  • Chris Pennie is without a doubt the most original Drummer I've come across so far. Gene Krupa was a V12 Engine of a human being: Pure drive & Balls. Terry Bozzio, is Darwinism in the flesh. He's a storyteller, with just drums & percussion. Tomas Lang is like fireworks on the fourth of July: Spectacular. Chris Pennie, is like having that rare opportunity to observe a master Swiss watchmaker create some of his finest work piece by piece until you have something one of a kind in your hand.

  • Chris Pennie, 2006 B.C. (Before Coheed).

  • technique + imagination. epic

  • wow, what an awful beat. You is shit Penny

  • He talks too much but he's still a good drummer.

  • I dont like it. Just noise.

  • @Zw1d so is all other music. it's just that. noise. your point?

  • @masterbassplayer93 you're wrong, so i'm afraid you're listening to wrong music.

  • @Zw1d ok 1. wasn't being serious when I said that. but 2. No i'm not wrong because all music is sound, sound is noise, ergo music is noise :P. but 3 ( my actual serious comment), how am I listening to "wrong" music? if it's simply because you don't like it, then wow.

  • @Zw1d you have no ear my friend

  • He'd be the best djent drummer.

  • @anguskahn22 no one, no matter how good they are is going to top tomas haake and navene koperweis bro. but chris is fucking godly though.

  • so fucking good. i watch this probably like once a week. he has probably the most professional and discplined playing and technique ive ever seen.

  • his drumming started so called "mathcore"

  • Polyrhythms: if you absolutely, positively have to confuse every motherfucker at the concert as to what you're playing, accept no substitutes.

  • @alexkills ... pulp Fiction, Yeah. Hahahahahaha!

  • @JUSTIN030783 seems like I no longer have the top comment any longer. ah well, fun while it lasted. (commenting on my old account with my new one. BOOM.)

  • Such a laid back guy, if watch some DEP shows, he's just in the back chilling while the rest of the band is going insane.

  • He's so coordinated that he can even chew his gum on a different beat. Pennie for Prez.

  • coordination rape

  • you see alot of that odd time signature in Coheed

  • Awww shit! That polyrhythm at 2:05 is super groovy! He seems really nervous when talking, but he does a damn good job!

  • never say yes when you really mean no

  • @JUSTIN030783 Have you watched any of the Jon Karel solo vids? He's got the same demeanor. Smiling and relaxed, rockin shit. Not quite as awesome as this though.

  • drummers, is it possible to watch this video without making uncontrollable funny-faces?

  • He's really really fast but actually I didn't really like this solo. It really does seem like he's just messing around in 5 and it just isn't something I would want to listen to. Music is about sounding good.

  • this is confusion...i wanna play like tht

  • Fuck this guy...

    IS AWESOME!!!!!

  • honestly u cant really compare travis to chris cuz chris is WAY more technical, but Travis has MORE SOUL!

  • @Taifujiwara Chris is just a better drummer all-in-all, just because Travis Barker doesn't know the concept of dynamics and plays loud does not mean he has soul.

  • Lame

  • He looks and plays like a mathematician.

  • His drum solo on Coheed's neverender is awesome

  • @HimMa14

Chris didn't play drums on that album though

  • @fcpusername neverender is not an album, and if you're referring to 'no world for tomorrow', he didn't play drums on the album, but the drums were still mostly written by him...

  • @HimMa14

I meant to say Second Stage Turbine Blade, the album on which Neverender appears and their first album. I didnt mean No World For Tomorrow. I seriously doubt that Pennie played on their first album or even wrote anything for it.

  • @fcpusername I meant a series of live shows which is also called neverender. he performs a huge drum solo on 'The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut'...

  • @HimMa14

Well thats where the confusion came from, sorry about that

  • super god shit!!!!!!hes got technique..

  • His bass drum sounds weird.

  • write fred grenier on youtube, if you want to see drum video!

  • chris's snare work is unmatched

  • watch?v=5gIpLjiaFRg this guy is alot better..

