REO just isn't the same since Cronin kicked out Richrath. Cronin, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Kicking Gary out was the WORST thing you could have done. All of REO's albums (since Gary's departure) have FAILED to even chart!!!
Seen 'em about half a dozen times around the Rockford, Illinois area, they were always regular and affordable until they went all bubblegum with Hi Infidelity and became a commercial success. If you ask me their best stuff was from Nine Lives and before.
They could bring down the house in the late 1970's....any house, I seen 'em outside, inside, and in small theatres. They were great...thanks.
I remember this concert well. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (Ronnie James Dio vocals). I was so close Gary's sweat was hitting me. There were cameras everywhere filming for the "Midnight Special". At the end of the show I nabbed a drumstick thrown in the crowd. Used it as a window stop at my first apartment in Springfield, MO. Forgot to take it wth me when I moved. Thanks for the post!
Gary Rossington, what was I thinking? Sorry! You CAN see Larry and I at 2:28 and 5:45. He is the big guy in the overalls. This was the forth and final time I saw REO. Still have the concert ticket delano if you want to see it. Ask anybody from Lexington, MO if that is us. Also in the "Say You Love Me" video on here.
I was at this concert. It was filmed for the 'Midnight Special' 9/22/78 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, MO. I was standing in close enough to Gary Rossington to feel his sweat. There is a crowd shot of me and a friend at 5:45-5:50 looking to our left, probably at a girl. My friend was killed 3 years later. It was exciting to find this footage.
At 3:42 my delight starts for its peak! along with Let's Be-Bop, Keep the Fire Burning, Take it on the run and In your Letter this tune is one of my best, but as I have rolled with the changes I've learned to love other songs, too. Go on rolling!
i think this is the studio version dubbed over footage of a live concert. doesnt matter though because i like this song. i saw REO in 1980 i think. somewhere around that time.
Why do PEOPLE have to constantly be critical of a music video? It's lip synched, not live? @ 5:50 you can see the audience from the band's point of veiw.....Wait, now I am staring to argue!
You are an idiot my friend, he was that good to recreate the same rhythm as on the album. If you were old enough to know his and the bands history you would no that fact, KID!
This I Beleive Is Actual Concert Audio Just Cleaned Up For A Live Album , Then Redubbed Over Obviously Concert Footage, And Released As An Official Video...
Gary Richrath is a rock GOD!!! One of the best guitarists ever. This band went downhill fast after he left. When I was in high school and for a couple of years after graduation they were on top of the world. I saw them live in Hawaii when I was stationed there in the early 80's.
Hey redden......this is not recorded live......the song you are hearing is from the album (You can Tune A Piano..., etc etc.)....I've seen this video in color before, but I just cant remember.......it was in the '70s, but of course now that I'm 53 my mind goes blank sometimes................dont be mislead by the phoney audience in the background. This version was NOT live.
It might have been filed in the Nine Lives tour, but it's obviously the original recording dubbed with some voices and audience noise. The only live performance with Richarth I've found is the Live Aid video, which was pretty rough but still has his original live guitar - blows away any other version out there.
This was during their Nine Lives (1978) Tour...what a concert! Molly Hatchet open the show and it remains one of the best shows I have attended, wow! In the Top 15
obviously an earlier version of a vid shoot, when they actually played the songs, then dubbed over them not like now when they get you to perform to the song.
If I watched this footage a million times, I'd still want to watch it again. When Gary looks at the camera and says "Baby", it just slays me every time! Nobody plays like Gary.
it was pretty good! it was really really loud. loudest concert i've ever been to. but it was really fun. they are trying to promote their newest album. the older stuff was better.
Awesome--hope to see them again... this song also w/few other's got me thru some tough times as a teen.. will send this song to my son's high school graduation theme page..
Soo glad all "my favs" are back again..took son to Rush.. recently.. He loves it all, right w/Dime, Zakk, Ozz, COB.. etc..
Gary is the man!! Kevin has not done a damn thing without Gary. Kevin killed REO when he got control over the band in the early 90's. All Kevin can do is milk the old songs that Gary wrote for money now.
Thanks for posting this video. It is great to hear the real REO.
i get to see them in ottawa canada april 12th at the scotiabank place along with styx and def lep my youth will be back for a short time yaaaaaaa babeeeee
This was one of my first favorite rock & roll songs, and it's almost lost. Listen to it sometime on stereo. It's a great dance tune. So much for one's wasted youth.
