I especially liked the MotorTrend article on the Chevy Volt...their article included the following paragraph: "Once the Volt’s battery is depleted, the engine fires up and clutches to the generator to produce the power required to drive the car. Above 70 mph, when the generator couples to the ring gear, the engine gets a more efficient direct mechanical connection to the wheels. "

I C "..kid" B making friends EVERYwhere. In fact, I have a B.S. in Engineering. My point was economic. GM likes the old business model because ICE's need regular maintenance and replacement parts. Hey, ask Exxon.
It's the carbon copied Multinational corporate "plan" and one need only understand growth, who gets stock options and the capital gains vs. wage tax rates. Re-repeat this "plan" and you get a profit pyramid, growth to market saturation and finally wage (and other expense) decreases.
Why would they use what looks like a standard Inernal Combustion engine @1:38 for recharging the batteries? I know that is what they make, but an ICE Is meant to run at different RPM settings, and provide torques at those speeds. A charger needs to run at a constant speed - seems and ICE is overdoing it, and the Re-charger could be much smaller.
@CI9TK Why would they use what looks like a standard Inernal Combustion engine? The answer is simple: because it is a standard Internal Combustion Engine and it is not a 'pure EV' car at all as Chevrolet claims it is. At speeds above 70 mph or after 20 miles will function as a normal hybrid car like the Prius. Only it does perform quite poorly at 6.9l/100 km (~34 mpg) while a standard hybrid like the Prius will achieve 58 mpg easily.
I like the way it looks but like a bit more fuel efficient.
Nissan already built a superior "eco" car. The upcoming Nissan Leaf gets an "equivalent" of 367 mpg, and it will be priced competitively with the Toyota Prius.
People who are interested in "eco" cars are unwilling to pay $40,000 for a Chevy Volt. Maintenance costs on the Volt will be high if the Volt is as reliable as past GM cars.
The VOLT-hoax is phony because GM is denying the real success of the EV1, and denigrating the FACTS that we found out: you don't need 500 miles range, but you DO need 100 miles range. GM had a 140 miles range EV1 15 years ago, and lies about it now.
you said it. the current hybrids have been on the streets longer and have proven themselves in extreme condition like heat and cold and steadily evolving. the volt hasn't been proven or tested.
it shows how desperate GM is trying to basically stay in business.
Do you know that they haven't tested the car in different extremes? Do you reallt know that? It's new, it will have bugs, that is part of the process. So many of you expect too much and are not realistic.
Wow, 60 mpg when you use gas alone with 12 gallons, that's pretty awesome. You wouldn't even have to charge it to be saving money, the environment, etc.
Wow, that guy did not want to be nailed down for saying it'd be out by 2011 lol.
cant people just connect a water bucket with battery cables to metal plates like millions of us see on you tube for years already? oops I forget, we want to much ready to go stuff, h h h
Who Cares about style? i Want a car that doesn't use gas. and can take me to and from work, the kids to and from school without any gas. Seem to me we already had that vehicle 13 years ago think about that instead of style.
most people have to work 5 days a week or more. I seriously doubt anyone drives further than 40 km to go to work. there was nothing wrong with the EV1.
Its like when video cassette recorders first came out the price was high but as more and more models came out the pieces went down and we got DVD and Blue Ray, as more Ion batteries are produced for more and more cars they will have on chose but to produce NiMH cells for cars. But we need to nurture the EREV market and let it grow.
People keep bashing GE for killing the EV but now they are building a good concept and people keep beating them down, I for one think that an extended range electric EREV is the way to go. We need to decouple the gas engine from the drive train. Only a few people will buy all electric cars because of the plug anxiety. We need this type of car from all of the auto makers; this will drive down the price and lead to a long range all electric car.
Who Cares about style? i Want a car that doesn't use gas. and can take me to and from work, the kids to and from school without any gas. Seem to me we already had that vehicle 13 years ago think about that instead of style.
Tamayo1980. The American People have there heads so far up there asses there is virtually no hope of pulling them out. People even in this economy are more concerned with fashion, the latest this's and thats then what makes sense. Instead of demanding solar power, Hybrids, E85s, they are simply more worried about there pretty roofs and wheels on there cars!!!! I live in Las Vegas NV, the city where we get the worst of all worlds...
The average American can convert a current mid-sized passenger vehicle to electric and get SIXTY TO EIGHTY miles in linked Li-On batteries (stored in trunk/backseat area), all done in their GARAGE. GM spends hundreds of millions and only manages 40 miles? Come on people. The new plants they're building for these and other lines are 400 million+ each; and guess who's money they're using to build them? YOURS! The 25 billion dollars. GM= Massive ignorance and failure.
Unlike a prius the Chevy Volt ONLY runs on battery power in the first 40 miles and will go 100mph the prius uses gas after 20mph so the Chevy is better and after 40miles driven the car still is electric but uses a gas motor to charge battery, again better than Prius, plus the Chevy just looks better.
The new 100% electric MINI has a 120mile range from it's lithium ion battery. It goes on sale in afew months!! What the hell is takeing G.M. so long!!
There are no savings with the Volt. The price is estimated at $40K to $48K. Automobile critics have dubbed it "Grandma's electric vehicle." The production Volt is hideous and bland. Nissan has already developed an electric car that gets TWICE the mileage as the Volt.
