  • This is a very good demo. For all of the misinformed people saying the Mark lll goes for 1500-2500, Lay off the pipe. Really! They go for between 700 and 1200 all day on Ebay.Check it out!! I have both.I paid 900 for my Marklll and it was in excellent condition. My Peavey Ultra was 300 in a second hand guitar store. I love both amps. The Mesa has more growl and the Ultra is a bit more scooped! You cant go wrong either way!!!

  • Peavey sounds much better then the Mesa hands down

  • Choice vid mate!

  • The mesa boogie sounds much clearer and more in your face

  • Is it a mark III simul class? 2xel34 and 2x6l6?

are you running the amp in simul class mode?

  • I'm kinda surprised by the amount of gain you get from the Ultra, and I'm pretty sure the (VHT?) cab has nothing to do with it. What pickups does the Fly have ? And which tubes did you use on this video on the Ultra please ? I just retubed mine, and also have a very expensive guitar so I don't get the difference :p Maybe D tuning + pickups I don't know

  • Peavey!!!!

  • Peavey sounds way better!!!!!!!

  • Holy crap, the Peavey really sounds so much better in this clip.

  • i have my ultra since they put it out, its great but this amp is so hungry for tubes, but when you have fresh tubes in it, plus the 120 Watt BOOM!

  • They actuall sound very similar if not identical.

  • I like to know if the uLTRA Plus can do a blues Allman Brothers type solo in the vein of lets say" Its Not my Cross to bear", or Even something from Albert Collins like""If Trouble were money" How about some great clean tones on the ULTRA. I know the MK III can do all with equal aplomb as I have a MESA QUAD Preamp, and the Mesa 295. Not only can the MK III do kIller Metallica Crunch, and Kirk Hammett solos, but Dickey Betts,Gary Moore, and even SRV live inside. Can the ULTRA do those tones??

  • @ThePhallystorm

Your forgetting to include that the mkIII costs 2500+ bucks, where the ultra is 1500, sometimes even less, so with the remaining 1000 bucks you can buy an amp that has great cleans, and get the best of both worlds, not something that tries to be the best of both, but fails 2ce.

  • @JustSomeRandomNewb a MESA MK III' Rack Mounted' Head on E-Bay sold for $700.00 , a MESA MK III Short Head Sold on E-Bay for $650.00 These are in Excellent condition too.The Combo's would cost a little more though, but we're discussing heads. I have had many 5150s Heads, and combos, and believe it , or not the 60 watt Combo had much more going for it. It was a heavy beast though at 85 lbs.The Ultra's distortion was close to it, but no cigar. The clean tones were no match for any Boogie. Thanks

  • @JustSomeRandomNewb $1000? In which dimension? A high priced Ultra Plus 120 head will run you around $500-$600. I've heard of people getting them for $300 or less. Best way to listen to these clips is to jump back and forth between the tones. I think the mesa sounds tighter. Does it sound $1500 tighter? ehh...

  • Can anyone comment on how the Ultra compares with the XXX? Any info would be appreciated.

  • i have one of these peaveys picked it up uses for $400..... and my tone vaporizes small animals.... mesa is gay as hell.... the fact that any american peavey tube head is cheap is only a bonus, they outperform mesa in every category, except for the gainless flabby, nickelback/creed bullshit category. To get the tone i have from my ultra out of a recto you need a gain boost from a OD pedal and a 31 band eq. This is just to get the recto up to par.....

  • Wow dude you are f'n GOOD.

I really like the chunky sound of the Mark III rhythm channel

  • I don't know if the Mesa is all original but if it is you have to remember it is 20 years old or more and the caps are probably not up to spec anymore. I have a 1985 Mark 3 and it does not sound as crunchy as it did new cause the caps are definitely weak and need replacing.

  • The Peavey LIGHTS UP. That alone makes it worth it.

  • I am going to have to go with the Peavey, but the mesa does kick ass they both have there own voices. Not a big Peavey fan but I like it better

  • This made me buy a Peavey Ultra Plus...thank you

  • Peavey sounds better... and also rhythm channel .... play a solo hahahahahahaaha

    I hate MESA

  • -watch the video

    ...and the winner is...