i met kevin Cronin and Gary Richrath and band back stage in late 1980s seemed like real nice guys i got a pic with the band there drummer gave me one his drum sticks
Looks like the "9 Lives Tour" about 2 years before they hit it big with the Hi-Infidelity Album.....still a excellent song! To bad they went down hill after Kevin got his big ego, and fired Gary. Thats why they can't sell cd's anymore and have to tour small arenas. Maybe Kevin should eat a little crow and patch things up.
Yeah..you are right...but People change over time....I am sure Kevin has had a few issues of his own. It's just to bad they have failed to stay where they were in the mid 80's. Being from the East Peoria area (Gary's hometown)...the community has always supported REO..... and the(old) music will always rock
I really feel bad for Gary. He was living here in southern california after he was fired from REO. He was riding his bicycle around town because he wasn't allowed to drive because of all the DUI's. he was jamming with local teenagers. nice guy but just lost. I haven't seen him around in 10 or 15 years so I don't know if he still lives around here. OK, now I'm depressed. lol
I don't agree - from what I've heard, they've all had their problems, especially Neal Doughty who was in a mental hospital at one time. They supposedly rallied around him, but when Gary needed them, where were they? Also, Kevin latched onto a health regime, like the rest, and got mad when Gary didn't follow it. There has to be more to this.
What's not to agree with? Did you not see what I wrote? He LIVED here. He was jamming in a band with kids. He was riding a bycicle around to and from bars. Dude was a complete mess.....rock bottom. This was in the 1990's. Based on what I saw then, I'm shocked dude is still alive. I hope and pray he has gotten help and climbed out of that bottle. Would be great to see him back in REO someday happy and healthy. He was my favorite member. Love his effortless playing style.
He's my favorite too, and I'm very upset he was in that state. I'm just saying his departure from the group may have also included other things, not just his condition. Did you see the VH1 on REO? Gary seemed in alot better condition. From what I've heard, I think he's ok now, I pray for him also. Sorry for the misunderstanding! :-)
4 the record Gary didn't just get let go because of Kevin's or other band memebers egos, he self destucted like many rockers after touring so long. Gary got into boozing & the drug scene in the early 80s & it just got out of hand, he also balloned to almost 300lbs in the early 90s & then just went into reclusion for the next 8yrs or so. He'll occasionally play a small bar gig in Cali, but there's little to no chance he'll ever tour again, that's as much his choice as it is the other guys.
Is this lip-synched? Because, except for the audience, it sounds EXACTLY like it does on the album "You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish", which is the album on which it was first released.
I keep listening to different live takes of this. As a big fan of 60s era rock...beatles, Who, Cream, Zepplin...it's really hard for any 70s. 80s band to compare with them...this is one of the rare exceptions, this band is tight, the vocal style of Kevin is original, Gary is phenominal...doing justice to their gread predecessors. My only regret is that as an engineering nerd, missed their concert while at the Uof A in tucson (had to study...wish i'd flunked just to see them live)
this is the only version of this song I have ever heard. is there a studio version? my favorite song of their's along with riding the storm out, which I also only know of as a live recording. So much better than the cheesy stuff they made in the 80s...
I'm about 98 % sure this is the studio versio synced with a live version, cause it sounds just like the one off "You Can Tune a Piano but you can't tuna fish"
Look at a picture of Kevin Cronin and Gary Ritchrath now compared to what they looked back in '77 or '78 when this was recorded - my they have changed !

Lips ync is when band imitates playing and singning when the phonogram is sounding.
Here we can see that someone removed original live audio from actual concert with stuio version of this song.
When You watching the picteure, its clearly can be seen that band there played live.
Perhaps somewhere must be video with actual live sound.

With all due respect to Gary, he was a hopeless alchoholic and that, not Kevin's ego, probably had more to do with his demise than anything.

If there is somebody who doesn't realize that is the studio sound over a synchronized live show... Buy yourselves some ears...
Anyway, this song is awesome.

I just love Kevin's vocal style, how he draws out the end consonants as long as humanly possible, especially R's.
"Until you poured on me like a sweet sun showerrrrrrrrrrrr..." *lol*

this is the only version of this song I have ever heard. is there a studio version? my favorite song of their's along with riding the storm out, which I also only know of as a live recording. So much better than the cheesy stuff they made in the 80s...
AlfredRusselWallace 4 years ago
I'm about 98 % sure this is the studio versio synced with a live version, cause it sounds just like the one off "You Can Tune a Piano but you can't tuna fish"
