While I have not missed an RT show in Chicago since 74 I do think he has at least 2 challengers to Daycron's claim in the persons of Robert Hunter and Ian Anderson. O I know Ian is 40 years removed, at least, from being a fashionable choice, and many "in the know" would claim to the extent any of his output is worthwhile, that it ceased in 70 at Benefit, I would claim with my remaining letters that they are dead wrong. O to reduce it to sport with final scores, Duke Ellington as judge.
If everyone is nominating favourite RT song can I put in a word for Cold Kisses? However I agree that there are so many that each week could be a different one. Another real favourite is God loves a drunk. And for an upbeat one how about I feel so good?
RTs Best Song? A pointless debate as there are very few that would not be considered - it depends on mood. As a straight Folk Song I'd nominate Woods of Darney because no body else has!
RT's basically written this song a million times: "I'm bad news, honey, stay away, I can't love anyone and I'll just crush you." But it seems fresh and heartbreaking almost every time. Example number 134,786 here.
Hm, now that I've read the lyric, I might have misinterpreted it because of a few misunderstood phrases. This is more in the "I just had my heart torn out of my chest" genre.
Let me put in a vote for "The Ghost of You Walks": talk about exquisite craftsmanship . . . And then there's the perfect arrangement on the album version: whose breath doesn't stop when that bowed bass comes in on the "Blue murder on the dancefloor" section?
People shouldn't give you negative points for your point of view. It's funny how people thing his best work was with Linda, but they adore Vincent Black Lightning. That was recorded ten years after the split.
How do you know what everyone is thinking? I've always liked RT's music regardless of who he's been playing with...somethings I like more than others.
Because I have been talked down to by other RT fans who say "I don't know anyone who doesn't immediately love Linda!" They say I'm the only one, and that I'm insane.
Funny how he can take something as worn out as Goldilocks, put it in a personal perspective, and make it a great song. That's just as good as Hendrix taking the Star Spangled Banner and making it interesting again.
That's a classic, and it would be in my top five but my pick would be Meet on the ledge, from his Fairport years, but in all honesty their are so many finely crafted songs, ask me next month and my answer may be different.
Yes, the Fairport songs are wonderful and Meet On The Ledge is timeless. I agree that anything he does is a potential favorite and my #1 changes often also. Next week it could be Take Care the Road You Choose or Galway to Graceland.
Yep i agree with you, a song about womens roles in industry back in the day. after your comment i listend to it for the first time in a while, a worthy album.
Too many excellent choices: "Gypsy Love Songs", "Al Bowley's in Heaven", "Don't Tempt Me", "When the Spell is Broken", "Jenny My Love" , "Long Dead Love", "Small Town Romance", "Calvary Cross", "Crazy Man Michael", "MGB-GT" and the list goes on....
One could disappear up ones own arse in a spiral of songs by RT, they are all good, some are very good, most are great, and with Richard you know there is more to come, an absolute genius, he wouldn't agree, he's far to modest.
What's your favorite this month? I'm going with "Happy Days and Auld Lang Syne". It grows on you with repeated listenings. I think it will be my request at the Montalvo show in December.
A truly beautiful song. Amazing. It just strikes a chord with me. Thank you for posting this performance.

From the mid-60's right up until NOW, this guy has been a brilliant songwriter. No one else has even come close to sustaining such brilliance.

Good thing RT insisted the boy child learn the dulcimer and not just the guitar. He was thinking ahead.

I much prefer Richard Thompson as a solo singer than to have to listen to that stern, boring ex-wife of his.

I have been listening to this song since it came out and I never noticed that.. I guess that means, like Hendrix, he made it his own!
