Poor DeSouza can argue for the possible existence of god (ie wishful thinking), but he's still left there holding his micro-duck in his hand, without the possibility of actually proving his premise.

But a simple statement like your statement would have no trouble figuring this out. LOL
Htichen's defeats his own defense for free will by advocating killing as an acceptable reaction against monotheism, which is totalitarian by nature, and inhibits free will. He has imposed his own version of totalitarianism and is restricting free will by claiming that a person may choose freely anything other than monotheism. The other option: choose monotheism and be killed justly.
if we are so free then how come we go to hell if we dont believe in what he says? dinesh is just plain stupid. an intelligent person would never make such a statement.
@dramageddon Typical atheist kook - Your Slothful Induction is meaningless in the scientific as well as the logic arena. Maybe you should pick up a physics textbook sometime before running off at the mouth with diarrhea again.
So D(ouche)'Souza's final statement is to say that without the benevolent direction of the christian god he is an morally confused animal with no consciousness, i.e. he would kill and steal without a thought to the second? More so, he is professing that he didn't even read all Christopher's book because this accusation is prevalent in it. Obviously this is an atheist's main attack on the religious: does a person by default really need to be INSTRUCTED on individual rights?
Yes, Dinesh, you can tell a cheetah not to chase a rabbit, just not using human language. That's just how dogs, cats, monkeys and many other animals have been tamed.
"freedom where you can say no to GOD" ... except that when you say no to GOD you will burn in hell for eternity. Doesn't it remind you of a dictatorship? Example, living under Husain's rule. You say yes to Husain you life is spared, but when you say no, he hangs your ass. Is that really freedom?
It's like you're standing out in the cold being invited to a warm house by a guy you hate and you decline by saying "no! i won't go in there because I hate him! either he goes out and lets me in, or I will stay here and die of cold!"
I highly doubt D'Souza's intelligence - just very much so. He seems deluded with the fact that our "sad" world is littered with "secular empires" and is so immature and whining in his rebuttals - what the "fuck" is up with his whimpering tone when addressing arguments counter to his own? His desperate lemur-like mental musings reek of potholes and blatant rationalization.
@jerryhello100 It's like training a dog and when another dog comes up to fight with you, "Let's just see how he handles himself. Give the dog free will'. Which for the owner of the dog a little immoral but not completely nuts. Then when you add Satin into the picture suddenly, "Oh a Mountain Lion is loose in our back yard."
"Hmmm, let's just see how our dog ends up. He brought it upon himself for being born, after all"
I reject D'Souza's claim that God, if he exists, could possibly have given us Free-will because God also claims to know everything about us, and everything that we will ever do. So if God does exist, the christian one, it is like Dinesh says: we are robots. Because if god made knowing what we would choose, then that is not a choice, it's pre-scripted.
kamuss11.hell, heaven and the specifics of the life hereafter is a christian and other claim, judaism doesn't pretend to know. In fact you get no special rewards for being a jew, a good person is on par for any potential rewards. Take a guess why there aren't many jews. All the effort, none of the rewards besides a knowledge that everyone after is following your design. Take a guess why successor religions must eliminate or convert jews to be correct. Hitchens is by far my favorite debater.
God made man free to do that. From where does this assertion come ? Was definition of god made by human or did god (any god) send their definition thorough their Prophets? if so is there a slightest evedence??
To elaborate that point a little bit further, many may refute the notion of free-will, as Dinesh mentioned, as our decisions are the result of accumlated experience up until every-single decision. Hence, a deterministic universe- one that inherents incontestable physical laws. It can be conclusively noted that our brain is robustly complicated, however, it still abides by physical law- the most rudimentary form of scientific substantiation.
@alltiedup217 Like previously talking about the Crusades, "Why is everyone making such a big deal about this... Only a couple thousand innocence people died. Gawd, always picking on us Christians. You atheists are so mean!"
Hitchens totally carves up D'souza towards the end of the clip, then D'souza, the fucktard, falls back on his psuedo scientific dribble again. The man couldn't even answer a direct question.
