F'ING GREAT! Back in the late 70's a very hip friend in L.A. intro'd me to Magazine. I've been addicted ever since. Even now I have about six of their tracks on my iPod that I must listen to periodically, and this song is the top of the list. Have always loved it! Thanks for posting!!
barry adamson was a real driving force in magazine (not too keen on his solo stuff) john mcgeoch (is that how you spell it?) very underrated! devoto: lyrical genius, 'and i open up like a sliding door, oh so oblique and easy. oh you're so bleak and easy!
Why is there no bass tabs for Magazine on the internet!!! What a wealth of bass lines the man Adamson has produced. I've figured out a few: Permafrost (quite easy but quite brilliant),My Mind Ain't So Open, Feed The Enemy and I'm working this one out now. But I'm only one man, All you tabbers out there, get of your high horse tabbing them 3 note rubbish ones you get today and tab some more of the monumental Barry Adamsons.
@chrisnoaro1 P Orridge? As a bass player? I think either you're on a wind up or trying to be controversial! He was never about making music for the love of music. I'm sure you're well aware that he was always about sonic experimentation. Using the audience as guinea pigs (what happens if I do this?) to induce a collective orgasm, hallucination, euphoria, panic attack, hatred, whatever. Never knowingly melodic or even danceable. Very interesting and highly intelligent individual though
@MisAnnThorpe I knew people would see it as a wind-up, but I nominated him quite seriously. Listen at 1.13 on 'The World Is A War Film' (the version on here that's 7.47 long). He's playing the melody of Three Blind Mice - absurd, surreal and creepy within the context of the spaced out sounds that develop. It's not a noisy or abrasive track but terminally spooky. No one else would play bass like that. Cheers
@chrisnoaro1 I see what you mean, although it's played to the rhythm of Three blind mice, the notes are actually slightly different, very similar admittedly! But in all honesty, I can hear nothing special in this, bass playing wise. Great track though. Are you familar with the band Cindytalk? Cindytalk was/is really Gordon Sharps' project. He also contributed to This Mortal Coil & Cocteau Twins. There's some of their stuff here on youtube. Have a listen, I suspect you may find them interesting.
@MisAnnThorpe Thanks for the tip, I just listened to several Cindytalk tracks, some of it I liked and found very it interesting, quite a similar vibe at times to that TG track as you said. I didn't know Gordon Sharp was involved with Cocteau Twins, been into them for 23 years. Cheers
I saw Magazine in '79 at the Raglan in Wolves - a mere 16 yr old I thought I could play bass better than Mac. If you're listening Howard, sorry I shouted for Boredom, John - I'm not worthy. There. I've said it now.
Anyone noticed that the guitarist (who I think is Robin Simon on this occasion) fluffs the start of the song by playing the intro to "Stuck" ... still fantastic.
SO cool! I've been a fan of this band since a good friend turned me on to them in my L.A. days. I'd recently added this particular song to my iPod and was listening to it today, and it occurred to me to do a search on YouTube for Magazine. Low and behold. My eternal gratitude to you for posting this vid! Now it will be a treat to view the other Magazine vids here!
Wow! So awesome to see Magazine live after all these years. I lived in Christchurch New Zealand in the 80s, and Magazine were booked to play the town hall. My best friend & I raced out to buy tickets and were full of antici....pation, but...! A few weeks before the gig, it was cancelled due to low ticket sales - arghh!!!! So God bless youtube for all the live clips of one of the greatest bands to walk this earth!
This was the era of 'lead bass' player. All those guys like Burnel, Foxton, Pete Hook, Bruce Thomas and Barry Adamson all coming up with these great lines that you could play on your cheap Fender copy and impress your mates. Brilliant!
@foff4strings I do rate Adamson, nearly as good as Derek Forbes but none of these "bass" players have a truly bassy sound. If you're into lead bass playing then you can't get much better than Hendrix's on All along the watchtower. Yes it's Hendrix on bass. Great bassists don't insist on forcing themselves on you, rather they insinuate their way in. Often you feel the note more than you hear it. So much so that a wrong note doesn't necessarily matter, providing it's not off rhythm.
this is an absolute victory for manchester music and the fact this was filmed, in aus,god bless u lets rock to the class sound of magazine, col gibb M9
I work in one of the last indie record stores in London. Have spent the last 20 years telling people that this is pretty much the best song ever. Great lyrics, awesome bassline, even the synth solo rules. Give Me Everything, I Salute You.
This was from the Metropol, Berlin October 30th 1980. Yes it was a whole gig. The complete tracklist and info can be found if you have a google up mate.
When was this performance? HD looks a wee bit older and baldier than the really early clips I've seen from 77 - 78. I see the clip is from German TV channel WDR - any info on the show? Was it a whole concert by Magazine? If so where can it be got hold of?
I've been watching bands live for 30 years(ouch!) and still Magazine performed the best live show of all the performers I have seen at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, ever. Thanks for sharing this.
Man these guys were great! Is this the verion of their live album Play? I've not heard it in well over a decade, but god it still sounds just as great. Glad it one of the few pieces of vinyl i hung onto!
What's allthis wankish talk about screwed up notes etc. Listen to Pet Shop Boys if what you want is TIDYNESS! Magazine has more style, precision and power than virtually anything that came out then and since. Another great post pof 64&1/2
Saw them on this tour and couldnt get the base lines out of my head for a week....dont care if you think they were slightly flawed or tired..this just made them human, well, all except Howard...
Yeah, that's right. This song is a peerless classic. Maybe it's the emotional intensity that some people can't handle, certainly it must have been exhausting to perform.
Sometimes i wonder why this band and that man have hung around in my head for so long..I reckon that its because HD made it possible to view lifes little problems and situations with a bit of calm, grace and a touch dark humour. The songs dont give direction just a new perspective
Magazine was best when they had the awesome Robin Simon on guitar! He had just recently been with Ultravox, and played also on John Foxx's 1st 3 solo lps! And now, Barry Adamson is a Producer!
adamson flawed?no!doyle flawed? no!formula? no! devoto? no! robin simon's playing? yeah a little.every muso has a bum nite. be thankful this clip exists thx sham64 more if u have them!
great to see Magazine circa 1980.i saw them play live at the infamous "Play"gig sept6 1980.They completely blow away the main act(XTC) no disrespect, they did two encores. Barry Adamson's bass was so deep that night i remember hearing it outside festival hall practically shaking the walls as i entered the gig.i reckon Magazine were simply awesome.john doyles perfect drumming.barry's bass.the only downside was the absence of john mcgeoch but robin simon did a great job filling in.
Totally agree, love MCgeoch but Simon was a more than able replacement. Just think,if Mcgeoch had stayed we wouldn't have got all the great Banshees stuff.
Was also at this concert at Festival Hall way back then. I beleve the line-up was The Models (a non starter),The Flowers, Magazine and XTC.
Only went to see XTC but was blown away by Magazine and have been a fan ever since.Have been to many gigs over the years but this one just stays with me.
Thanks for posting the clip, many happy memories evoked.
