IMO the dresses are not hideous. They are simple, in this case simplicity was best. In close-up pictures you can see the beautiful detailing of the wedding dresses. They're royals, they cannot wear strapless and flashy gowns like other women. Otherwise they would've become any other bride.

I think the fabrics used to create the dresses were very expensive. Most of the dresses were made of silk, chiffon, and expensive lace.
