Hey Mr. Pool Builder?, Have you read about the Sandals Resort spa drowning? Do you know about the Federal VGB act of 2008? Have you read about the kids that have been eviserated? It's hard to hear about these things when you have your head up your ass. Please go educate yourself or a least stop claiming to be involved in anyway in the swimming pool industry.

That's what the raised cover is for- to protect people!
Do you now why they encase the fan you buy at Target in metal? So you don't stick your fingers in it. Take off the metal shield and bad things will happen. Leave the shield on and nothing will happen.
Sensationalism folks.

I thought pool drains just worked by gravity, just turn a valve and it drains by itself. I didn't know they "sucked" the water out. Interesting.

that looks like some serious suction for just one drain, especially if there are 2 pumps running from that. must have 2-3hp pumps on the other side

By the way, I am a licensed pool builder in California.
Drains are as dangerous as you allow them to be. Missing, broken and flat 8" covers are where the danger is.
If its missing: stay away.
If its broken: stay away.
If you're not sure, stay away.
Like anything, they are as dangerous as you allow them to be.