D'Souza suggests taking a moment to consider the power behind the FACT that humans are "the only" animals to possess free will.
It took about two seconds to think of a dog laying on a railroad track with a train bearing down. I think the dog will move, but then that means the dog has a god too.
I knew it! Dog god! More than just palindromic! It's been proved! Praise Canus born of the virgin bitch!!
Wow . . . dude . . . seriously . . . ask your question and get on with it. I know you have a point to make, probably several, and I feel for you because I would LOVE to have a stab at that debate, but its a question your supposed to ask, not a ten minute point as though you were a member of the debate.
I've always been puzzled by the explanation of the self-appointed experts that god made us free to choose...to choose between what? Between worshipping him and spending eternity in hell? Some choice. It's the same kind of choice as when a thug asks "your money or your life". The fact that they had to invent hell is one of the most repulsive things about christianity for me.
Where do we get our free will? Wow? Evolution, bigger brain, consciousness? Look at our ancestors and you will surely see am evolution of mentality and emotion. Maybe Dinesh should read and watch some of Richard Dawkins.
That guy is surprised that Dinesh doesn't know about India? Of course he doesn't talk about it, he's a self-hating Indian-American desperate for the accepting embrace of white upper class America.
If I have the freedom to deny god then why am I being sent to hell for doing so? That isn't "freedom" if I'm being punished for exercising my freedom.
What is the source of this (compassion/morality)? - Dinesh
Neurology is the source of morality and it is NOT exclusive to our species. Other mammals have certainly demonstrated many of the components of moral decision making. Dinesh is SO quick to jump on people for talking apart from their field of expertise, and then demonstrates breathtaking ignorance and arrogance on the topic of morality.
Hitchens, again, brings up a good point, but I wish he would have elaborated on it further. If free will is given by a creator, or CAUSED by a creator then it suffers a fate of determinism. What determines the strength of free will to accept good and reject evil or vice versa is dependent on how much strength is given it. Where does this strength or weakness come from? Well like all inventions that have a designer, its strength or weakness must come from its designer. Hence God is at fault.
D'Souza says that in Christianity, God made us free to choose our own path, and therefore it is not totalitarian. However, in totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany or Stalin's Soviet Union, one was also FREE to choose to go against the state. However, the consequence of that action was death or imprisonment. In like manner Christianity imposes coercion, but it is even worse. If you choose not to follow its dictates you will suffer eternal torment. It is totalitarianism of the worst kind.
D'Souza, even in his examples of Genghis Khan and the Roman Empire, blatantly IGNORES the fact that in both cases you have a conquering people who believed that it was their DIVINE DESTINY to subjugate people. So even in D'Souza's poorly chosen examples, religion is a contributing factor. Also what his examples demonstrate, is that religion doesn't have a mitigating effect on genocidal behavior, they way one would think it should have.
Islamic Empire was much more tolerant than all predecessor empires that is Historical fact. Islam has the power of converging and was tolerant because of preaching that gave enemies chance to be muslim istead of ethnic cleasing like roman empire and Macedonian Alexander "so called" great wiped out entire cities and killed its people Islam was able to succeed winning the war by converging enemies to Islam without lots of shed of blood
It is a very disputed fact... The status of dhimmis was not a very envious one. Islam also had its claim in religious cleansing and forced conversions. Moreover many great empires comprised many different ethnic groups and religion aswell. You should go back to history books. Finally, I don't see today that so-called muslim tolerance in Islamic countries ( Think of Saudi Arabia, Egypte, etc)
It is not Disputed, It is a FACT. The west fear of Muslims was partly ONE fear of the converging power and ethical superiority. TWO advancement of technology, science and language that Islam had. THREE ISLAM was and still is: the righteous, Victorious Winning revolution of the "weakened" nations against pre-taken-for-granted. Byzantine, Hellenistic, ROMAN and Other European dictatorships
The west has lots of weak "fault-points" that only Islam tackles. Many of them related to a dictatorship of Capitalism of consumer converging society that is marketed as "democratic" when this democracy has lots of criticism. At least Arab nations are resistant to homogeneous brutality of the brainwashing of the "capitalist-neo-slavery" of the society of which Atheism and agnosticism plays great part of it.