  • @zadams1212 You can't be serious! Josh was a better fit in Coheed than Chris simply because the drumming in that band is too dumbed down for Chris. But there is no contest here - Chris Pennie is a much better drummer.

  • :0

  • Chris Pennie is amazing..not quite a Dennis Chambers or Billy Cobham yet, but very very close

  • Why is Joey Jordison in the related videos? Fuck that

  • fuck my life... he's too good.

  • Wanna know the best part of the video? THE WHOLE FUCKING THING

  • So refreshing seeing a dude that doesn't have a rack, chromatically tuned toms and seven kicks to sound fuckin incredible. No show, all technique, talent, and musicality.

He's a jazz drummer at heart...

  • SON OF A B!!!!

  • water drums and intestine percussion as an embryo

  • he holds the microphone like a drumstick lmao

  • @handsomeallday567

    Hahahaha he really does

  • when he was born they immediately gave him drum sticks =O

  • from 3:15-4:25 is gold, the rest is just noise even with the impressive time signature shit

  • @xheyitsowenjx Well don't diss on Coheed bro. If he is happy with them you would be happy, if you truly looked up to him.

  • @xheyitsowenjx

    Travis Orbin

    Jon Karel

    Blake Richardson

    Robert Platz

    to name a few

  • Comment removed

  • Ok travis barker your turn hahaha god this is real drumming right here kids

  • @xheyitsowenjx I will agree, so long as you include Danny Carey from Tool and Thomas Pridgeon from the Mars Volta

  • ...and this is why we play drums.

  • no way man, who is this guy?

  • @rocket625 chris pennie man , fucking sick as fuck ! from dillinger escape plan mainly , but yeah just amazing . peace man !1

  • @rocket625 Drummer for Coheed and Cambria.

  • @rocket625 More importantly than him being the current drummer for coheed and cambria, he is the former drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan. His playing was more showcased while with Dillinger, IMO.

  • So Arjen Robben play drums?

  • im so confused

  • i always wonder what it's like to play that good.

  • @mejomejomejo

Pennie has excellent technique and the reason you think it's just noise, is probably because the audio quality of the recording is crap.

  • @mejomejomejo you either know nothing about music or are joking

  • @mejomejomejo dude came from a drumline.. hows that for bad technique?

also, its noise to you, coze you're little brain doesnt understand whats goin on.

go listen to lady gaga now

  • at 2:04 my head was blown!

  • He's too good. He makes me sick to my stomach.

  • He has like, four brains.

  • Is it true that Chris Pennie is auditioning for Dream Theater? I read that online somewhere.

  • best drum solo ever, amazing skills............you rock man

  • justin bieber?!?! THIS SHOW WAS GREAT

  • Love the metric modulation and polyrhythms. It so clean too.

  • Comment removed

  • i watch this all the time and it never gets any less impressive

  • someone put this on fast forward, oh wait, chris pennie is just a monster beast god of drumming.

  • omg that's horrible!! this is so bad :D:D omg does anyabody know in the 21st century what is a good drum solo? god damned

  • @ferrari934 Please be joking...

  • @kindofawesome923 damn godd technic, but thats not all, think about this!

  • @ferrari934 More than anything, it is mislabeled as a solo. Most "solos" occur within the framework of a band's song. This is a solo piece, in that it is meant to stand on its own. It is very technical, and shows timing as well as composition. I doubt you could recreate it.

  • oh my god

  • repetitive much?

  • I'm thinking that if he wasn't a great drummer, he wouldn't get much "attention" from the girls. Just sayin

  • what the....

  • i wonder if this guy was just born talented, or just didn't do anything but play drums when he was a kid. or maybe he's just a robot

  • @thedangermonty the second one.

  • @thedangermonty he has cyborg arms and right leg but that left leg is all skill bro

  • @thedangermonty well the robot part could be true... lets go back and take a look at dillinger escape plan's song unretrofied. it so makes sence XD

  • @thedangermonty Robot.

  • @thedangermonty the answer is : didn't do anything but play drums

  • @thedangermonty he started playing drums when he was 13, took it serious when he was 16 and he's like 33.