yeah, talk about a flop of a car before it even hit's the markets. this is a little californian's toy at best, and pointless projects like this are pushing the big 3 into the ground. They should go back to making cars that people will actually buy, not spending their money on publicity stunts.
so, the reason i'm asking is because if you use the battery to run the motors AND the heater (heaters eat a fuckload of power)then it cuts the hell out of your range. so what's the point to own one in the top third of the country?
Hmm...i dont know why everyone is so negative. The volt's a good idea. Its electric most of the time, 40 miles are enough. The Toyota prius is realy just a petrol car with a small battery, its almost pointless. The Toyota RAV4 EV and GM EV1 are too impracticle with battery only power...so the volt is the best compromise
now I live in the frozen over hell called minnesota, how does this thing make heat if it uses the electric motor most of the time. electric mototrs don't exactly put out the heat I need to keep my balls from freezing solid.
The VOLT is a HOAX. If GM were serious, it would at least stop telling untruths about the EV1, and stop suppressing volunteer engineers who restored museum copy EV1.
GOOD! I don't want to waste Fuel charging the battery while driving. Let the batteries wait until I can get hooked up to much cheaper power at home or work.
Yes, GM is completely stifled by modern American bureaucratic corruption, but at least give their engineers credit for creating a vehicle that could really make a difference in the environmental landscape, and pave the way for true EV's, instead of the "Hollywood image" lie that is the Prius. Read up on 80's GM management, and the EV1, you ignorant morons, and you will see what a miracle the EV1 was to have been born out of such corporate mediocrity.
Chevrolet G.M out sold any one all alone in the country, But most importantly lasts more years and resells for far more dollars, any years later.
It holds it values in any resale book references, the military shows GM vehicles do not even explode any where near as much as other vehicles in thousands of home made vids by our troops or as seen on live TV when going into Iraq a few years ago 24 hrs on TV. News crews lost lives proving that as 1 among facts too.
Why is it every time you see the Chevy Volt it is going really slow maybe it does not work or it will burn up again if they go faster, since the CEO said that they had thermal events with the Volt, mean it burnt up people, if you do not believe me watch the CNN news report "We Were Warned", its about the oil criticize in America!
The Volt and the fuel cell are the same they both don't work, this is a total scam from GM, are trying to hold on to the internal combustion engine so that they can keep selling part to cars, instead of sell all electric cars. I hope GM fold for being stupid, and for putting this country in danger by trying to keep us on oil!
ithium ion batteries can be recycled.lithium is a lighter element and less toxic and therefore has less of an impact on the environment,"It's in the best interests of the battery manufacturers to recycle them. Built into the cost is the price of reclaiming the battery packs,to ensure they will be recycled.Tesla has been extremely successful/efficent and chevy volt is very similar in design. All It takes is one succesful design to prove the technology and off and running with mass production.
The battery technology was just not matured or ready/come of age with the EV1,but battery technology now has evolved so very much in the past 5 years alone, that it is ready.I had worked on some aspects of the EVI(battery aspects) in the past and I said at the time,we are not ready yet.
This is any extremely well thought out, very fuel car,and battery technology I believe now as of 2008-has crossed the line. This car is gonna work very very well and extremely successful-mark my words.
i would think you mean 2004, the ev1's were found destoryed in 2004, and not only that the battery technology back then on the ev-1 was just a bunch of 12volt car batteries hooked up to an alternater, it wasn't legal to drive, it never passed DOT standards.
Actually, they used PSB EV-EC 1260 60 a/h lead-acid batteries with a total of 18 kWh in the 1999 lead-acid EV1 (standard) or the 1997 upgraded lead-acid EV1. These are EV batteries, not SLI.
The 1999 NiMH version used even better batteries with 26 kWh, or 140 miles range.
I KNOW that, but then I am not taking advantage of the plug-in feature of the car whereby it can run on battery alone for the first 40 miles or so after a charge. I might as well get a regular hybrid then, NOT a plug-in hybrid.
Regular hybrids are a terrifically bad idea from an economic perspective. Once this idea is developed and marketed, you'll wanna take a look at the overall cost to do your commute, and compare that to several other best choices. the motor is used to charge the batteries, this could well be very economical -depends on what they come up with. I thot the prius was a cool idea, poorly executed. It's too fast, doesn't get that great of mileage, and it's very expensive, so it's kinda like, WTF?
Now if you're trying to assuage guilt by doing right by the planet, I still thinks it's a boner, cuz the chemicals in those batteries have to go somewhere eventually!
A Volt? Gm has always made their cars affordable, where as if you want a Toyota Prius you're looking at about $55k after everything. These will probaly be around $18k brand new.
The volts are going to go for $40k Priuses are 22 to 24k or so.
"Lutz said the first-generation Volt will retail for about $40,000 and generate no profit for GM. The company hopes to make money as it rolls out later versions of the vehicle and other plug-in models." seattle times
Holy crap the Prius must have dropped in price like crazy...They were saying the Volt is suppose to go for about $18k give or take, this was on national television at the Chicago car show...