    -look at the price tag

    ..peavey!

honestly, mesa does a bit sound better, but its costs like 3 times as much as this peavey, so if we look for bang for the buck, ultra is the way to go

  • MESA CRUSHES the Competition. You have to be Deaf not to hear the Mesa's complexity, and harmonic juiciness. The MESA has more dynamics, and you better be good like this Guy playing, cause a Mesa is Unforgiving when it comes to clean technique like this Guy here.Much more mature sounding , and again very DYNAMIC!!!

  • Maybe it was the settings, but the MESA seems clearer. I can hear the quality of the notes, whereas with the Peavey I hear more "fuzz". Two great amps, though.

  • Ultra for rhythm + Mark III for leads = WIN

  • dont get me wrong i love mesa but peavey has more of a mean sound but i think a dual rec would win

  • dont get me wrong i love mesa but peavey has more of a mean sound

  • what are your mark iii settings?

  • Who care which one is better, they both sound great...really great. Ultra is one of Peavey's old rare gems nowadays, the predecessor of 5150. If you find one, get it.

  • the mark III sounds way better i don't know what most of you are talking about. the mark III sounds thick and cuts through nicer

  • @FallIntoWinterr

    sounds like mud

  • I don't get it, my Ultra+ even on Ultra channel with max gain doesn't even reach the tone and gain you get on the crunch channel... And my guitar is a 2K+€ Custom Shop so ... I absolutely don't get it... I remember having more gain when I first bought it (several years ago), must be the tubes. But still, yours sound very well ...

  • @snasdante

definitely your tubes man. get your peavey the tubes it deserves!

  • Wow! The Ultra ate the Mesa up and spit it out big time! Pretty impressive for a head that went for 700$ brand new and goes for 400$ used.

  • @ScoojoX

if you're lucky, you can find them for cheaper. I got my Ultra plus for 150 bucks

  • they sound pretty close except the ultra sounded tighter! people dont understand guitar amps dont cost that damn much to build. you usually pay for a brand just like clothes.

  • Comment removed

  • I prefer the sound of the mesa

  • I see a lot of people saying the Mesa Boogie is better. You people do realise that the Peavey was first don't you? How anybody can say the Mesa Boogie sounds better is beyond me.

  • HA HA HA that Peavey didn't stand a chance against that old Mesa Boogie!!!

  • sure mesa markIII / markIV heads are the only ones i really like of the mesa lineup of the last 20 years and theyre really damn good amps, but actually the peavey ultra plus is some kind of kick ass godfather of raw solid amps for doing some brootals, its only made for shred and fistfuck, not very versatile in comparison to the most of mesas amps but hell peavey amps are a way of life, there is no coexist!

  • The Boogie is the clear winner here! As soon as he switched to the lead channel, the Peavey was done.

  • hey i was woundering about getting this. Can you really get one of these for 150-200?, if so where. I want to get a good quality amp to replace my old one.

  • The Boogie sounds darker, more bass heavy, and has a slightly smoother top end. The Ultra sounds like it has a more aggressive gain structure, and a rawer mid range character and a slightly more "sizzly" top end. I like both amps, but I have too say the Ultra is more of what I would go for in an amp today, though for leads the Boogie sounded SOOOO smooth.

  • I prefer the Boogie, even though the Ultra+ is really, really good for the money...

  • Dude you're a hell of a player! Much Respect Man! Im a Mark III fan, I currently own one, the red stripe model, and I love it, and have never had an amp that whooped this much ass!

  • I've likely commented on this vid but great demo. I've got a markIV and have owned three ultra plus' and will own one again. It is likely one of the greatest inexpensive amps around. Cheers, LUcius

  • Love both the amps but I am an old timer, I am a VERY proud owner of a 1989 Peavey Triumph Ultra 120 head and I just re-tubed it which for an amp that old sounds as great as the day as it was made by Peavey.