  • @thedangermonty Some people are naturally gifted AND disciplined enough to stick it out through the tough parts of learning any skill. This is one of those people. Most people are neither, some are one, but very few have it all.

  • 2:05

    Fuck...

  • he is not human.

  • @mypulsereverberates Listen to Coheed and Cambria - Guns of Summer off their new album with Pennie drumming, insanely skilled.

  • Damn Chris Pennie is like wasted talent. He deserved much better than the Dillinger Escape Plan. Coheed and Cambria is a great band but lets face it, they arent a drum-focused band at all. Chris should look for better opportunities

  • r his snares down?

  • My head nearly exploded trying to count that

  • i hate solos like this! I admit, he has a lot of talent and yes it was on odd time signature but the solo itself sounded bad. Solos that have a rhythm or a nice music sound, one that is nice to listen to.. Does that make sense?

  • @aliont No. Just...stop.

  • @Shabutie554 sorry, I'm bad at wording things. I know what I mean but it's hard to say/write it..

  • @aliont so you mean you like the neil peart kind of solos? Chris Solo is somewhat countable. mainly you count 123 123 123, except he kinda changes the starting of one once in a while. you can hear that his base drum , hi hat pattern keeps on repeating. so if you really want to count, that's where you start I guess. but what makes this awesome is how he can keep his feet somewhat the same while his hands are changing timings if this make sense...........

  • @m0410450 It makes a lot more sense than the shit i said. And I do like nearl peart type solos and others, depending on their sound. I'm not that good at drums so I didn't notice what you pointed out.

  • @aliont you didn't like the second half?

i thought the rhythym made much more sense towards the end (doesn't mean i was able to count, i just thought it was easier to nod your head to)

  • @idontcare009 ... I didn't watch the second half *does now*

  • @idontcare009 I didn't like the video or the last bit of the vid, the middle was good/okay

  • lost me at about 3:12

  • Oh, don't worry guys, I can play that.

NAWT. Arms and legs would get so confused I'd end up in a pretzel. This guy's a BEAST.

  • His brain splits into four halves.

  • @yorik58 Four halves? These make up to 2 brains.

  • His left hand roll would make Buddy Rich proud!

  • @surethang27 shame on yourself...buddy rich? EPIC FAIL

  • @rwoods2k Dude please clarify your statement. U like Buddy Rich? or u think Buddy sux? or u think Buddy would not be impressesd? or u think Chris is in another league? I wanna know.

  • @surethang27 this guy does not belong in the same discussion of BR. He doesnt even belong in the same discussion as Steve Smith. I'm not trying to be a dick or something, its just cold hard facts. Playing polyrhythms and odd meters doesnt equate to BR comparisons. its as absurd as when ppl thought Travis Barker was worth a crap. The best part of TB was the demographic that bought his CD's. I'll say Pennie is light years better than TB, but nowhere near Steve Smith. And certainly not BR.

  • @rwoods2k I wasn't comparing Chris to Buddy. Some of the things he does reminds me of Buddy, an he was obv. influenced by Buddy amongst countless other drummers. The music Chris plays would have to exclude him from a comparison with a guy like Buddy, but it is wonderful to have a drummer like Chris who incorporated odd meters etc. to metal, cuz i love both jazz and metal. Travis Barker don't get me started. I hate when people compare Barker to anybody like Buddy.

  • lol at like 3 18 he kinda starts to play guns of summer kindaa nay1 see what i meann?

  • why did he go to Coheed :( DEP owns them

  • @zarquan99 lol...

  • @zarquan99 ehh, not really.

  • This man right here is my favorite man. The one man I would go gay for. The one man.

  • i saw him do an exhibition live with stuff just like this, its sooo difficult to play

  • CO-ORDINATION NIGHTMARE!!!!

  • @beefcake8888 no, its called polyrhythm

  • I have played drums for around 2 years now and I just sat down for like an hour and learned that first beat he does its so sweet and really difficult! I hope to take a day over my summer break and just learn every part to this solo and incorporate parts of it into my playing this really helped me.

  • Genius

  • jon karel is 100 times better

  • @mygodDYLAN1 They're evenly matched dude.