It was never 18k. It was 30k but then they had engineering problems. The price isn't quite set yet. Some are saying 35k but I have to think the CEO would know better.
The battery in the Volt is as they say state of the art.Anyway it looks better than any of the compitition so far, except maybe the tesla, but that car is $98,000.00
There are many more options out there with better aspects and better potentials than the Volt, and yes, a lot of them only have maybe 60 miles of battery range with no backup generator, but they show that there is better battery technology available than what is in GM's Volt... Better technology being implemented by tiny companies compared to GM.
And even so, they could easily be fitted with TRUE backup generators with a few gallons of clean burning, (and more efficient burning) biodiesel.
The Volt shouldn't even be considered "primarily an electric vehicle" because the range off the batteries alone is only 40 miles, (and 600 extra), when the gas motor kicks in to keep them going. This gives more incentive to just run the car off the generator, so you could HARDLY consider the 'range extender' just a back up plan in case you run out of battery power.
I thought battery and electric motor technology has advanced in the past few years..
but this guy just admitted that the EV1 (years ago) could go 50 miles more than the volt (on electric power only)
He's also trying to compare the charging times with the EV1, saying that it takes a couple hours less to charge, but NO SHIT! IT ALSO HAS A SHORTER ELECTRIC RANGE, WHICH YOU JUST ADMITTED TO, DUMBASS!!!
At a target of less than half the cost of the EV1, you can't expect to see the same range AND the additional cost and weight of a genset in the Volt. 40 miles per day is more than enough for most drivers. Want more? There are plenty of other options (LionEV offers a 450 mile pack), but be expected to pay much more for this than a Volt.
We are in an energy storage crisis (not an energy supply crisis). All current options to store electricity are very expensive. Give it time.
before you call the 200+ engineers working on a commercially viable electric car stupid, maybe you should build your own, and then brag about it and how much better than everyone else you are.
What is it with you EV1 guys? The EV1 was not a practical vehicle. It was a "dead end street". It was only a 2 seater. The miles per charge was greatly dependant on road and weather conditions. You had to "torture" the numbers to get the 60-70 mile range that is claimed: flat road, 72Deg, No load, 100Lb woman, brand new battery, etc. GM could not make any money on the EV!. What they learned from this is what came to fruition in the volt. Don't belive that silly DVD "Who killed the Electric Car".
No grand conspiracy. EV1 was a sucky little experiment -it failed. rather than GM losing their reputation on something that would disappoint, they ended it. this X-file is closed. put your tinfoil cap back on, I think Lutz is listening to your brain!
Wait! I can read deep into your mind! you've never run a business, you're not an engineer, and you watched a movie (many times) called who killed the electric car.
As an experiment, the EV1 did not fail. Experiments only fail if they don't answer the question they are designed to answer. The answers they got from the EV1 lead to the volt.
GM once HAD a plug-in car, and spent millions killing it, supposedly to save money.
Now, they're spending billions to re-create it, supposedly! What liars!! THEY DON'T EVEN ADMIT THAT EV1 HAD EPA CERTIFIED 140 MILES RANGE, MORE THAN 3 TIMES WHAT THE VOLT SUPPOSEDLY NEEDS.
What RU smoking? what secret, magic dust did they sprinkle on the EV1 to make it so special? Here's the secret: It was an F-ing golfcart powered by lead acid batteries. any clown with a grasp of electrical controls could build the same thing.
Keep in mind that the people at GM who are currently promising to role out the Volt are the exact same people that built a prior EV (the "Impact" or "EV1") and then went to all of the people who leased them, rounded them up, and absolutely shredded and destroyed every last one of them. This is all a hyped scam. The people at GM don't give a sh_t about EVs. The Volt will never be produced.
But if you're driving long distance each day, the VOLT loses its advantage, doesn't it.
The EV1, HondaEV and RAV4-EV put in over 500,000 miles for us -- that's a lot of driving, with trips to SF, Las Vegas, Toronto, NY, FLA, Oregon, Heavenly valley, etc.
There are many ways to kill it. The Th!nk EV looks good, until you find out that you buy the car, but rent the battery -- for $200 per month! That's a deal breaker.
If you are looking for a purely electric vehicle like the EV1, there are options. Look at the Tesla Roadster or the ZAP motors. But they are expensive. Last I heard the Volt should come in at the low $30's. The average commute for most people is less than the 40 miles the Volt gets. Could it get better with better tecnology, absolutely. But at what expense?
The past several months my average daily commute has totaled 44 miles at least. ZAP motors offerings look shitty. I love the tesla even though I'll never afford one. The fact is that the EV1 had an MSRP of 33,995. The volt is supposedly going for a similar price yet has less electric range and is more expensive to run.
The ZAP only has 3 wheels and only goes 50 mph, and falls apart. The Tesla isn't out yet, and can't use NiMH batteries, so will have a battery replacement problem.
yes its true. The problem in this day and age is that we have bob lutzes, bill fords, and Bob Nardelli's instead of André Citroën, Preston Tucker, Errett Lobban Cord, or Walter P. Chrysler. Unfortunately, it's not possibile to get Steve Jobs to take over GM, so basically the US auto industry is fucked.