You can't beat the quality or durability of that Peavey Head.

I hope all your equipment serves you as well as this Peavey has done, freshly re-tubed and ready to start another 20 something years of music

Keep on hammering, your talent is great and you sound excellent

  • hey Im thinking about getting one of those B212 cabs... compared to a standard 4x12 is there a significant loss of volume or bass? according to other forums, there isn't...

  • i dont really like amp distortion i just need an amp head with a good clean channel does anyone have any suggestions for an affordable amp head?

  • @marrag1 Line 6 makes good heads with great clean settings and they're pretty much inexpensive.

  • peavey is great but the boogie has tightness, with a full bodied semi compressed tone; it"s an overall better amp but the peavey is no joke; Its also great to see to USA companies battle it out other than the other crap; electric guitar was invented here and no where else!!!!

  • Guys, the Peavey is really OK. And for the price is awesome. But, truth to be told, there are a lots of variations.

First, the Mk. III is like 20 years OLDER than the Peavey, and sounded as modern and as cool and the Peavey. PLUS, the Mark III is MORE reliable (components and design) and overall best sounding, and lots more versatile. You can dial pretty much any distortion with its EQ; reverb in those are killer too.

  • The Demo was great, but there were similar settings so you can see the Peavey can nail some of the highest gain setting of the Mark III. Any new, budget tube amp better do that, because they would be 20 years outdated. Still, the MkIII is a lot better sounding in lots of areas that weren't show in this demo, more versatile and can be shaped into basically any sound u want. Like any clean, reverb, etc etc.

  • @ShinDanne this particular ultra was only made 1 or 2 years and it was early, very early 90's. no way the mk III is very much older - certainly not 20 years. As for reliability goes my ultra plus, which is the amp in this video, still sounds just like this today. it's all a matter of opinion I guess but these amps sound very close and yes there could have maybe been some tone shaping done to either head but this got a great point across that if the ultra is just ok then so is the mk III

  • peavey's amps always tend to sound a bit nasally to me. i owned a 5150 for awhile, really snappy hi end.

  • One of the best comparisons/ demos on You Tub. VERY well done. And, holy crap can you play your ass off! Hey, one question - I just got a Mark III head (red stripe).... is it possible to get the tones you had in this video AND a nice clean?

  • The Peavey sounds really good!

  • The peavey is soooo beety. I just snagged the head for 150 bucks today! I'm the luckiest man in the world

  • The mesa takes it for definition, shape and as mentioned below, the lead tone.

That Peavey impressed me though for its metal savagery. The rhythm tone sounded pretty close. Same type tubes...?

  • I'm hopefully getting and ULTRA+ tomorrow... this video helped me decide for sure.

  • Pull volume and set to 10 , Pull Master, Pull Bass but set low, And use a Shit load of Distortion on a boogie. It sounds very weak with your settings you need to EQ it better

  • Peavey ultra plus wins.

  • mesa sounds better especially on lead, on rythim it looked like you were lazy to play the same for third time palm mutes on mesas overall sound with alot more balls

  • The Ultra is the winner, IMO.

But, now the true test: Ultra+ Vs Triple Rec. =P

  • I have an Ultra Plus. How much for the Mesa????Peavey rocks....

  • what do you think is better? the peavey ultra plus or the peavey 6505+ for metalcore?

  • very nice pual gilbert tone with the solos man.

  • I like the Peavey Ultra series amps. For heavy metal they are better than Mesa MkIII for sure, if that's what you're into. For high flying solo tone the Mesa is better. The clean on both the Mesa and Peavey are just okay. The Mesa is a little better clean. They've both got that ear splitting mid range that can't be dialed out unless you play on the neck pick-up. But the Peavey's much cheaper.

  • I have played every amp out there, diezel, mesa, krank, engl, bugera, marshall, hughes, you name it...and none have compared to the sound or price of the ultra plus imo

  • Like them both, but that Ultra just has something wicked going on.I used to have one back in the 90's when they came out.Should never have let it go ! Nice playing too.

