Winter? More like a 3600 year ice age. The planet would be a gigantic snowball with absolutely no life (well, ok, maybe some extremophile microbic life -- if it orbits close enough to a brown dwarf to get SOME energy -- but definitely not 20-foot-tall giants like some people claim exist there).
We would be able to spot a brown dwarf MUCH further out than a mere 4 years away. And this goes for independent observatories, not just government observatories that are eager to hide things from us.