My problem is that I often have to drive 22 miles down the interstate 1 way and 44 miles round trip. That means I have already gone beyond the 40 mile range. I dont need the range of an ICE car, just enough to get to work and back plus an extra 15 miles just in case I need to run errands. Thats 60 miles. If I need to go further than that I'll take an ICE car. Problem though, the EV1 isnt on the market, and the volt doesn't have the range and wont be produced.
Geez joness! Watch the video. The car does NOT have a 40-mile range. It has a 40-mile electric-only range, then the gas generator keeps it going for another 600 miles. It's exactly what we need, if they make it affordable.
How is a 40 mile electric only range an advantage over an 80 mile electric only range? That's still a 40 mile difference that must be fueled by gasoline. The Volt is at least twice as expensive to operate as the EV1 was, and they are touting this as an advantage? They have a 40 mile range because of the limitations of batteries and yet just 10 years earlier they had batteries that would take it twice as far on electricity. Something is fishy. I did watch the vid.
The advantage is that you don;t have to stop and plug the car in after the electric only mileage. Instead it switches to gasoline so you can continue on your trip. The EV1 was striclty a commuter car, this has more travel potential.
How is a 40 mile electric range an advantage over an 80 mile electric range? You still haven't explained this. The volt is more expensive to operate, its electric only range is not enough to make it worth owning. Like I said already, 60 mile electric range or no deal. people use their cars mostly for commuting. If they add a range extender, fine, but its the electric range that will most impact me day to day. Don't let them fool you.
I believe I di answer your question. You can travel farther than the 80 miles in the Volt. If all you want is a vehicle to go less than 80 miles a day (never taking it on a trip) the EV1 is great. However, if you want a vehicle that can serve both purposes, the Volt is great. I would use the Volt predominantly as a commuter car, since my commute is 20 miles, but I would like the freedom to go more than 80 miles if necessary.
You can probably double the 40 mile range, by just keeping it plugged in when you're not driving it during the day.
I can't wait for this car. I predict GM won't be able to build Volts fast enough. I just hope supply and demand won't drive the price up to unreasonable levels.
It's possible to get a better RE EV today than the volt is promised to be by simply adding an electric generator to the truck bed of a chevy s-10 ev along with a gas tank and you'd STILL get more electric range than the volt. You could do the same with the toyota rav 4 EV and also get more electric range and efficiancy.
Ok, I don't get it. Compared to the EV1, the Volt has less than half the range, much less power and only slightly less recharge time (even though the volt has newer battery technology). How is this progress??? They made the EV1 over 12 years ago! The world needs EV. Especially in NZ where petrol is now $2.00 a litre! After seeing "who killed the electric car?" I'm very sceptical. Hopefully they don't kill this one either. That is when they finally release it...
The EV1 was built in response to the CARB mandate of 1996 which was pushed back because GM was the only one to actually spend a billion dollars to develop a pure electric from the ground up. T The EV1 was far ahead of it's time but gas was $1 a gallon. The EV1 was a very expensive demonstration. It was way ahead of it's time but a great car. If you put the LION batteries of today in the EV1 it would probably go 300 miles on a charge but still cost $100,000.
I think it should be pointed out that the batteries used in the volt are different than cell phone and computer batteries. They are going to be a magnesium or phosphate lithium ion battery, which are a lot more reliable and last a lot longer.
Only suckers would believe a company would spend millions to kill the electric car. That was just more Hollywood propaganda. The EV1 died because it was not practical for the mass market. The volt seems to be solving the big problem with the EV1, range. But if it doesn't have the get up an go or a real car the volt won't sell either. I would like to see the fuel motor be a turbine generator like the Capstone Turbine. That can run on almost any kind of fuel and burn very cleanly.
Not going to happen ever! With the profit from faulty parts, stock ownership from exxon, shell ect, and the ties from us gov't taxes that come from gas--they will never make it work! How would we pay for the roads in the us. I think it funny as hell how we pay 3.19 a gallon and Tehran pays $.02 a gallon for gas!All of a sudden in 2007 gas shot up to $.04 and the people started rioting!
If I cant buy it does not exist! I don't care how much money they pump into advertising not to sell this thing but its a wet dream that wont be ready for years (maybe 10-15). Even then they might only lease it and we know how that turned out with the EV1. A Tesla Roadster I can buy so it does exist :)
2010 target date?!? If that true then there should already be crash test available showing how it will be safe for the general public. No crash test anywhere how about a sneak peak test drive? Ohh you cant drive a rolling chaise ... its a pipe dream plain and simple.
GM has already showed the american consumer that they absolutely care nothign about us, and dont care what we want. by dis-continuing the EV1 and lying through their teeth when they said no one wanted it. The volt is yet another "Carrot on a stick" vehicle. they already HAD the perfect alternative energy car on the market that used ZERO Arab oil. but they went NAZI on the poor ev1's and destroyed them to keep people from remembering they exist. BOYCOTT GM!! untill they give us a PURE electric!
You're absolutely 100% right. GM is still lying. Existing NiMH, still running in some EVs (GM killed all theirs, but Toyota sold some which are still running), gives more than 100 miles range, and lasts 10 years or more, is CHEAPER than Lithium, and 50% higher energy density than the Lithium they are using on the VOLT.

