Considering that many American athletes have been proven to having used performance enhence drugs in previous Olympic games, I don't think its unreasonable to believe that the 2008 American athletes used drugs as well. @mixermake Their argument is that the Chinese team cheated and allowed a 12 year old to compete. The reason being is that a girls upper body strength can reach its peak before puberty. This allows them a advantage in gymnastics because greater upper body strength key to be a great gymnast. Now obviously this wouldn't apply to track for obvious reasons. Did China cheat? I don't know and I really don't care all that much it's not the end of the world. At least for me.

It follows jiang yuyuan and deng linlin. they tell their ages, i believe this documentary was filmed in 2004. jiang yuyuan says that shes 12 then, that would make her 16 for 08. This was made before she was considered talented enough for them to take the risk of faking her age...
i dont know about he kexin, but jiang yuyuan was the right age.

@tmwalkerm Isn't it strange that china is only accused of using underage gymnasts if they actually won something? In 2004 their team looked just as young as the team in 2008 but noone would bother about it since they didn't win anything in 2004.

flexibility is trained , when i was young i dont remember me being flexible. when you're younger you are weaker not as much strength and not as much experience than the older gymnast.
i've seen obese 3 year olds, so being young doesn't really makes u flexible or lighter or smaller. the weight of a gymnast is her own responsibility. any woman can be 30 years old and still have 100 pound frame if they have the willpower. so the point is china won fair and square.

You know i have been seeing a lot of rising anti-american statements against us lately. Yes, i admit, many of my countrymen have made ugly statements against the Chinese girls team. But not all of us, for example, i consider myself a huge fan of He Kexin. I loved her spirit and athletism. And you were right, the Chinese girls were superior, and they will be a force in the future. Any way how are the girls doing?
If you think about it, it's surprising that Deng Linlin's age isn't being questioned but it makes sense in a way because she didn't participate in individual rounds.
I think Deng Linlin looks much younger than He Kexin & Yang Yilin but of course, looking young or someone's height doesn't prove age... why her age isn't highlighted is interesting though but maybe if she won an individual medal...
But Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan, and He Kexin's ages were brought into question before the olympics started, meaning some form of evidence was found for them, but not Deng Linlin. She looks younger than the other girls, but that doesn't mean she is. I don't think it has anything to do with the individual medals.
Their age were never questioned to the point it is now. From watching the other competition they've participated in atleast two years prior to the Olympics, noone ever mentioned their age but they did say how 'small' these girls are. They never received the disrespect and inconsideration they received during the Olympics either.
I'm not questioning their age. I don't think they are underaged because of their appearrance either.
What I'm saying is Deng Linlin is smaller and look MUCH younger than Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan and He Kexin and surprising for me that people have questioned those three's age without mentioning Deng Linlin. They've always acknowledged someone with a 'missing tooth' but never said who and maybe because they don't really know or care of her since she didn't win any addition medals.

I agree with that. Obviously it only makes sense that the age thing was brought more into question after the girls won individual medals because otherwise protesting it wouldn't make a difference. Right now the protesting is done to argue that China cheated and the girls should be stripped of their medals. If they hadn't won there would be nothing to complain about.
And I guess it only makes sense that the media talks about Deng Linlin's missing tooth without attributing it to her. It makes
their case stronger. And since the whole thing is speculation anyways they can arrange the facts however they want to create the most interesting story.
The media treated these girl with such disrespect and inconsideration. They continued to accuse the girls of being underaged and ignored their accomplishments. There IS a good chance that these girls are actually 15-16 despite their age and there's a documentary from 2002 where 3-4 of the gymnasts stated their age which makes them eligable for the Beijing Olympics. Of course, people would ignore it...
Until proven, it's all talk. It hasn't been proven and until then, they deserve respect!

well, its at least for shure that jiang yuyuan is not underage, look at the "Dream Weavers, Beijing 2008" Documentary.
It follows jiang yuyuan and deng linlin. they tell their ages, i believe this documentary was filmed in 2004. jiang yuyuan says that shes 12 then, that would make her 16 for 08. This was made before she was considered talented enough for them to take the risk of faking her age...
i dont know about he kexin, but jiang yuyuan was the right age.

@russiangymfan Considering that the 2000 Chinese athletes were proven to be underage, I don't think its unreasonable to believe that the 2008 athletes ages were forged as well. The Chinese team officials seem to think that its alright to cheat and deserve to get penalized for it, has nothing to do with being sore losers. If you cheat, you have to suffer the consequences, simple as that.

