I cannot express how dissapointed am I to own a 6.4L, mine ran fine for about 100 hours after that problems after problems: very poor fuel economy (about 7mpg), ticking noise (+/- @1500rpm) about 8 regens per tank (ridiculous but true), diesel blending with oil, coolant leaking, bad radiator, rain water enter the cab (rear sliding window), problems with CD changer, bushing that insolates the cab, broken hoses ...etc. I stopped driving the damn thing because I have fear to break something else.
Forgot to add: I own it sinse new 2008 job1 f-450 only 1000 engine hours and 27xxx miles. Currently is parked in my yard since 10/26/2011. I refuse to drive it because I don't trust that POS.
I own 2 6.0l fords (both have egr deletes, change fluids way too often) and will never buy another ford diesel until they get there act together. imo, I shouldn't be afraid to pull anything with my truck because it might break.
My God that is an expensive truck and motor to have blow up on you. Geez! I have a 2000 7.3 F350 and I maintain the heck out of it and go easy on it. Who needs this sort of problem? Man!
Question...our 08' 6.4 seems to be racing, the rpm's will increase suddenly, and occassionally stall. It will restart, no problem. Seems to "race" 3 times a day, and stall maybe once or twice a day. Its ran 10+ hours a day, 6 days a week. We are good on maintenance, always changing fuel filters every 2 oil changes. Thinking maybe the filters were bad, I changed both the fuel and oil filters last week. Hasn't stalled, but still wants to race. Any ideas what could be going on?
I'd hate to own one of these POS. Talk about a nightmare from hell. Alot of people thought that the 6.0 is bad, but these 6.4 engines are truely a POS. I stay with my 6.0 engine. I see alot of individuals dumping these 6.4's once they reach 100,000 miles, once out of warranty. Nice work my the way!
@civicboy123 Honestly, i know everyone thinks these engines are crap, but does any one remember the Gm 6.5, they couldn't keep heads on them with 5lb boost, these engines are pushing 30lb stock, In my opinion ford sold a truck that was already "chiped" to the max, it was not a lot of years ago that a diesel around 6.0l would only produce around 100hp naturally aspirated, and if you were lucky 150 turbo'd
@EFSforkliftguy The 6.4 just like the 6.0 is a good engine once you get all the bugs worked out of it. Get all the emissions shit off the engine and allow it to breath and she'll be good to go. The GM 6.5 was a gutless wonder but seemed to be pretty reliable without a turbo. Just like everything mechanical, each thing has its breaking point.
what was the milage on the three trucks cause that gray on didnt even look that old i love fords my self ive herd alot about this isue and its kind of unbleaveable just cause ford usly makes really quality stuff
@mstep3 These and the 6.0 powerstrokes utilize EGR coolers that are prone to failure and leak coolant into the combustion chamber and hydrolock the engine. They're also known for injectors leaking down excessively and all sorts of other problems.
@franks0dam0adress same here 332,000 on my 7.3 runs great doesn't leak or use oil no problems with it at all. the biggest killer on these new diesels is the emissions crap. 7.3 didn't have any of that junk, but thats why they had to stop making them because they are too dirty and fail emissions.
@franks0dam0adress its not really the motors themselves its all the weak ass emissions equipment the 7.3 didnt really have any of that. take all the emissions off and these motors are fantastic..i'm holding out for 6.7 longevity, love my 6.0.
@f350powerstroke well its a number of things... you can thank you US government for most of them. to meet the emmisions it has to run much hotter than is prefered, also they are forced to ingest there out soot, which can reek havoc in a modified motor.
The way you guys have all the removed engine parts strewn around the ground in the open air environment does not bode well for the quality of the repairs performed at this facility.
