs :(

  • Absolutely beautiful. This made me cry :'(

  • holly shit!!! that was amazing, never seen that before, CHEERS!!!

  • You cannot go around shooting people who dont give money to charity! Fuck Me! You would have to shoot more than half the population of the globe.

  • I'm pretty sure everyone that knows and respected Syd for what he was, misses him.

  • hmm yeah i guess your right but it dosent really feel good for mark david chapman since hes resposible for shooting john lennon. i mean he has been in the slammer for 29 years now and should of been released 9 years ago. but lennon's dumbass asian wife prevented this.

  • David Gilmour's voice is the perfect finishing touch to this beautiful song.

  • make me cry

    I miss syd

    fuckin genius

    fuck off

    yeah Im high

  • brilliant!

  • this reminds me of mother and pigs on the wing...kinda

  • well those chords are the same that pigs on the wing and mother =P

  • Soo great..genial

  • Syd's version is WAY better. But at least it isnt being performed by roger waters.

That is an example of someone who fucked syd over pretty good.

  • I'd blame drugs.

  • drugs didnt fuck syd barret over read a biography

  • i think he was talking about rogers voice and not syd

  • syds head was mashed on acid and mandrax, roger cudnt take it any more as he wanted the band to be more professional an not have the lead singer and guitarist staring blankly off stage not knowing where he was.

  • such a humanitarian that waters

  • I would argue that they "tattooed his brain all the way." but that's just my opinion.

I liked his music better when he was on drugs so who cares really? :)

  • This song gives me chills down my spine and digs out some very deep unidentifiable emotions inside me - probably sums up an aspect of Syds music...

  • David was a drummer on Barrett, I think he played on Dominoes.

  • It sucked.

  • grande gilmour

    barrett arribita

  • For the record Gilmour played this without even having practiced it in the studio.

First time out. He talks about it on the "Remember that Night" DVD.

So if there are imperfections I say good, for that's the way Gilmour would have wanted it.

I mean, this is the same man who, after not playing "On the Turning Away" since 1994 (at the most recent!) suddenly and unexpectedly starting playing it on the 2006 completely unbeknownst to his bandmates.

Even he struggled but it was masterful!

  • it wouldn't have been a fitting tribute to syd if it'd been heavily rehearsed, too.

  • I think Gilmour played On the Turning Away at the Prince's trust concert in 1996 or so, but still a ten year break between playing it live and randomly playing it is impressive. The imperfections in the the performance of Dark Globe are what makes it perfect IMHO. That was the brilliance of Syd's solo efforts.

  • Great version

  • Excellent, Fred ;-)

  • Gilmour's version is fantastic, and partly because of the "mistakes". there's a kind of strong energy that comes from his perfonrmance, hard to define, easy to feel and understand.

    absolutely touching.

  • Syd would have found an exquisiteness in the imperfections of David's rendition.

  • after all he is syds best friend

  • syd would be proud of you!... great job dave

  • He doesnt like being referred to as "Dave" :>

But yes indeed, its truly beautiful

    Good work, Gilmour :)

  • nice cover

  • love the little mistake at 1:37

  • a previous mistake of chords at 1:00, it does not seems one, but it is.

  • On the Remember that Night DVD I believe David admits to playing the song without rehearsing it.

  • Only Gilmour can make a mistake that's barely audible lol.

  • You're right about this. To me that makes this rendition even more impressive. The feeling coupled with the spontaneity only adds to Gilmour's legend IMHO.

  • i'm pretty sure lot's of people miss you dearly syd.

  • soul

  • I believe this came out on a David Gilmour cd (Arnold Layne) single also

  • He Is The Best !

  • amazing

  • I miss syd :(

    nice cover

  • what can i say eddie just the best

  • AWESOME vocalist

    and

    THE BEST Guitarist on EARTH

  • i love this song

  • it is sad to see a friend being destroyed by drugs, i have that experience.Sadly Barret was a victim of the nieve ignorance of his entire generation, that makes him a martyr but not a genious. The fact is that he couldnt be able to develop his talent to that level like the other band members and its ridiculous that people praise him like some kind of musical hero or god. He was a leading figure, a very cherised friend and a strongly charismatic character, but not a great songwriter or musician.

  • OH i certainly agree there, you have a very objective point indeed...

  • The point is this , Syd was was not only the influence of his band mates, but of a hole generation of song writers, only to rivaled by a few. He is the true meaning of an artist. He totally stood on that side of the line, and not at all the side of fame and fortune. RIP ANGEL BOY...