Tamayo1980 2 years ago
Its like when video cassette recorders first came out the price was high but as more and more models came out the pieces went down and we got DVD and Blue Ray, as more Ion batteries are produced for more and more cars they will have on chose but to produce NiMH cells for cars. But we need to nurture the EREV market and let it grow.
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
People keep bashing GE for killing the EV but now they are building a good concept and people keep beating them down, I for one think that an extended range electric EREV is the way to go. We need to decouple the gas engine from the drive train. Only a few people will buy all electric cars because of the plug anxiety. We need this type of car from all of the auto makers; this will drive down the price and lead to a long range all electric car.
FluxCapacitor2008 3 years ago
The chevy volt is certainly the most stylish.
GM does very nice work.

NeoAltPower 2 years ago

There are no savings with the Volt. The price is estimated at $40K to $48K. Automobile critics have dubbed it "Grandma's electric vehicle." The production Volt is hideous and bland. Nissan has already developed an electric car that gets TWICE the mileage as the Volt.
TranCendenZ 3 years ago
yeah, talk about a flop of a car before it even hit's the markets. this is a little californian's toy at best, and pointless projects like this are pushing the big 3 into the ground. They should go back to making cars that people will actually buy, not spending their money on publicity stunts.

I love this guys hesitation when asked to confirm the 2011 production date... this thing is still 5 yrs away at least!!
f1nuts 3 years ago
so, the reason i'm asking is because if you use the battery to run the motors AND the heater (heaters eat a fuckload of power)then it cuts the hell out of your range. so what's the point to own one in the top third of the country?
death2tuners 3 years ago
Not to mention that battery range is slashed drastically in cold weather anyway.
This thing will have a 10mile range in winter... max!
f1nuts 3 years ago
Hmm...i dont know why everyone is so negative. The volt's a good idea. Its electric most of the time, 40 miles are enough. The Toyota prius is realy just a petrol car with a small battery, its almost pointless. The Toyota RAV4 EV and GM EV1 are too impracticle with battery only power...so the volt is the best compromise

GM refuses to call it one but basically the volt is a PHEV
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle= HYBRID
it has a 1.4 liter petrol engine like the one on the CHEVY AVEO to generate electricity after the onboard battery is depleted to extend range
so its just another hybrid that is 14 years behind the Prius.
yes more than a DECADE behind !