If people talked about religion like this without regard for stepping on believers' toes, it would be dissolved far quicker than is currently the case.
Cheetahs don't eat rabbits D'Souza... proving how LITTLE you know about the animal kingdom. Interesting, isn't it, that animals such as primates other than humans feel emotions similar to remorse, to regret, to sorrow. Yeah, D'Souza, animals feel. Isn't that odd? Are they, then, created special by god?
Every now and then, I step back from the fact that D'Souza and Hitchens are extremely well read and have researched their positions extensively, and remember that they're debating the existence of a being who listens to every prayer of every human, 24/7, who is undetectable, indefinable, exists on planes unfathomable to us, can create and destroy on any scale upon a whim, and who conveys his commandments verbally to lone people.
ho ho ho as in the supposed holiday spirt. no, I'm not racist. I've even had a black girlfriend for awhile. that was sarcastic. If you want to read a good take on race, read hitchen's letters to a young contrarian. i feel like i've read much more hitchens than you.
This nonsense of free will breaks down when you consider something like disease. Does someone choose cancer? Did millions of people choose to die of influenza in 1918? The Black Death? No. No one chooses that.
I suggest you follow your own advice. I guess this video must be attracting a lot of your brain-dead fellow faithheads, considering the negative five give to my comments. Only people like yourself, who would make Forrest Gump look like a candidate for Mensa, would disagree with what I said. I'd like to know what your specific objections are. Explain how free will is supposed to work. How would you refute what I have written? You can't do it; you're too stupid.
The level of religious fanaticism and willingness to be intellectually dishonest by militant Darwinist atheists like yourself is only matched by that of extreme Islam from what I can see.
The effort you cowards put in to bitterly censor and squelch opposing thought couldn't be more obvious and only someone with the same zeal and agenda or half a brain would ignore it.
Do you have a specific question about free will that Dinesh didn't cover for you?
Pathetic. You haven't watched the video or read any of the comments here. It's especially lame to attempt to answer a question with a question. Dinesh's answer to the question of free will was no answer at all, and you are totally incapable of doing any better - obviously. Goodbye, fool.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Run along, coward...
By chance, are you the doofus from the audience at the beginning of this clip who called Dinesh a liar when he didn't like the answer? Lol, just a hunch...
Continue to hide behind the anonymity of the internet, observer75. What is your real name? You are the coward. Few will have failed to notice that you have not attempted to refute anything I have said. You have failed to give me any reason to think you have watched this video or are familiar with any of the arguments put forth by Hitchens or D'Souza. You have not read my comments either. I fail to see why I should waste any more time on someone so dishonest and so lazy.
Quit now. You regree further with each comment. Perhaps if you ceased to hide behind the veil of anonymity you would be less willing to constantly play the fool. You obviously have a very low opinion of yourself, to be willing to degrade yourself in this way.
Yes, yes... I know how cowards like you wish I would quit. Censorship is your way, coward. That is why all of you seethe over these debates. Read up and down the comments for all of these videos and you'll see a bunch of seething cowards upset at Dinesh and anyone else who challenges the status quo.
I changed my mind, I don't want you to quit. Morons like you are just too damn entertaining. Any time you'd like to attempt to provide any reasons and evidence as to why I'm wrong in my total smackdown of D'Souza's sad arguments, feel free. Don't think that other observers haven't noticed you have failed to do this.
I suspect your age is somewhere between 10 and 12, your emotional maturity roughly 2. You react when like a cornered animal when challenged. You are out of your league and you know it. You are a base coward, *still* hiding (cowering like a frightened child) behind your veil of anonymity. You are pathetic. You do not know the meaning of the words "reason" and "logic", never mind how to use them in an argument.
You are also abysmally lazy, and have obviously *still* not watched this video, and know nothing of the arguments of either man in this debate. You keep getting thrashed, but you keep coming back. You may be entertaining, but the joke is getting old. Run away now, little boy.
