Some creationists try to ridicule my support of evolution by saying: "Do you really want to be related to a bunch of apes and monkeys?" I usually reply that '...No, I'd rather not be related to apes. But I sure am proud as hell to be related to Dimetrodon.'
Funny you should mention that. In TLW Platstation 1 game that I have, a holagam of Dimetrodon pops up in the inrto to the T-Rex level and it,s name pops up in the intro to the Raptor level. I played every level of the game, tried to find it but had no luck. Then when I found out the password to the Raptor gallery I found this writen "Tim Goodwin,s Dimetrodon was cut from the final game. It was replaced by Deinonychus."
Dimetrodon is more related to us then it is to dinosaurs. It belonged to the family mammal-like reptiles, the group that evolved into true mammals like us. Dimetrodon died out at the end of the Permian period, which was before the Triassic period.
Interestingly, dimetrodon is longer classified as a reptile or a mammal-like reptile. It's not even considered as related to reptiles. It's on a different branch of the 'family tree'. It's placed in a group called synapsida.
Sauropsids are considered a sister clade of mammals+synapsids. Both have temporal fenestrae behind the eye sockets, but there are plenty of differences. the dentary bone is the component of the jaw in mammals, and the articualr+quadrate have become the ear bones.
The class Reptilia is no longer used by many zoologists/paleozoologists. "Reptiles" is just an umbrella term referring to a polyphyletic group that happened to have similar outer features due to convergent evolution. For instance, though both turtles and alligators are of the class "Reptilia", alligators are phylogenetically closer to modern birds (due to the positioning of post-orbital skull openings).
So they say, there is no true definition for reptiles. Some say that turtles are diapsids that have lost their temporal fenestrae. They're now called "sauropsids" which would also include birds. Mammal are synapsids on the other hand.
No they were right. I have even read many books that says Dimetrodon was a mammal like reptile. One fact book even says "Dimetrodon,s teeth may be seen as a vital clue in the evolution of synapsid reptiles and most people accept that pelycosaurs are ancestors of the mammal-like reptiles.
That,s what I ment. They evolved from reptiles in the Carboniferous. It also has a single jaw bone like a mammal. That being said it was a mammal like reptile.
The did not evolve from reptiles, they evolved from a non-reptile amniote acestor. The jaw of dimetrodon had many bones: articular, dentary, splenial and angular.
moatguy are you kidding me? I've watched that 70000 billion times and I loved it. But it has a lot of mistakes, Petrolacosaurus was a diapsid and couldn't hve evolved into a synapsid.
moatguy I have books that debunk their mistakes, also it's very unlikely that Hynerpeton evolved from Chephalapsis. Type in google Dimetrodon was NOT a reptile.
Anyone can post lying shit on Google. I did not say it was a reptile I said it evolved from a reptile. I even saw Dimetrodon evolve from a reptile on Walking with Monsters.Documentries don,t lie or make mistakes!
For the last time IT DID EVOLVE FROM A REPTILE!!!! Walking with Monsters made no mistakes!!!!!!!!!!! They even have evidence books to prove!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"In the series, Petrolacosaurus is incorrectly identified as an ancestral synaspid, when in fact, it was an early diapsid and could therefore not have been the ancestor of any synapsids (e.g. Edaphosaurus). The most basal synapsid, Archaeothyris, would have been a more suitable candidate."
Never said that when I saw the series. It just said Chephalapiss evolved into Hynerpedon, which evolved into Petrolacosaurus, which evolved into Edaphosaurus and Dimetrodon.
Okay moatguy, it amazes me you refuse to believe MY evidence in this pointless argument. I've already given you more than enough stuff to look at, how about you google it yourself?
Classification is useless! u never know when an animal changes. and reptiles are not a group. they are random terapods with scales. You are right, they are reptiles, depending on how you think of them. The new word is sauropsid.
Coolest reptile ever.

dimetrodon is cool. nice vid. i'd favorite it if my favorites weren't maxed out. 5/5.

Synapsids would pwn MOST dinosaurs...
gckbowers411 3 years ago
all mammals are synapsids as well, including humans.
so yeah, i think a person with a rocket launcher is going to own a dinosaur any day of the week.
sometimes if someone gets on my nerves, i point at them and yell "synapsid!". they tend to just look at me funny.

Dimetrodon was cold blooded like a reptile but had teeth like a mammal. Walking with Monsters even says so.
moatguy 3 years ago
If that,s the case that,s proof it,s a mammal like reptile.
moatguy 3 years ago
Walking With mosters is awesome but is sometimes inaccurate. Dimetrodon was never a reptile.
545lljkr 3 years ago 2
No they were right. I have even read many books that says Dimetrodon was a mammal like reptile. One fact book even says "Dimetrodon,s teeth may be seen as a vital clue in the evolution of synapsid reptiles and most people accept that pelycosaurs are ancestors of the mammal-like reptiles.

"Dimetrodon was a mammal like reptile"
The book must be outdated, Dimetrodon and its counterparts split in th emiddle Carboniferous from the true reptiles.

That's another mistake.
545lljkr 3 years ago
No mistake. 100% true. Even the experts say so.
moatguy 3 years ago
Cephalaspis did not evolve into hynerpeton cause there were already jawed fish at the time!
gckbowers411 3 years ago
You´re right, we most likely evolved from the acanthodii.
545lljkr 3 years ago
Hynerpheton evolved from Caphalaspis. That,s one species. There were other species too.

Walking with Monsters was correct. Even palentolgists worked on it.

It,s acturly called a "missing link" Dimerodon evolved from a real reptile to half-reptile half-mammal and then to real mammal.
moatguy 3 years ago 2
Dimetrodon never evolved from a reptile.
545lljkr 3 years ago
Yes it did. It,s a mammal-like reptile.
moatguy 3 years ago
That's their nickname, both animals evolved independently from an amniote ancestor. Synapsids ahd specialized teeth unlike reptiles.
545lljkr 3 years ago 2
If it Evolved from a reptile, it would be a reptile, and it isn't.
gckbowers411 3 years ago
Well it,s like birds evolved from dinosaurs and birds are not dinosaurs. So Dimetrodon evolved from reptiles.
moatguy 3 years ago 3
actually, all mammals are synapsids as well.