  • The Mark III is meaner and more defined. The lead channel has a lot more balls

  • dude i like the peavey better i am looking into buying one.

  • the ultra is a beast.

one of the best 6L6 amps there is no matter the brand or cost.

  • a VERY close call, but im gonna have to go with peavey.

  • I love peaveys, probably the best sounding amps in their price range and even steals the crown from some of the boutique brands.

  • mesa rules!

  • The Mesa's pretty fat sounding. Why didn't you just have it in standby while playing the Ultra? Don't kill your Mesa!

  • That Peavey Ultra sounds f*cking brutal! =)

I could buy it for a good price last year... I should have done that...

  • Wow, that peavey held its own against an amp that is worth 3 times as much

  • @M1K3999 Before Mesa released the Mark V, the Mark III was only about $800, $1000 tops. Since Mesa released the Mark V, the Mark IIC+ and Mark III have gone up in price by about $1000. Mark III red stripe now is typically $1800, which is retarded IMHO.

  • @forestofrencho Bullshit. I bought a Mark III in ming condition from a famous underground music store for $699. I regularly see Mark III combos going for 600-700 dollars, never higher.

  • @megatoned The fuck, I guess its only expensive online. All the Mark IIIs I see on ebay or the like are around $1800. I guess I have to buy local if I want one. It sucks I live in a place with one fail ass music store. Have an awesome time with the Mark III, BTW, what stripe is it?

  • @M1K3999 3 times as much? I didn't know the peavys were only 300 bucks used. Not bad

  • Mesa>All

  • MESA/BOOGIE IS BEST

  • you can play some geeetarr my friend

  • Peavey sounds bigger and more complex.

  • Care to share your settings for the Ultra on both the crunch and lead settings?

  • I haven't owned the Ultra Plus since May, but my settings where something like: Gain (Crunch) - 7 Gain (Lead) - 6 Bass (Crunch) - 7 Bass (Lead) - 8 Middle (Crunch) - 8 Middle (Lead) - 4 Treble (Crunch) - 7 Treble (Lead) - 6 Resonance - Mid Reverb - 2
  • hey man, you might want to let that amp warm up first! you can seriously damage your amp that way. but the boogie sounds great. beautiful playing too.

  • @Pr0GMuzik12 you won't damage the amp but it will sound marginally better.

  • Besides the 5150 and Classic series, I strongly believe the Ultra plus is the best amp peavey has ever built. Much better than it's newer brother, the XXX. Still has that signature peavey sound(In the upper mid frequencies) but man it roars.

  • Mesa= just bass, not as much harmonic overtones, harder to add high frequencies in a mix.(harder to add whats not already there)

Peavey=More higher frequencies and overall tone, id say more likely to get a good recording easier.

  • The Mesa sounds kinda farty. Not really sure which one I like better on the rhythm.

  • I prefer the markIII's extrra headroom. It had a grainier rhythm tone that i really enjoyed.

  • the sound really similar to me... i'd take either of them.

  • would you recommend this amp instead of a peavey XXX

  • i mean would you recommend the peavey ultra plus instead of a XXX

  • Comment removed

  • What pickups are in the the Parker? Sounds heavier than what I imagined a Parker would sound like.

  • These both sound pretty nice. That shredding on the Mark is really driving me to want one. I like the articulation and how clear it sounds. You mus play accordingly im sure also.

  • Would an Ultra Plus compliment a Mark III better than say, a JCM 800 or a Recto-O-Verb? It's cheaper.

  • If you want to know check out Intruder a higher form of killing that album happend to be recorded using a mesa mark iii and a peavey ultra

  • you have to figure tube qyality is different to.the mesa has good tubes from the factory. with cheap unbiased tubes any amp will sound different

  • Love ultra plus!!!

  • sick playing dood i really liked the neoclassical stuff awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I go with Mesa but good sound from the peavey though

  • The Mark III is less forgiving of your playing because of its articulation.