lol :D interesting strategy to legitimate your own position through assuming there is a vast conspiracy against you, rather produce a rational argument.
I'll ignore your little smart-ass jibes thanks. According to a poll in 1987, around 0.14% of life scientists in the US believed in evolution, so close enough 99.86% as a direct measure of the trend since 1987. Across the globe today, the figure is closer to my estimate, especially in western Europe.
The data suggests that those educated in the sciences are about a thousand times less likely than the average member of the American public to believe in creationism. (or be a smart-ass)
As I said, you appeal to conspiracy, rather than produce a rational argument. It was almost like I prophecised it, but then that would be irrational... wouldn't it?
If you clowns were so confident in your beliefs you wouldn't have any problem with opposing ideas. But like all cowards and tyrants, you try to censor, censor, censor. I'm sure that you, like most of your comrades regard Dinesh with hostility, thinking to yourselves arrogantly, "The audacity of this man challenging the status quo!".
Not particularly, his arguments have all been answered by Hitchens on a number of similar occasions. What brings the hostility is the fact people cheer D'Souza's ideas, and a backward step is made for what are in fact incredibly irrational arguments.
I find your opinion that all of Dinesh's arguments were answered by Hitchens to be false and I would add the same of his answers.
People cheering "D'Souza's ideas" shouldn't make you hostile unless you feel threatened, but I'm glad you have admitted to hostility. That's the first step to recovery.
Also, your implication that D'Souza's ideas are "incredibly irrational arguments" is your own empty and useless opinion unless you would like to point out a specific that we can dissect logically.
"but I'm glad you have admitted to hostility. That's the first step to recovery."
What... you mean like: "If you clowns" "like all cowards and tyrants," "What would you internet automatons do without your circle jerk meccas?" "empty and useless opinion"
Heal thyself because you are a patronising and bitter hypocrite.
I've lost my appetite for any issues I would debate, you are clearly a vulgar and immature individual, and I won't indulge your need for attention.
Run along, little girl. You never had any intention to debate, give me a break. You came to bash Dinesh because he threatens or questions your ideals.
I don't have any problem matching your hostility in whatever form you present it. You, like most of your comrades, have a tyrannical personality disorder and I delight being in your face to answer back.
There that immaturity again. I had no doubt you would take some narcissistic delight in seeing my retreat from a discussion, ignoring the fact it is because I think you are an insulting child.
I won't satisfy your further thirst for attention, so don't bother revelling in answering back because I will not lower myself to even read it. Byebye.
If we have free-will off god then the christians, muslims, jews and so on would not have to stone people to death. Does this mean that any christian/other person who punishes anyone in any way for not being religious is actually stepping on the toes of gods word? answers on a post card please.
It's about time someone tick off Dinesh's bluff which he so often did in his other debates. This probably prompted Peter Singer to quip that he enjoys debating Dinesh because he likes to go yak yak yak yak ..... unabashedly.
Not to mention Hitchen's basic argument isn't that God doesn't exist or couldn't exist but that God shouldn't exist.
He lists all the characteristics about God he finds offensive such as God being omnipresent and omniscience and counts it as a strike against God. Trying to define God out of existance.
It went both ways in many of their debates. When you debate, you use whatever means to prove your point, often painting the other person an idiot. The end justifies the means in this case.
didn't want to be a smart ally, what I meant was simply this: Yes the amazing thing about the universe is exactly that it is "merely physical and driven by physical laws". The equation that D'Souza makes is that it is therefore deterministic, which it is not. Quantum physics introduced the fundamental concept of probability into physics, and altough we do know a whole lot about these probablities it is far off from e.g. Laplace's Demon or the worldview of Newton. D'Souza lives in the 19th cent.
"If the laws of physics are completely deterministic in another words if we live in a physical universe that is merely physical and driven by physical laws..."
Ok, he has never read a book on modern physics neither otherwise he would not make this claim that nobody literate in the realm of quantum physics would say is true.

