A SONGTRESS and STYLIST of song "EXTRAORDINAIR" --- Ms. FANCY will ALWAYS rank up there with THE VERY BEST--- (ELLA, DINAH AND BILLY) ---- HER airy, clear, concise melodic fluidity is incomparable. ONE of KIND. A GENUINE and TRUE ARTIST of her craft. PURE and NATURAL--- a SOUL that's been blessed with the gift TO SING with THE ANGELS and then come to earth and touch the HEARTS of ALL. May the MOST HIGH continue keep you in his "CHOURUS of the HEAVENS"--- ALL PRAISES!!!!
Saw Ms. Wilson in NYC last week and it was indeed awesome, she's still got the chops. However, she did announce that after she finished her next show in Ohio this fall would be her last that she was retiring. I came from Georgia to see her and it was the best money spent. It was a wonderful show, I am so glad that I went.
Classy Lady! Great rendition, she is going to be at B.B. King's in NYC, the middle of June this year (Sat. Night), Gonna try to make it to the 'Big Apple' and see her.
protax - thanks for this gem! My mother was a vocalist and Miss Wilson were her idol along with Carmen Mcrae. As a kid, I watched and listened to her practice this and 'The Grass is Greener' for hours. I learned from her (MOM), it was the first 'jazz waltz'. LOVE this and thanks again! Switcherooney...........
I've been a Nancy Wilson fan since 1964 when I first heard her. What a voice. Damn, I just dated myself. It's really cool to see these old songs popping up on Youtube.
@edie19561 Thanks! I am a great Gershwin fan-was watching a documentary about him on PBS recently. My all time favorite Gershwin work is his opera "Porgy & Bess". Where would the American Music be without George & Ira's contributions to the American Songbook. It was so wonderful that he wanted to capture the rhythms & character of African American like in his music. I will definitely be doing more research on the Gershwins in my Advanced Music History course next semester-I love Ellington too!
this song of Nancy Wilson's is fantabulous and so is Ella Fitzgerald's version. Love to listen to Nancy's bossa nova songs if any, like desifinado, the girl from iponema. could soneone oblige. Thanks so much for sharing. Nelum
The money makers don't want to listen, The real music makers are stifled by the sound of ringing tills. There is such a need for a respect for the deeper needs of sophisticated people who love GOOD muic like this. Shame on the childish and greedy music world.
Tks americangalbasseyfan. You must listen to Esperanza Spalding. get her on 'At the White House' she sings' Overjoyed' and with midnight show Letterman 'Precious' You'll be an instant fan. Lemmeknow?
While groups like the sound providers or Hocus Pocus and some others do take some parts from Jazz songs, all they do is loop a very small part of the song and then they "rap" over it which I think most people here are turned off by (including myself).
Thats not entirely true, as there are indeed some of their songs just looped and a bit edited. But there are many songs, where they got real Jazz-Bands playing, less the sound providers, but more Hocus Pocus. Also "The Roots" play their instruments on their own at concerts
I grew up around jazz, and I love it, but I also like real hip hop. I think the two are similar in the improvisation aspect. Rapping came about as spontaneous poetry. Now the media and popular demand have created an ugly monster - a caricature really. Hip hop is all about poetry and production. There is a guy (Soweto Kinch) who plays bebop on sax and also raps. He was mentored by Wynton Marsalis.
@protaxcuts I do like some words they use, some have poetry in it and not just words..just have to dig haha. very true though I sometimes can't stand to listen to them over the real song not their impression.
@protaxcuts It's crazy, but I love Hip-Hop. I really can't understand someone not liking it. I realize most of the commercial stuff that gets played on the radio is mostly anyone hears. I love all music. For example, this type pf jazz, to classical, to almost any genre, and Hip-Hop is the reason for that. Through looking for samples to make beats, and researching the culture it's broadened my horizons to different music that I love, and wouldn't have been into initially.
What chills that you get when you remember those golden days of sounds from the "Big band" and Nancy Wilson's satiny voice. Love her soooo much. Peace and Love to your all. : -)
I'm not sure which Kanye West video is heralding Mr. West as the greatest talent in musical history. A good talent yes, but the greatest definitely not. As a musician myself I can say that pressing two buttons on a "beat machine" does not make you a great musical talent. It may make you very rich because the level of musiceducation of the masses is at an all time low. Its an ignorant statement, especially when we have people like Nancy Wilson, Kanye is no Bach or Mozart make no mistake about it.
@blackmaestro Beautifully said. I love R&B, Soul, Jazz, - Heck my Mom got the Inkspots to give her an autograph on a diner receipt in 1957 - I was raised on beautiful music of all genre's. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is a true testament to the gift of "arrangement" - so take a listen and know that in those days it wasn't technology that made the music it was people and instruments - giving their heart and soul to the process - not pushing a button! As you well know. Kudos!
@blackmaestro are you serious someone or he thinks he is one of the greatest???? Remedy, have a show, shove him out on stage with instruments - not a computer and tell him to play! Simple. A real musician can pick one up and just belt out tunes, no problem.
@blackmaestro I listen to a lot of hip hop, rock and soul, and I do not actually like Kanye West. But his talent (which you state is pressing two buttons on a "beat machine" is far beyond that, producers like him sit weeks in the studio trying to improve just one song. So if you're a musician I think you should already know that. I see this is 2 years ago but still I don't feel West deserved that.
If you love Nancy check out Lush Life 1967, all the old nancy fans know! The orchestrations are fabulous. This is the vintage Nancy. Listen to Lush Life, When the World was Young, and my all time fav-Midnight Sun. The whole disc is great-love Nancy she is the master of phrasing!
Do you know that on the Kanye West section of YouTube there are people responding and making statements to the effect that Kanye West is the greatest talent in musicial history???
Just wanted everyone to know, (go check it out) and burst out laughing, while we pull out our selections from our collections of the incomparable Ms. Nancy Wilson.
I was thinking the same thing. It's because of hip hop and rap, that record companies don't nurture true singers like this anymore. And I guess what I'm getting at is they don't even seem to nurture great talents like Elton John anymore
Nowadays all we get is whore-alikes and lip syncers and people who gyrate their crotch and roll around on stage
@lorenzo129 what you say is so true, and it's something I recognized years ago. Hip Hop ruined rock and roll and further made pop music jazz a separate category of music.
no autotune and still sounds amazing....much better than loads of autotuned stuff these days
