One thing you forgot to tell people when you made the video is to replace the "crush washer" on the oil drain plug every time you change the oil. It's designed to deform and make a tight seal when the bolt is torqued to the right specs.
@IcePickSnowmanzzzz Which oil is the best is the question that starts fights on message boards and "heated discussions" at most bike meets, in the end it's up to you to make the choice.
@NinjaRider777R thats what makes this country great.no disrespect intended. i guess a better way to say it is what is the most popular brand for a ninja that works the best, in youre opinion
@IcePickSnowmanzzzz My next oil change is going to be Royal Purple Max Cycle 10W40 with a K&N oil filter, as soon as I can get the new crush washer, and a 17mm socket.
I want to see if the RP oil lives up to it's claim of "more horsepower".
If you're just doing your first oil change at the recommended 400 miles, don't worry about which oil it is, just make sure it's 10W40 natural and not synthetic.
Check the ninjette . org forums, there's a full set of DIY guides there of all kinds.
@NinjaRider777R thank you for the advice, i have a question for you do you notice the similarities between the kawasaki er-6n and ninja 650r i dont understand why make two bikes that are so similar to each other but so different
where did you get the oil, oil filter for the bike? does pepboys have everything for ninja or i should go to bike dealer to get the stuff. very helpful video thanks
great vid other than the obvious f ups. I appreciate it. just bought a 2011 Ninja 250r SE. got the first service done at the dealership. but doing the second one myself at a little over 4k miles, whooops!!! =D btw i dont have a rear stand, but still doing it just as well, just a little more complicated(not much =)). btw when you change your oil, maybe dont change it right after you ride... just a thought. thanks for posting, ur the man.
very useful, thanks. quick request... i dont want to pay 300 bucks for the required 500 miles service (they are not going to even adjust the valves so i said f it). Are you able to show me what needs to get done... cable wise. Like what needs to be checked to make sure is tight etc. I know how to do oil changes and i clean my chain every 400 mile .
The smaller O-ring is put around the shaft after you pop it out of the base (you forgot ! ><) and the washer is placed on top, not under with the spring . . . Hope you get it corrected next change. I have seen many people make the same mistake. I could be wrong though only completed one oil change on my ninja. Ride Safe
If you already drained the oil you should really get the pan out of the way. Other than that nice video!

Good tutorial, but I'm a little curious about the oil you used. Supertech (from Wal-Mart) is a car oil. Car oil is a big no-no in motorcycles.

It's a 12mm crush washer.

@IcePickSnowmanzzzz It's mechanically the same bike, with and without fairings, some people like "naked" bikes, some prefer fairings.
Personally if I were going for a 600, it wouldn't be one with a parallel twin, I would want the screaming 4 cylinder.
