Are you referring to ammo? Compared to .22 LR, all ammo is expensive, however if you look at Walmart prices, 9mm =$11 - 12/box. .45 ACP=$16-17/box.
Thing is, you fire a 1911 much more conservatively. You don't go blasting away at a paper target with .45. You take your time to reload and fire accurately as opposed to spray and pray like a Glock 17 or Beretta 92F.
In the same vain, revolvers are even more fun to shoot at the range. You don't need to pick up brass.
@Nytan01 All five of my pistols are 9mm with an exception of one. I used to own a glock 21 before the ammo price hit the sky. I figure you get 50 shots from either boxes so why pay 6 to 7 dollar extra for 45 acp. It's funny that you mention about revolvers because I'm planning on getting one soon. I plan to take it on camping trips and backpacking in the woods.
I believe that the Glock 21/21SF is the most effective combat pistol on the planet (representing reliability, ease of use, stopping power, and cost) and sincerely hope it gets chosen as the next USAF sidearm.
That said, if 9mm is your thing, then stick with it. It is a proven cartridge and is very economical to shoot.
I would not choose a Glock 21 over a Glock 17 or any wonder nine if target shooting/plinking were my priority.
People buy 1911's because they are extremely easy to customize.
1911's are also inherently one of the most accurate automatic pistols and are therefore very tough to beat in ISPC competitions.
If you want to stick with 9mm and also want the benefits of a single action trigger, I strongly suggest you look at the STI GP6. It's the best of both worlds.
i just bought a springfield 1911 "loaded" and now im addicted.