The VOLT...is a HOAX.
If GM were serious, it would first acknowledge that there are successful EVs!
Then understand that a 40-mile-range EV is NOTHING NEW! The Toyota RAV4-EV, after 6 years, still goes more than 100 miles on a charge.
Since the supposed VOLT is really a 40-mile-range EV with Range Extender, start it with lead, then upgrade to Lithium if and when it's proven.

Yes, GM is completely stifled by modern American bureaucratic corruption, but at least give their engineers credit for creating a vehicle that could really make a difference in the environmental landscape, and pave the way for true EV's, instead of the "Hollywood image" lie that is the Prius. ithium ion batteries can be recycled.lithium is a lighter element and less toxic and therefore has less of an impact on the environment,"It's in the best interests of the battery manufacturers to recycle them. Built into the cost is the price of reclaiming the battery packs,to ensure they will be recycled.Tesla has been extremely successful/efficent and chevy volt is very similar in design. All It takes is one succesful design to prove the technology and off and running with mass production.
scotters201 3 years ago
The battery technology was just not matured or ready/come of age with the EV1,but battery technology now has evolved so very much in the past 5 years alone, that it is ready.I had worked on some aspects of the EVI(battery aspects) in the past and I said at the time,we are not ready yet.
This is any extremely well thought out, very fuel car,and battery technology I believe now as of 2008-has crossed the line. This car is gonna work very very well and extremely successful-mark my words.
scotters201 3 years ago
i would think you mean 2004, the ev1's were found destoryed in 2004, and not only that the battery technology back then on the ev-1 was just a bunch of 12volt car batteries hooked up to an alternater, it wasn't legal to drive, it never passed DOT standards.
Rcrby525 3 years ago
Actually, they used PSB EV-EC 1260 60 a/h lead-acid batteries with a total of 18 kWh in the 1999 lead-acid EV1 (standard) or the 1997 upgraded lead-acid EV1. These are EV batteries, not SLI.
The 1999 NiMH version used even better batteries with 26 kWh, or 140 miles range.

trwent 3 years ago
if you watch the video, they mention how it has an on-board motor/genset so it will charge itself.
PHOTOGRASPER 3 years ago
I KNOW that, but then I am not taking advantage of the plug-in feature of the car whereby it can run on battery alone for the first 40 miles or so after a charge. I might as well get a regular hybrid then, NOT a plug-in hybrid.
trwent 3 years ago
Regular hybrids are a terrifically bad idea from an economic perspective. Once this idea is developed and marketed, you'll wanna take a look at the overall cost to do your commute, and compare that to several other best choices. the motor is used to charge the batteries, this could well be very economical -depends on what they come up with. I thot the prius was a cool idea, poorly executed. It's too fast, doesn't get that great of mileage, and it's very expensive, so it's kinda like, WTF?
PHOTOGRASPER 3 years ago
Too fast?

TiKondaRoga 3 years ago
The volts are going to go for $40k Priuses are 22 to 24k or so.
"Lutz said the first-generation Volt will retail for about $40,000 and generate no profit for GM. The company hopes to make money as it rolls out later versions of the vehicle and other plug-in models." seattle times
Prius info comes from the prius web site.
goose1077 3 years ago
Holy crap the Prius must have dropped in price like crazy...They were saying the Volt is suppose to go for about $18k give or take, this was on national television at the Chicago car show...
TiKondaRoga 3 years ago
It was never 18k. It was 30k but then they had engineering problems. The price isn't quite set yet. Some are saying 35k but I have to think the CEO would know better.
goose1077 3 years ago
The battery in the Volt is as they say state of the art.Anyway it looks better than any of the compitition so far, except maybe the tesla, but that car is $98,000.00
striker3 3 years ago
There are many more options out there with better aspects and better potentials than the Volt, and yes, a lot of them only have maybe 60 miles of battery range with no backup generator, but they show that there is better battery technology available than what is in GM's Volt... Better technology being implemented by tiny companies compared to GM.
And even so, they could easily be fitted with TRUE backup generators with a few gallons of clean burning, (and more efficient burning) biodiesel.
in2octane 3 years ago
The Volt shouldn't even be considered "primarily an electric vehicle" because the range off the batteries alone is only 40 miles, (and 600 extra), when the gas motor kicks in to keep them going. This gives more incentive to just run the car off the generator, so you could HARDLY consider the 'range extender' just a back up plan in case you run out of battery power.
in2octane 3 years ago
Wait wait wait...
IT ALSO HAS A SHORTER ELECTRIC RANGE, WHICH YOU JUST ADMITTED TO, DUMBASS!!!
in2octane 3 years ago
The battery in the EV1 would cost over $30K today. Very few people would purchase a $60K eco car. The Volt is the best concept to date.
pjkPA 3 years ago