  • @mygodDYLAN1 Jon Karel is good, but I don't know if he's better. Both drummers are absolutely fantastic. Saying he is 100 times better is pretty ignorant, and kind of gives away what little you know about drumming.

  • @YogritMUN

I concur. But I like Karels' style better. Chris pennie is ridonculous, though.

  • @YogritMUN yeah man jon karel is amazing. so eclectic. like pennie is a fucking robot, he's perfect. but karel knows how to groove. theyre both so good for the bands they were in.

  • He is amazing on "Guns of Summer." Such a genius.

  • honestly one of the best drummers....ever...great timeing and technique

  • He reminds me of Danny Carey. Its going to be interesting to see what he does with Coheed.

  • @xranger87x haha there's like 2.5 minutes of only drums

  • the precision and feeling (groove) of chris pennie is amazing!! Guys can you go to my drum videos and give me some advice? Im just starting and i dont know how to improve other than practice :(

  • @DavidChoiDrumz

    Have you tried drugs yet?

  • @Elganko

no.. does weed help??? :) how??

  • and hes chewing gum...

  • impressive but no sense of a theme dosnt feel like its real.. just feels like hes opened up guitar pro and and wrote somthing and where is the unity in all of it! sound and style change to much

  • His style and theme would be linear playing, cuz that's what defines him as a drummer (IMO). Anyhow; it's a solopiece so there's neccessarily no obligation in theme; just style.

  • @96anky fair enough haha im not really a drummer but it just feels like he seriously writes the music on paper then plays it not plays it then writes it down on paper :S

  • @mygodDYLAN1 Simple mind need help. Grimlock break down meaning. Off-beat drumming called "poly-rythm." This mean, not normal drumming. Old style drumming=elvis, beatles, ac/dc, etc. New style drumming=Dillinger Escape Plan...oh, fuck it! There's no point explaining it to a dumbass like yourself. If you don't understand, then don't listen.

  • @busteraperture acatlly i love their music i just think their drumming is waaaaay over rated

  • @busteraperture oh and also i know what poly rythm is bloke dont lecture me on music ac

  • @mygodDYLAN1 Think of it like jazz but faster, and heavier, and you're too musically uncreative to wrap your mind around it.

  • @Xiatter ahh lol you are so wrong in saying that haha theres no jazz elements in it all

if chris pennie saw what you said "jazz but faster and heavier" he would facepalm. and im very creative

  • Comment removed

  • @mygodDYLAN1 Real jazz is improvised by people with the talent to do so. JAZZ jazz is not fucking Kenny G or big band swing or even Bossa Nova, as far as I'm concerned, though I tend to enjoy the latter two of the three.

Not so much improvisation here, but Chris probably understands the similarities.

If you took the same thing, slowed it down, mellowed it out just a little, it'd fit right in with the right jazz piece.

Learn what the fuck jazz is before you tell me I'm wrong.

  • @Xiatter meh genres mean diffrent things to diffrent people but the majority would disagree with you jazz is not freestyle.. thats freestyle jazz..toi

  • @mygodDYLAN1 You just admitted you're wrong.

  • @Xiatter either way this guys shit

  • @Xiatter hahaha youre silly.

  • What is with that snare...

  • he took the snares off of the drum about a quarter through.

  • @Vaurion

sexy, thats what it is haha

  • i have literally no idea what is going on from like 1:38-4:00

i realize he said it was in 5 but holy shit. that wasnt just in five, that was a better 5 than most people can play in 4.

  • five on the hands and then varying between 3,4 and 5 ostinatoes on the feet.

  • i honestly wish i had a clue about drum technique. alls i knows is that that was bandin and fucing confusing.

  • his rolls are damn tight

  • so fuckin good

  • Nasty.

  • This shit is damn near impossible to play

  • @imagayfox than go learn some drums :))

  • @imagayfox it`s damn possible but u have to practice a couple of hours daily... that`s the secret mate. ;-)

  • @imagayfox you know?

  • is very dificult to do it. the cordination is very hard. but for my opinion i dont liked how its sounds
