you should explain the math the goes with reverb to like you did compression it's pretty crazy again if you ever get a change to fuck with a S6000 do it i've never heard such intense and beautiful reverb plus the control is fuckin cool
i suggest a little less compression let the drums 'breathe' more. Your reverb and mixing and EQ is good but less compression especially on the snare. If you take off a little compression and further mix the kit, it will sound 10x better. that's the only complaint I have, compression.
I choose to compress a lot so the snare sticks out when recorded in the context of a song - otherwise it just gets lost in the mix. If I was doing some sort of drum solo, I would definitely back off on the compression...but if I backed off of it much in this context, the snare wouldn't really even be able to carry a strong backbeat in a rock song; it would sound more wimpy, like I was playing jazz or something. :)
Thanks! It's actually the PreSonus "Firepod," which (as far as I know) is the same thing as an FP10, just an older version before they changed the name.
And yes, they are the CAD Pro mics you mentioned, I just have a few more than 7. :)
Hey man .. I'm about to start recording proper micd drum videos .. I stumbled across this and you have no idea how much this is gone help me !! Totally subbing you man !! Awesome drummer !! What do you mix with ? I'm gona be using garage band and recording with an alesis 8 channel mixer
I can understand thinking that when it comes to just listening to the drums by themselves, like I am playing them here. However, when you mix them in with other tracks (like guitar and bass), the toms and snare lose all kinds of attack and clarity without compression - it's amazing how different drums sound when sitting in a mix.
hey, just with a question,i will buy the same package of drum mics, the CAD pro 7 package, but u know im with a little tight budget so i was thinking on getting a behringer 1204 mixer but that mixer have 12 channels, 4 preamplified, 4 inputs for XLR cables and 4 of 1/4 just like the one that u have, and 2 other stereo channels with 2 mono each one, can i record the drums with my 7 mics? i have enough inputs to do it?
This is a lifesaver! I have played drums ever since I was about 4 or 5 years old. Most recently my time has been spent writing music on the guitar, piano, or just singing. Recently a buddy of mine and I have been writing music and we wanted to start recording, so I have spent my time and money on a small studio type thing goin on in my basement. My next project is drum mics and this answers all my questions! Very good idea!!
Very well done. I just started recording drums and was pissed that my set sounded like a cardboard box .I'am sure that took a lot of time to make and record but teaching someone something you know makes you a world class human one of the good guys.
I appreciate the kind words...not sure I deserve that kind of accolade though, lol. Funny you would mention the cardboard box thing, because that's exactly how I would describe the sound before EQ.