jmarquise 3 years ago
RANGE = MONEY
Give it time.

liveoilfree 3 years ago
What is it with you EV1 guys? The EV1 was not a practical vehicle. It was a "dead end street". It was only a 2 seater. The miles per charge was greatly dependant on road and weather conditions. You had to "torture" the numbers to get the 60-70 mile range that is claimed: flat road, 72Deg, No load, 100Lb woman, brand new battery, etc. GM could not make any money on the EV!. What they learned from this is what came to fruition in the volt. Don't belive that silly DVD "Who killed the Electric Car".
juscurious 3 years ago 3
No grand conspiracy. EV1 was a sucky little experiment -it failed. rather than GM losing their reputation on something that would disappoint, they ended it. this X-file is closed. put your tinfoil cap back on, I think Lutz is listening to your brain!
Wait! I can read deep into your mind! you've never run a business, you're not an engineer, and you watched a movie (many times) called who killed the electric car.
PHOTOGRASPER 3 years ago
As an experiment, the EV1 did not fail. Experiments only fail if they don't answer the question they are designed to answer. The answers they got from the EV1 lead to the volt.

The Volt will never be produced.

joness105639 3 years ago
If you are looking for a purely electric vehicle like the EV1, there are options. Look at the Tesla Roadster or the ZAP motors. But they are expensive. Last I heard the Volt should come in at the low $30's. The average commute for most people is less than the 40 miles the Volt gets. Could it get better with better tecnology, absolutely. But at what expense?
sjohnson2221 3 years ago
The past several months my average daily commute has totaled 44 miles at least. ZAP motors offerings look shitty. I love the tesla even though I'll never afford one. The fact is that the EV1 had an MSRP of 33,995. The volt is supposedly going for a similar price yet has less electric range and is more expensive to run.
joness105639 3 years ago
It is also legal to drive a volt, were it was not legal to drive an EV1. The EV1 had to have a special temporary permit to make it legal.
goose1077 3 years ago
The ZAP only has 3 wheels and only goes 50 mph, and falls apart. The Tesla isn't out yet, and can't use NiMH batteries, so will have a battery replacement problem.
liveoilfree 3 years ago
The Zap X has four wheels but is estimated to arrive in 2010. The Zap sedan, alias, and truck have three wheels.
sjohnson2221 3 years ago