  • hey whats your settings for the mesa? got a mk iii black dot myself

  • Mesa mark iii simul class. The best sounding, most versitile amp ever made.

  • I was looking for a used Dual Recto when I stumbled across a very cheap Peavey Ultra. To my ears it sounds even better than the Recto for only a third of the price.

  • yeah peaveys make pretty good amps. some are even better than mesas in my opinion, and half the price. like 6505

  • The Peavey sounds fuller

  • I agree, but It sounds like the Ultra has more mids in this vid, maybe it's the settings?

I wish I had both to compare myself. :)

  • It sounds like the peavey is a little tighter in the low end?

  • Hey man Love the tone man. I have a Mark 3 too.. would you mind telling me your settings for ur mark III lead tone.. I love it man.. I know its quite a hassle since there are so many switches.. Thank you Much appreciated man..

  • Wow, they sound very similar. It's hard to believe you can pick up a used Ultra Plus head for so cheap (if you can find one). Do they sound this similar when actually standing in front of them rather than through Utube?

  • Wow, that Mark III is amazing! I never knew Mesa had anything like that in the pre Rectifier era. Now if I could only afford one...

  • Recto is just a Soldano SLO100, while Mark series is the greatest things developed by uncle Smith.

  • Groove Tubes I think.

  • Not even close the Mark III has more bite

  • Just one detail missing: how about the clean channel of Ultra Plus?

  • Sorry, I didn't bother demoing the clean channels. The Mark III doesn't have a great clean with the settings I had there, and the Ultra Plus had a really flat, bland clean sound.

  • Does Mark III have a clean channel at all? That's the actual value of Ultra Plus for me. I think if I lost mine, a Satriani signature Peavey amp would be my choice, for the clean channel.

  • Who cares about the clean, if you want that get a fender. These are high gain amps

  • I like the combination of these three different channels of Ultra Plus, I didn't mean I was using only the clean one.

  • My point is that a person looking for a good clean channel wouldnt buy either of these amps. Only those looking for distortion would buy either

  • Sorry for this neverending debate, I just refuse to believe that the clean (or any) channel of Ultra+ sucks. Just got home from my rehearsal room, ears still ringing. Acoustic simulation or outer space Moogerfooger soundscapes, the clean channel just rocked! The high gain channels can't reproduce those low frequencies... a Fender combo might have blown its speakers out :D What comes to high gain, my 50W '76 Marshall head tends to rip peoples' ears off, but a power attenuator does magic.

  • While the cleans on the Ultra Plus were decent, I really wasn't making this demo for the purpose of showing the clean channel of the amps.

  • The one thing I love about your tone and soloing is that you can hear your pick attack. It sounds real cool.

  • Lil' update: Well, I must like the Mark III better then the Ultra Plus, cos' I sold the Ultra Plus, but kept the Mark.

  • ultra seems easier to play for you, tone is subjective i know, but to me the ultra sounds better and fits your playing style much better. nice grab dude. lovin my 5150 II.

  • I think the Peavey has more of a gritty sound but the Mark III is way more articulate and has a more pleasing tone overall. I can hear your pick attack on your solo when you switch to the neck pickup on the Mark III. The Boogie is a lot warmer too. The Peavey sounds quite grainy and throaty while the Mesa sounds a bit fuller in the mid range. different strokes for different folks.

I own a Mark III and a Peavey Ultra 60 myself and the Mark III is so brutal yet beautiful.

    Great playing!!

  • Nice, Mark III wins fersure. I got my new cab, and have some clips if you wanna hear them, just PM me. It's a Randall R412XLT with V30's. Since when have you had an Ultra?

  • I bought one at the start of last month.

  • you are one lucky bitch, nice comparison

  • i hav a mark III i love it ive played on peaveys befoore at da guitar store and they sound pretty good nice riffs by the way

  • I know my peavey transtube has more gain on tap then my mark III. but with a dry compressor and a boost with delay...man it can't be beat...unless its a Mark IIC+ or Mark IV

  • I think the Mark III sounds better than the Mark IV. The latter sounds a little drier.