  • Well not exactlly because he wasn't intending fame and fortune. If he didnt wanted to be a rockstar, what was he doing in EMI, recording in the Abbey Road studios? I bet he did read his contract before he signed it. I also say a little something got in the way of his comercial sucess, in the very early days of his short career. I'm sure most people here knows the story: too much LSD, severe brain damage and an early retirement of the music business. Is that the true meaning of an artist?...

  • He still had to eat. I think you should do more research on Syd Barrett, and you'll see he was a very shy person with other personal problems. Things I don't want to get into, that when couple together with acid, had a damaging effect

on his body, spirit and mind. He had transformed physically soon after his melt down. 20% of his work is the latest Pink Floyd cd box set. Check it out.

  • abstract

  • Ever read any lyrics have you? or poetry? If you can see beyond the news of the world take on his life( drugs, madness, tragic ect ect ) His arrangments on his solo albums could have been better but lyrically they are poetry. David Gilmour has done a wonderful job with this song. I would like to see a whole album of syds songs done by David Gilmour. Now that would be special.

  • Gilmour always does a great job. He has covered lots of Syd songs like Terrapin, Dominoes, this one Dark Globe, Astronomy Domine, etc. Yeah he should release a compilation of his tribute work to Syd. The songs sound so much better in his voice and arrangement.

  • I agree with you 100%.

David Gilmour has lent so much credence and value to Syd's songs.

I think a compilation of Gilmour's work on Syd's songs would be an amazing tribute!

  • Agree on the compilation, but sure wouldnt go as far as to say they would sound better in Davids voice- thats just silly.. Syds voice matched his lyrics perfetly, and your being silly again as usual.

Hey- if I sent you $500, would you stop posting on all the Syd related threads? Im very serious too.. Im just so sick of seeing you trash this man, over and over.. Heck, seeing all the arguements you started on all the Syd videos? Id probably be able to raise alot more than $500 to rid you..

  • What the heck are you speaking about???

    ?????

    Trash Syd???

When and how have I trashed Syd?

You are seriously confused, have mistaken my identity, or have somehow ascertained that this one song I like that Gilmour covers somehow means I don't like Syd.

My friend, Syd was gone from Floyd before the 70s began, entirely of his own volition. Gilmour had nothing to do with it. The Gilmour era was a completely different era, no comparisons necessary.

Again, you have seriously mistaken me.

  • Whether you like PF better before Syd's departure (like me) or after has nothing to do with respecting the man who started it all for all of them.

  • Now...where is Roger Waters tribute????

  • I think Roger Waters has done quite a good and extensive job on tributing himself, so no need for external tributes yet.

  • This is quite beautiful, a great tribute to Syd barrett from David gilmour. Syds producer and replacment in floyd...a glimmer of what could be possible with Syds wonderfull songs. barrett and Gilmour would have been dream collaboraters.. in an ideal world.

  • And how do you know that a butterfly is evolved from a caterpillar? They're nothing alike except that they're insects. You can argue about it all you want, it isn't going to change anyone's opinion here seeing as how people on the internet are so stubborn.

Idea: Stop arguing about it and just enjoy the music.

  • David and Syd were good friends, and I think it's right to say that Pink Floyd wouldn't have gotten as far as they did without either of the two. Saying that Gilmour is the sound of Floyd is ignorance. Up until The Wall they formed a sound that evolved from Syd's. It's only natural that Gilmour or Waters may want to pay tribute to him.

Please, Syd is gone and we all miss him. Don't you think it's better that his friends are paying tribute to him instead of no one at all?

  • how do you know is evolved from syds sound...DSOTM isnt like syds sound at all

  • See? It's comments like this that Syd fans don't understand. All Core010 is saying is that Gilmour is playing a Syd song, which is better than nobody playing a Syd song. PF would never have gotten a record contract in the first place if not for Syd BArrett's original cache of songs. This stated fact takes nothing away from Daivd Gilmour or any other member of PF. All PF fans should be grateful to Barrett--without him, the world may never have heard of PF.

  • The man has a point, i would say Syd created Floyds "early" sound, but they went trough many phases in their career, early post-barret releases are quite different from PATGOD, The 70's sound is also a very different thing (the best for my taste) and then The Wall and Final cut sounded like nothing they did before; and even then with rogers departure, The Gilmour era is another whole deal.

  • Another thing, many people think Syd Barrets guitar style inffluenced David Gilmour's. Its actually the other way around: Gilmour taught Syd most of his guitar tricks back in the old Cambridge Art School days when they were very close friends. So in a way, the statement about Gilmour being the source isnt that ignorant after all. There are plenty of testimonies that confirm this fact including Barret's.