GM, you really dropped the ball on this. You could have been whipping the Japanese asses if you continued the R&D on electric cars...or even hybrids.
Lets wait and see if it actually goes on sale in 2011.
sendyoshit 3 years ago
yes its true. The problem in this day and age is that we have bob lutzes, bill fords, and Bob Nardelli's instead of André Citroën, Preston Tucker, Errett Lobban Cord, or Walter P. Chrysler. Unfortunately, it's not possibile to get Steve Jobs to take over GM, so basically the US auto industry is fucked.
joness105639 3 years ago
Jesus christ ADD people! listen to the man
Its got 600 mile total range. everyone has a 110, so the 40 mile thing is not a problem anywhere. 220 is a major problem.
ev1 had 90
its a 110v plug
This is what people want. I don't drive 45 miles one way so I would prefer a volt to an ev1.
The trouble for the volt is that is will cost over 10k more than the new prius.
alienmoonbase 3 years ago
My problem is that I often have to drive 22 miles down the interstate 1 way and 44 miles round trip. That means I have already gone beyond the 40 mile range. I dont need the range of an ICE car, just enough to get to work and back plus an extra 15 miles just in case I need to run errands. Thats 60 miles. If I need to go further than that I'll take an ICE car. Problem though, the EV1 isnt on the market, and the volt doesn't have the range and wont be produced.
joness105639 3 years ago
Geez joness! Watch the video. The car does NOT have a 40-mile range. It has a 40-mile electric-only range, then the gas generator keeps it going for another 600 miles. It's exactly what we need, if they make it affordable.
RentAnEducation 3 years ago
How is a 40 mile electric only range an advantage over an 80 mile electric only range? That's still a 40 mile difference that must be fueled by gasoline. The Volt is at least twice as expensive to operate as the EV1 was, and they are touting this as an advantage? They have a 40 mile range because of the limitations of batteries and yet just 10 years earlier they had batteries that would take it twice as far on electricity. Something is fishy. I did watch the vid.
joness105639 3 years ago
The advantage is that you don;t have to stop and plug the car in after the electric only mileage. Instead it switches to gasoline so you can continue on your trip. The EV1 was striclty a commuter car, this has more travel potential.
sjohnson2221 3 years ago
How is a 40 mile electric range an advantage over an 80 mile electric range? You still haven't explained this. The volt is more expensive to operate, its electric only range is not enough to make it worth owning. Like I said already, 60 mile electric range or no deal. people use their cars mostly for commuting. If they add a range extender, fine, but its the electric range that will most impact me day to day. Don't let them fool you.
joness105639 3 years ago
I believe I di answer your question. You can travel farther than the 80 miles in the Volt. If all you want is a vehicle to go less than 80 miles a day (never taking it on a trip) the EV1 is great. However, if you want a vehicle that can serve both purposes, the Volt is great. I would use the Volt predominantly as a commuter car, since my commute is 20 miles, but I would like the freedom to go more than 80 miles if necessary.
sjohnson2221 3 years ago
You can probably double the 40 mile range, by just keeping it plugged in when you're not driving it during the day.
I can't wait for this car. I predict GM won't be able to build Volts fast enough. I just hope supply and demand won't drive the price up to unreasonable levels.
dahur1 3 years ago 2
It's possible to get a better RE EV today than the volt is promised to be by simply adding an electric generator to the truck bed of a chevy s-10 ev along with a gas tank and you'd STILL get more electric range than the volt. You could do the same with the toyota rav 4 EV and also get more electric range and efficiancy.
joness105639 3 years ago
"It's exactly what we need, if they make it affordable."
+1
tadaa11 3 years ago
Ok, I don't get it. Compared to the EV1, the Volt has less than half the range, much less power and only slightly less recharge time (even though the volt has newer battery technology). How is this progress??? They made the EV1 over 12 years ago! The world needs EV. Especially in NZ where petrol is now $2.00 a litre! After seeing "who killed the electric car?" I'm very sceptical. Hopefully they don't kill this one either. That is when they finally release it...
ironclaw27 3 years ago
The EV1 was built in response to the CARB mandate of 1996 which was pushed back because GM was the only one to actually spend a billion dollars to develop a pure electric from the ground up. T The EV1 was far ahead of it's time but gas was $1 a gallon. The EV1 was a very expensive demonstration. It was way ahead of it's time but a great car. If you put the LION batteries of today in the EV1 it would probably go 300 miles on a charge but still cost $100,000.
pjkPA 3 years ago
I think it should be pointed out that the batteries used in the volt are different than cell phone and computer batteries. They are going to be a magnesium or phosphate lithium ion battery, which are a lot more reliable and last a lot longer.

They need to offer a 8kwh model for broke people like me who only drive 5 miles a day.

The Lithium they are using has an unusual discharge curve, and you have to BUY 16 kWh to be able to access 8 kWh.
So essentially, the Lithium costs TWICE what it should...and it's already expensive.

GM is lying about the VOLT, just as it lies about the EV1.
If GM wanted to make a plug-in EV, why is it still not telling the truth about the 100-mile-range EV1?
Why did GM spend 15 years killing the Electric car, and who would believe them NOW??
Liars. Only suckers believe GM.

Cobasys is partnering with a123 batteries for the volt. Cobasys is a subsidiary of chevron. I think they might be doing it again!

No one ever complained about the range!
That was a fiction.
We've driven over 500,000 miles in EVs, that's a lot of driving you say couldn't have happened.
The idea of the VOLT is sound, but Lutz and GM are idiots.

Target date 2010 so you can buy it.
robertg222 3 years ago
GM has no intention of selling the VOLT, they will sabotage it.
liveoilfree 3 years ago
2010 target date?!? If that true then there should already be crash test available showing how it will be safe for the general public. No crash test anywhere how about a sneak peak test drive? Ohh you cant drive a rolling chaise ... its a pipe dream plain and simple.

Heard that mules are fitted with the Lion battery driveline and will be starting vehicle testing.
We are ready... give us a all electric option less the ICE engine at a reduced price.$25K or less.

Hows the range with the AC on, and the stereo cranking? What a joke.
