I remember seeing this commerical once back in the 80's and for some reason it just has always stood in my mind. How cool that i found it here on Youtube.
they really made some non PC commercials back then. now, we have to kiss everyones ass to make sure we dont hurt someone's feelings. The United States Of The Offended. pathetic.
I so remember the commercials and the uproar that the Soviets made about them. so funny. NO Political Correctness back then. The DEMTURDS hadnt yet gone commie and started hating America yet. How far the DEM party has fallen since then.
This reflects the truth of the Soviet Union. It would NOT offend a Russian, as Russians hated their communist government more then anyone. If they held a fashion show in the USSR no matter how many thin cute girls there, an ugly, fat one eyebrowed daughter of a party member would be the model!! And there were terrible shortages for all goods, especially clothing and food. There was just ugly grey clothing, and they were afraid to stand out. Thats one reason free Russians enjoy dressing up.
This was never banned - at least in the U.S. It was one of the most popular Wendy's commercials ever. What I DO remember was that shortly after this ad campaign, Mikhail Gorbachev came to power - and his glamorous wife Raisa subsequently made a HUGE impact when it came to correcting the stereotype of the Russian woman; on "Nightline" Ted Koppel commented on how Raisa was certainly not "some big female model in a Soviet fashion show." Raisa: she gave Nancy Reagan a run for her money!
Definitely not banned. By the way, that's a male actor on the catwalk, not a woman. And some of the hottest girls I've known were from behind the former Iron Curtain. No wonder the Soviets were able to steal our secrets so easily.
@sergeontheloose Actually, obesity wasn't nearly the epidemic in the '80s that it is now. It's doubled since 1985, and becoming the major issue that it is 'round the turn of the century. Granted, obesity has been on the rise since the turn of the *twentieth* century, but it's increase has sped up in the last ten years.
OMG - I was searching for this commercial for YEARS !! This has got to be one of the most popular and funniest commercials. And think about it, it is so damn long too. Who produces commercials that are a minute long today. Empress - I agree, we have become so PC that some of the fun and humor are gone. This was a time when we could actually laugh at ourselves in a healthy way.
@RalphRomano2 Actually, I've been looking for this commercial for over 20 years, and now I've found it, I must have watchet it 100 times in the last few weeks.
BTW, after this was made, the Russians had THEIR own fashion show, I'm dying ot find that, I was told they had BEAUTIFUL women...
The Russians can laugh at themselves and yes, we have lost a LOT of humor due to political correctness....
It was not banned, I remember it clearly. Think about it in the context of the more recent "Ground Zero mosque" crap... things really have not changed.
Hey, tracy80sgirl, Are you still on the qualudes, AKA 'Discobuiscuts'? If this commerical (one of my personal favorite funny ones) was banned, how come we call remember seeing it and ROTFLMAO, "Rolling on the floor, laughing my ass off? I mean, really....
This commercial was not banned and it was reported that when it was viewed at the Soviet Embassy in DC, they had quite a laugh. The Russian army 'female' announcer was actually a man because they couldn't find a woman with the stature they wanted. This is one of the all time best commercials ever!! Thanks for the post!!
My girlfriend is Ukrainian. I showed it to her and shes didnt laugh. She watched it and said "Yes this is what it was like" LOL. And when I say Ukrainian I mean still lives there wont leave Ukrainian.
I can't imagine insulting the Russians would be high on the "avoid" list during the Reagan 80s. I saw this on TV a million times and have quoted "is nice!" ever since.
This commercial wasn't banned here. Probably not in USSR either since there weren't any Wendy's...or TV's.

Why would this be banned during the cold war when the cold war was 'against' Russia? America would WANT to be offensive to Russians. Duh.
