@gingerjoedavis That was a recording tip from Ben Folds. I was getting a lot of hi-hat bleed into my snare mic and was having trouble getting my snare to sound focused and snappy. Ben suggested trying that and it worked!

@WeWearCompassion Short answer: Yes. Recording cymbals separately allows me to compress the drums without having to worry about the cymbals taking over the mix. It also enables me to play more solidly and express more complex ideas than I would be able to execute if I had to play everything all at once.
