I have never seen someone play Switch Axe like that. Considering how good you are I'd assume you're doing it correctly.

When's the best time to use Sword Mode? When should the Axe Uppercut be used instead of the lunge/overhead swing?

Yes, you're missing the fact that Great inceadeus has a power vial and amber horfrost only has elemental vial. Power vials > elemental vials always. The amount of extra raw damage from Great inceadeus should more than make up for the nice ice damage of amber horfrost. I know it's absolutely the best switch axe in general, and though I'm not 100% certain, I think Great Inceadeus might be the best one specifically against ala as well.