He brought it upon himself for being born, after all"
... what the hell???

Taking the word "could" as a predicate of "free will" I suppose the question becomes if the dog could "could" would he "could?"
And if he did "could" would he have done the "could" like he should (in the eyes of the lord.)
I mean, if a dog would "could"
would he "could" the way a good "could" should?
Amen.

D'Souza suggests taking a moment to consider the power behind the FACT that humans are "the only" animals to possess free will.
It took about two seconds to think of a dog laying on a railroad track with a train bearing down. I think the dog will move, but then that means the dog has a god too.

I've always been puzzled by the explanation of the self-appointed experts that god made us free to choose...to choose between what? Between worshipping him and spending eternity in hell? Some choice. Dinesh is SO quick to jump on people for talking apart from their field of expertise, and then demonstrates breathtaking ignorance and arrogance on the topic of morality.
analubalitious 2 years ago 2
Hitchens, again, brings up a good point, but I wish he would have elaborated on it further. If free will is given by a creator, or CAUSED by a creator then it suffers a fate of determinism. What determines the strength of free will to accept good and reject evil or vice versa is dependent on how much strength is given it. Where does this strength or weakness come from? Well like all inventions that have a designer, its strength or weakness must come from its designer. Hence God is at fault.
alphacause 2 years ago 2
D'Souza says that in Christianity, God made us free to choose our own path, and therefore it is not totalitarian. However, in totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany or Stalin's Soviet Union, one was also FREE to choose to go against the state. However, the consequence of that action was death or imprisonment. In like manner Christianity imposes coercion, but it is even worse. If you choose not to follow its dictates you will suffer eternal torment. It is totalitarianism of the worst kind.
alphacause 2 years ago
D'Souza, even in his examples of Genghis Khan and the Roman Empire, blatantly IGNORES the fact that in both cases you have a conquering people who believed that it was their DIVINE DESTINY to subjugate people. So even in D'Souza's poorly chosen examples, religion is a contributing factor. Also what his examples demonstrate, is that religion doesn't have a mitigating effect on genocidal behavior, they way one would think it should have.

Islamic Empire was much more tolerant than all predecessor empires that is Historical fact. Islam has the power of converging and was tolerant because of preaching that gave enemies chance to be muslim istead of ethnic cleasing like roman empire and Macedonian Alexander "so called" great wiped out entire cities and killed its people Islam was able to succeed winning the war by converging enemies to Islam without lots of shed of blood
balamanti2 2 years ago
It is a very disputed fact... The status of dhimmis was not a very envious one. Islam also had its claim in religious cleansing and forced conversions. Moreover many great empires comprised many different ethnic groups and religion aswell. You should go back to history books. Finally, I don't see today that so-called muslim tolerance in Islamic countries ( Think of Saudi Arabia, Egypte, etc)
kramokinian 2 years ago

It is not Disputed, It is a FACT. The west fear of Muslims was partly ONE fear of the converging power and ethical superiority. TWO advancement of technology, science and language that Islam had. THREE ISLAM was and still is: the righteous, Victorious Winning revolution of the "weakened" nations against pre-taken-for-granted. Byzantine, Hellenistic, ROMAN and Other European dictatorships

"Muslim tolerance in Saoudi Arabia,

The west has lots of weak "fault-points" that only Islam tackles. Many of them related to a dictatorship of Capitalism of consumer converging society that is marketed as "democratic" when this democracy has lots of criticism. At least Arab nations are resistant to homogeneous brutality of the brainwashing of the "capitalist-neo-slavery" of the society of which Atheism and agnosticism plays great part of it.

If you clowns were so confident in your beliefs you wouldn't have any problem with opposing ideas. But like all cowards and tyrants, you try to censor, censor, censor. I'm sure that you, like most of your comrades regard Dinesh with hostility, thinking to yourselves arrogantly, "The audacity of this man challenging the status quo!".
observer75 2 years ago
Not particularly, his arguments have all been answered by Hitchens on a number of similar occasions. What brings the hostility is the fact people cheer D'Souza's ideas, and a backward step is made for what are in fact incredibly irrational arguments.
lonerook860 2 years ago
I find your opinion that all of Dinesh's arguments were answered by Hitchens to be false and I would add the same of his answers.
People cheering "D'Souza's ideas" shouldn't make you hostile unless you feel threatened, but I'm glad you have admitted to hostility. That's the first step to recovery.
Also, your implication that D'Souza's ideas are "incredibly irrational arguments" is your own empty and useless opinion unless you would like to point out a specific that we can dissect logically.

"but I'm glad you have admitted to hostility. That's the first step to recovery."

didn't want to be a smart ally, what I meant was simply this: Yes the amazing thing about the universe is exactly that it is "merely physical and driven by physical laws".
