ive noticed that the only people who comment on how smoke is bad are people that wish they could a have a truck that sounds like that or smokes like that. nice truck dude
Ok dude who thinks he is a mechanic....smoke is not from clogged air filter or egr bs it's from alot of fuel that is unburned...this does not result in damage to the engine it's just excess fuel not fully burned...and it does not hurt the rear compression wheel on the turbo at the speed he was going and the RPM'S he was at the turbo is spinning like crazy so in result no damage has been made... SO All in All you don't know anything except for stuff that u have been misinformed on..So In My Word
@urbex2007 - while you are correct that black smoke is unburned fuel, there is nothing "wrong" with the truck. There is no DPF, exhaust sensors, egr, plugged air filter, or fuel pressure issue with the truck as this was only mandated in 2007 model year and newer trucks (although egr was around before). Moderate throttle produces almost no (visible) smoke from the truck. It is mechanically injected (late 90s) and the system operates at about 20% the pressure of more modern common rail systems
@bluthndr if he tuned it a little he could loose a little smoke and produce more of the legendary cummins power plus the old 12 valve always smokes and there is nothing you can do about it
@bluthndr yea 98 is the p7100 injection pump good engines good pump can make lots of power and in no way produce injection pressures seen on common rails i think the max pressure for a p pump 12v is around 12,500 but a common rail see's 30,000 psi max yea urbex2007 doesnt have a clue just another tree hugger who reads a bit hear and there on diesels and see's the ol dodge a rolling coal and thinks he knows it all well suck it tree huggers you dont know shit
@jonesd5o Early 98 was the ppump, late 98 or 98.5 was the vp pump. I agree, urbex2007 is more than likely a kid in community college reading from a text book. lol
@rangaman86 yea well i think its funny people associate that body style dodge truck and dont realize the that only the gas engines had electronics until the vp44 24v came along and look how far we have come today we have dpf doc scr urea injection and common rails and diesels that you can barely hear running sure i miss the good old days or rattle can 12v with straight pipes sounds like a mix between a jet engine and a damn coffee can full of bolts but thats the sound a real diesel guy likes
@jonesd5o Haha thats the sound mine makes!! I just put a straight pipe on it. All I can say is wow. With the chip off it sounds like a big rig coming down the road, with the chip turned up it vibrates your eardrums!! Sounds amazing but I don't think its going to last, cops will eventually put an end to my fun.

Next you need to fix the fuel pressure problem. The black smoke is unused diesel from the combustion process (or a completely blocked air filter which would give an error code). Excess diesel causes damage and makes exhaust valves stick open, reducing power. It soots up the turbo, manifold, egr, cat and dpf. Diesels producing real power do not smoke as the maximum amount of fuel that fits in to each cylinder is combusted. smoke=broke, learn about engines and ignore the boy racers who are thick.
@urbex2007 - Show me a diesel that makes 1.5hp+/cubic inch and I will show you a smoker. More fuel = more power = more smoke, unless you are Gale Banks and have a multimillion dollar testing facility and a staff of engineers, which I am guessing you do not. Educate yourself with reality and experience before you go on an ignorance bash and insult people's work the next time you pick up a magazine ad/article and become an instant "internet expert" mechanic.
@bluthndr Gotta remember, gale banks runs so much nitrous in his drag trucks he could blow up all of youtube!! Thats why his trucks don't smoke! Nice truck friend!!
@urbex2007 Wow dude your ignorance about diesels is ridiculous. Where the hell did you copy and paste that from? In the diesel world smoke= lots of horsepower
@urbex2007 dont think theres a feul pressure problem with this truck considering its smokeing meaning its a lilttle overfueled which with the p pump is how you make power by adding fuel to get less smoke ud need more air. the mechanical injection systems on these trucks are far superior to the shitty fuckin computerized peice of shit trucks they make nowadays with there egr, dpf and def systems that i bet wont last half aslong as the older diesles not to mention u cant work on the new 1s
@urbex2007 dude your pretty much an idiot who do you work for cat or detriot? besides lack of fuel pressure white smoke not black timing issue maybe but not on this truck it might be a bit to advanced but no harm no foul if it aint pooped a head gasket itll be alright and second egr was introduce with the 2003 emmisions dpf 2007 and no cause of dumb fucks like you we have scr in 2010 guess wich system i dis like most the answer may surprise you
@urbex2007 so if what you said was true, why does a modified diesel pulling truck putting out over 2,000 hp smoke? about the only thing you have right is that the smoke is unburnt fuel.
@Venom746 That is/was a 4.5" SkyJacker kit, plus about 3", plus a 3" body lift. Tires were 39.5 Boggers on 16.5x12 Welds. You can pretty much run a 35" tire with just a body lift if you really wanted to. I have another 98 12-valve that I got with 35s on it. I think it had about a 4" suspension kit (only) on it and it works well with 35s or 33s. Now running 38" MTZs on 18x10 wheels, but the Boggers rocked in the the sand & look way cooler. The MTZs are lots quieter and last 3x longer.
@sleepybone321 I would say no - this one is my first and the engine had 120,000 miles on it when I bought it. I have since owned 3 more trucks that performed perfectly with almost 300,000 miles on them. I have talked to several guys who pull trailers that have over 500,000 miles on theirs and one with over 750,000 miles. The engine will outlast everything around it... Hope that helps.
@sleepybone321 320 aint bad ive had a 95 12v and a 99 24v and both are over that with no issues except the garbage auto trannies cummins last forever as long as u maintain them and dont run the shit outta em
@sleepybone321 - I have owned 5 Cummins Dodges, and the lowest mileage one have 130K miles. I have seen guys get 500,000 to 800,000 miles without overhaul. Hope that helps.
i have the 98.5 24v of that truck, except i think only difference is the bed..i have the longbed and yours is short..but still sweet ass rig man gotta love the 12v'ers
@bluthndr what kind of tires and lift kit are you running...im thinking of bringing my truck up 4'' so my tires will fit and i can get 35's if i wanted to..