@tmwalkerm Isn't it strange that china is only accused of using underage gymnasts if they actually won something? In 2004 their team looked just as young as the team in 2008 but noone would bother about it since they didn't win anything in 2004.
I think people should just stop complaining and accept the results as they are.

Some Advice, do not overgeneralize and stereotype Americans...Not all of us feel the same about the Chinese/particular competition...There is no need to exchange racial slurs and other derogatory comments....Everyone is entitled to their opinion...

flexibility is trained , when i was young i dont remember me being flexible. when you're younger you are weaker not as much strength and not as much experience than the older gymnast.
i've seen obese 3 year olds, so being young doesn't really makes u flexible or lighter or smaller. the weight of a gymnast is her own responsibility. any woman can be 30 years old and still have 100 pound frame if they have the willpower. so the point is china won fair and square.

Pot isn't a performance enhancing drug, though it is banned during the olympics.
Obviously with the large number of medals he won, and the records he set they would have tested him for eveything possible. He payed his time of being suspened for a few months. The scandal about the ages was garbage! It put a damper on the glory of the chinese women's gymnastics team. Everyone will know them as the " chinese gymnastics team that might have been underage" but it's obvious they arent!!

lol nah i dont think it is that really!!! cuz i have always been really short and look young for my age!! im like 4'8 and almost 25 yrs old. and im not over weight. but you can tell the difference when there is a 10-12 year old standing next to me and the age difference. i teach gymnastics w/ lots of girls. they are a lil taller than me or close. but u can just tell the age difference by body maturity !!! there was atleast 2 underage chinese on that team

Cheng Fei didn't look sixteen when she competed in Athens. Looks are deceptive. Chinese girls are small enough to begin with. And being gymnasts add an extra decrease in size.

At Jang Yuyuan's Fan Website, her friends and fans are sending her birthday wishes and they all say "happy 17th birthday!" Some even say she is going to be 18 (according to the lunar calendar Chinese use). U.S. media and some fans do not any class and good sportsmanship.

If you think about it, it's surprising that Deng Linlin's age isn't being questioned but it makes sense in a way because she didn't participate in individual rounds.
I think Deng Linlin looks much younger than He Kexin & Yang Yilin but of course, looking young or someone's height doesn't prove age... why her age isn't highlighted is interesting though but maybe if she won an individual medal...

But Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan, and He Kexin's ages were brought into question before the olympics started, meaning some form of evidence was found for them, but not Deng Linlin. She looks younger than the other girls, but that doesn't mean she is. I don't think it has anything to do with the individual medals.

Their age were never questioned to the point it is now. From watching the other competition they've participated in atleast two years prior to the Olympics, noone ever mentioned their age but they did say how 'small' these girls are. They never received the disrespect and inconsideration they received during the Olympics either.
I'm not questioning their age. I don't think they are underaged because of their appearrance either.

What I'm saying is Deng Linlin is smaller and look MUCH younger than Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan and He Kexin and surprising for me that people have questioned those three's age without mentioning Deng Linlin. They've always acknowledged someone with a 'missing tooth' but never said who and maybe because they don't really know or care of her since she didn't win any addition medals.
Yang, Jiang, and He (the three) participated in individual competitions and two managed another medal.

I agree with that. Obviously it only makes sense that the age thing was brought more into question after the girls won individual medals because otherwise protesting it wouldn't make a difference. Right now the protesting is done to argue that China cheated and the girls should be stripped of their medals. If they hadn't won there would be nothing to complain about.
And I guess it only makes sense that the media talks about Deng Linlin's missing tooth without attributing it to her. It makes

The media treated these girl with such disrespect and inconsideration. They continued to accuse the girls of being underaged and ignored their accomplishments. There IS a good chance that these girls are actually 15-16 despite their age and there's a documentary from 2002 where 3-4 of the gymnasts stated their age which makes them eligable for the Beijing Olympics. Of course, people would ignore it...
Until proven, it's all talk. It hasn't been proven and until then, they deserve respect!

Exactly... as for Deng Linlin, I also feel bad for her because not only her teammates being questioned unfairly, her physical appearance is passed as a joke. She can't help it and it's wrong because people tend to be superficial.
I'm not sure if you've seen it but a video on YT that someone posted showed an upclose picture of Deng Linlin. She doesn't have a missing tooth from the picture, it's just behind her other teeths.
